    Love this tour. It brings me back to when I visited the ship so many years ago. Got to see her when passing by New York. She and the Queen Elizabeth were beautiful sights to behold. Finally got to go aboard her but not until she docked permanently in Long Beach. Praise God she’s with us today.

    Excellent video! I met Tim on July 8th prior to the Blue Riband Rendezvous event. He is a 'fine jewel in the Queen's crown' of fabulous tour guides that are currently working on board. Glad you were able to have him as your guide!

      Wow. That means so much. HonoUred to have a subscriber from Cornwall!! Never been, but love that place. Subbed back! Perhaps I'll take The Mary to Cornwall, if I could figure out the engineering needed to get her motors running again. It may take a few tries. But I'll get there eventually.

    Had the opportunity to attend this fantastic tour along with Matthew when this was filmed. The tour was interesting, informative and a lot of fun; we were lucky to have Tim showing us around, such a nice guy and so knowledgable too. The Steam and Steel tour is a must if you visit the QM, I highly recommend, and thanks so much Matthew for posting this for all those who can't take the tour in person. Looking forward to more great videos in the future, as always!

    @Matthew S. Richards -- LOL Okay, so I want to know... the tour is supposed to be 1 hour long... how long was Tim's tour on this adventure?!? 🙂Just like my days as a tour guide, Tim's tour's MUST go over their 1 hour timeframe! 30 minutes into the tour (and thats edited footage) and he is just NOW taking his group into the Engine Room! 😆 I can totally see why though... he had some REALLY GOOD guests asking some REALLY GOOD questions!

      I neglected to film the portion on the walkway heading to the aft engine room entrance. So with that and everything else considered, it was probably close to 1h30!!

    I remember back in the 80s when the town was open and the spruce goose was there. I remember back then a friend told me that the queen mary was hiring security and paid good but the only thing is it was for graveyard shift and people don't last long. My friend said the first few nights someone walks with you at night to show you around after that your patrol the ship on your own in the dark with a flashlight. He said the ship was haunted and that's why people quit. I went to the queen mary to apply for the security job and I asked a security guard if the ship was haunted he kinda laughed and told me they weren't allowed to talk about it. This was back in the 1980s and they probably thought it would be bad publicity about the ghost on the ship.

      I’ve definitely had experiences aboard that maybe I’ll do a video on, hopefully for October coming up. One time, back between 2004-2007, Dad and I were with a tour guide close to closing deep in the forward engine rooms and that’s when I discovered a lot of tour guides, at least then, closed down on their own. Being in a huge, empty, dark space like that ALONE would probably get to me after a while, too. It’s the makings of a Murder, She Wrote episode…without all the, “I’ll KILL YOU!” revenge tropes. I’ve heard great things about operations aboard before Disney. Did you get the security job?

      @@ManWhoLovesTheMary I got a security job in Burbank watching some warehouses at night. That's where I saw a ghost running down the alley between these warehouse buildings. The other guard that worked my days off said he saw the shadow figure running down the alley and it wasn't touching the ground and it disappeared when he ran after it. He said he would shoot it next time. These warehouses are near the Burbank airport.

      @@ManWhoLovesTheMary YT vlogger Alex the Historian's recent vid on the QM shows his assistant on the ship (the vlogger was in Oregon on the phone directing him) detecting a paranormal moment near the ship's former synagogue. So-called ghosts & poltergeist activity are a real thing, a given. Modern science just doesn't know how to explain them.
      Good to see that the ship's engine areas look nice & presentable. I had the impression they'd be dusty, rusty messes similar to the SS United States ship in Philly. I get why Tim the guide described that ship's original interiors as ugly. A conservancy group wants to restore it, which doesn't seem worth it. Tim implied most of the QM's machinery had been removed due to contractual obligations with Cunard. But I thought it was to make room for museum exhibits supervised by Jacques Cousteau. Regardless, some folks have said if all the equipment had remained, the ship's lowest level would be more fulfilling.

  • @michaelwood3305
    @michaelwood3305 5 месяцев назад

    Great tour. I don't think its correct to say the forward engine room and boiler rooms were removed because Cunard did not want the ship to sail again. Whilst the sales contract stipulated the ship would not sail again, the machinery spaces were removed as they intended the space to be re-used - primarily being the Museum of the Sea - which never fully eventuated. They could have left the remaining machinery in place if they had chosen to do so.

    • @ManWhoLovesTheMary
      @ManWhoLovesTheMary  21 день назад

      I have heard that they didn’t have to take out as MUCH engine room space as they did. And that the rest they did gut out was indeed fully intended for the Museum of the Sea. And it sounds like it was a lot of excess engine room space they gutted. You’re way ahead of me on the original contract between Cunard and Long Beach. I hope to read through that one day very soon. So many goals to achieve.

      I most certainly am. I have many movies, TV shows, books already in mind and planned. And am also taking requests, of course. Ship of Fools is coming...after all the extensive research and planning. So if you have anything you'd like to see covered, I'll make sure to put it at the top section of the list.

      @@ericfasold805 I should most certainly think so. I grew up with that movie and would at times watch and rewind just the opening credits for those precious hybrid QE2/QM shots. And talk about an excuse to review one of my childhood favorites. The fact they acknowledge and celebrate QE2 and incorporate her into the film just make it that much sweeter of a picture.
