Xanders speech to dawn always gets me teary eyed too. Such great writing.
Yeah, sometimes Xander can be the one who lifts the others up, but I wish it happened more.
Xander Harris is Heart Of The Scooby Gang. He's The One Who See Everything Beyond The Supernatural.
You're not alone. Those, in my opinion, were Xander's best lines in the entire series. Always makes me tear up.
This is Dawn getting her own Zeppo episode which is why that final moment with Xander is so perfect.
" I love this show " 🥹 Yes we do! 😂
It's crazy to me that even 10 from the end you still felt daft getting emotional - we've all been there :).
(and yeah, Xander's _far_ from perfect, his flaws are many and varied BUT he's also _crazy_ brave, can be incredibly thoughtful and will have your back when it counts - what he does for Dawn here... basically, if you have someone in your life that'll do that for you, try and hang on to them :)
I just love that ending scene so much, you’re not alone in that
I love that she could sense that Xander speech coming ❤
Xander speech!
Xander's long been the heart, and he's given some great inspiring speeches, but even beyond the yellow crayon, even beyond the "What would Buffy do" I think the "You're not special, you're extraordinary" is his best.
Back when this episode first aired I was in my mid-twenties, I never got emotional or teary eyed over TV shows or movies. Even when Joyce or Tara died in the previous seasons, it did not really affect me on such a level. It wasn't until I was in my thirties, before that started to happen much more frequently.
But the scene when Xander talks to Dawn was the exception. It was the very first time in my life I had tears running down my cheek just from watching a fictional story on TV.
This is why Amanda is my favorite potential. We get an episode that gives us an intro to her and she appears in an earlier episode. She's a character. Not just a body on the screen
For a character as flawed as Xander, he sure knows exactly what to say at exactly the right time. To Buffy S4 in the Bronze when she felt like she was losing herself, to Buffy (and then Anya) S5 when he tried to get Buff to realise that Riley deserved more love (and then declaring his love to Anya) and now this. He is the heart of the Scoobies. He may not be powerful but he has an inner strength that none of them can compete with.
Dakara,
Crying is your gift.
~ The 1st Slayer
Claiming the higher ground is a common strategy. Make the other guy work. The debate between the group was interesting. Willow being the bad guy, and Xander and Anya being the voice of reason. The spell actually went though Dawn and into Amanda. Gotta love Klem. Xanders speech at the end was great. BTW, it's great that you feel the need to deliver, but you should not do it at the expense of your health. Take time to take care of yourself, we'll understand. Seasons changing, you'll need to bundle up more as the days roll on.
i agree on all but im not too sure about the debate part. imo willow's dialogue stands out as almost if not entirely out of character. in the entirety of the series (except most of season 6 with the whole magic addiction and the dark willow arc), willow has pretty much always been a sweet, empathetic support, tending to be understanding and such, which we mainly see towards buffy (from season 1 to 4, but also in season 7. season 5 is somewhat of an exception as tara kinda replaces her for this "emotional support role" for buffy), but you get the idea
Willow also has a strong bond with dawn, which we can witness at first in season 5: their relationship is almost that of a mother with her daughter (which becomes even more obvious in the comics [season 8+] but i digress). so yeah...how does it make sense that willow who, throughout the series, has showed such empathy and understanding towards dawn's sister, has a very close bond with dawn herself since dawn's arrival, yet here gets beyond mean, saying that dawn's input is worthless just because of the state of mind she was in (which doesn't make much sense in and of itself) while claiming that dawn hides like a coward who can't stand any obstacle thrown her way (which is wrong, as dawn proved numerous times that she can be strong and brave when needed [for instance in season 6 when fighting the underground demons with buffy during the dark willow arc])?
The end of this episode is the best Xander moment of the show. Always get teared up.
Cordelia called Xander the Zeppo. He's really the Ringo.
This episode works as a direct sequel to the zeppo. If you think about Xanders character progression on that episode, his insecurities through season 4 and the way he finally just let it be and started to actually watch over the group from season 5 on, helping Buffy with Riley and all. Xanders character is really well done. All he talks here about no one watching him is kinda of the point of the zeppo and his whole arc as the regular human of the group. Most fantasy shows go out of their way to give powers to everyone and dont understand the appeal of having regular characters too
When you go back to season 1 and look at Xander back then, and Xander in season 7, he is a completely different character. The change happened in season 5. He grew up after he was split in two and saw what he could achieve with confidence.
Xander's statement to Dawn is a perfect reflection of his growth as a character.
He started out as a rather quirky and insecure nerd who was the easiest to write off because he acted like a goofball, and his reluctance to grow up was always reflected in his outer appearance. But his transformation in season 2's "Halloween," showed his potential, and that military knowledge and experience came in clutch for years to come.
He had always been the comic relief, but season 6 reflected his more serious side, and he finally looked the part of the guy who can save the world through his honest emotional expression.
I think Dawn was upset in the beginning because before the potentials came, Buffy was training her and spending time with her, but after they came that stopped. Buffy's time went to them instead, the training to them. Dawn didn't even get to be trained anymore, which was stupid because she still needed to know how to fight. And a part of me will always wonder what if Dawn was also a potential, because that ball of light did not leave the room until Dawn went to the door. It stayed by Dawn. So maybe the light followed Dawn to the door and was going through both her and Amanda at the same time and that was why it was all weird. And no one ever realized and the monks didn't even know. Because she was made out of Buffy it would have made sense. But that's not how it played out. It would have been a great plot twist.
When Xander gives his speeches he is always so on point. He did so much good for Dawn's poor little heart.
Yeah, I think it's stupid to not have Dawn train with the potentials. She's the slayer's sister. She absolutely needs to be able to at least defend herself. Also, I read somewhere awhile ago (cant remember where) that apparently Dawn WOULD have been a potential since she's made from Buffy, but the energy from the key kinda overpowered it and burned all that away. It was basically a one or the other thing, and she was the key.
What I wish they had time to explore (and they do in the comics) is Dawn coming into her powers as the key. She's able to open portals at will, and not the world ending kind. It would have been pretty dope to see, but a little shoe-horned in for a final season.
A Season of obvious and also subtle call backs to its past. An episode that recalls the great Zeppo Effect show in Season 3. Xander has always been entertaining, boorish, insightful, clueless, but always necessary. He has given CPR to save Buffy, stopped a deadly bombing in The Zeppo, and supplied his heart to defeat Adam…. He may not have a supernatural power but is citizen soldier. An average guy that can be extraordinary in battle or get knocked out early in the fracas. That’s Xander and what he did for Dawn is typical. He is there when needed, does something special, and like many people’s actions, they go unnoticed by many but unforgettable to the one that needs it most.
"Xander is gonna say something real sweet and I'm gonna wanna cry."
Yes, Dakara, you will. And you did, and so did I. And little Dawnie's expression, that's what they call "glowing with pride". It's the expression you have when your parents have told you, in the most heartfelt way they could, how proud they are of you, and the expression you hope to inspire your kids to wear one day, when you've done the same.
And despite his inner child being so openly displayed, in many ways Xander is the most mature character on the show. Besides Giles, I suppose, but he's a proper adult.
When dealing with the First, they should frequently share the secret handshake. Or any handshake, actually.

The OG Renegade Rebel helping train with Buffy always loved that, "Touch them and lose your Private's" - Spike Epic line🤘 Great reaction as always Dakara stay awesome 😂 And stop having such a dirty mind haha 🎃
The line runs through Faith now. Buffy dying again wouldn't make any of them the new slayer.
Which is evidenced by the fact that no new slayer was called when Buffy died. Again.
Also I can relate. I didn’t want it to end in 2003 when I watched it wrap up originally. Over 20 years later, I still want more Buffy
Xander has for a long time struggled with being the regular human in the group, feeling useless and left out. He saw himself in Dawn and I think that talk helped him get over it too. Dawn found her calling his episode, she's good at researching and I'd say that she has the potential to become a watcher. She did mentor Amanda, and with zero super strength her bravery gave Amanda the courage to dust her first vampire. She should be proud of herself. Dawn realized she didn't wanna be a slayer once she thought she was a potential. She knew Buffy would be livid at the thought of her little sister being a potential, I agree Buffy wants better for Dawn.
Out of the core cast, Xander is by far the one I like the least, but I admit this is one of his best moments
Xander is The Zeppo!!!
An interesting episode with Buffy and Spike giving The Potentials practical training, and eventually locking them in the crypt with a real live Vampire. We see as well Dawn, and the other Scoobies thinking that she is another potential. Of course we are led to believe this, but it in fact Amanda who has the power, and starts to use it. Dawn feels sidelined now, and a brilliant ending scene with Xander and Dawn when he reassures her how important she is to the group. It's really from here that the arc of the show builds towards the Finale.
I kind of wish they had left him with his soldier skills.
Part of me really wanted Dawn to be a potential. Her character was so lost in season 6, and making her a potential honest makes a lot of sense. However, I also see the beauty in her simply being an 'ordinary' girl now, yet she's still strong and brave and resourceful. I get what they're going for there, but yeeeeeah I still wanted her to be a potential lol
"She's such a sausage." frigging got me. Almost made me spit out my beer. Which is a no-no. Lol
We've had over 120 glorious episodes up until now but some of the best character moments are still yet to come.
It's going to be one hell of a ride.
Fantastic episode.
I was very glad to see this posted. It got me away from politics for a bit. This is an important episode, though that may only become apparent as the season/series finalizes. No spoilers, and I will look forward to your next reaction to BtVS.
Amanda gets bullied a lot apparently. Including from the marching band. 😜🎸🎺🥁
I've rewatched the full run of Buffy loads of times over the past twenty years or so, so I've seen this ep plenty, but watching this reaction just now, I think that's the first time that Xander/Dawn scene's ever made me cry. That's what middle-age does to a guy, I suppose. 😅
Xander is ❤ of The Scooby Gang. He's The One Who See Everything Beyond The Supernatural. Without Xander, there's no The Scooby Gang. He saves the world twice on his own. Things better if Xander is here. Without him, things never being same from the beginning.
You should watch Dollhouse! It's just a couple seasons and it's so so so good!
Worst, most insulting show ever made!
@@Nicolas.Vincent that's a strong opinion 🤔

Why was this the most beautiful reaction? I've watched a lot of Buffy reactors, probably 8 to 10 have finished this season, but your response to Xander and Dawn at the end was above and beyond. Made me emotional ❤
Why do they keep acting as if when Buffy dies, the next slayer will be activated, when at this point they know that isn't true.
🤷♂️
I just think that they don’t realize that. By the time Buffy died the second time, they likely wouldn’t have known if another slayer was activated out there. It’s a still historically fresh loophole that they probably didn’t know how it actually worked.
@@CURohrer Even after Kendra's death and calling of Faith? 🤔 I think it's to make the show seem more immediate, but it makes no sense.
@@Nicolas.Vincent I’m just saying how I had to interpret it to make sense for me.
They didn’t advertise Buffy’s demise after The Gift (which is why they were using the Buffybot) and it’s not like they had the best relationship with The Watcher’s Council. So for all they knew there could have been a new slayer (who didn’t have a Watcher already) out there after she died the second time. I’m just saying, the characters could plausibly not understand that the line only runs through Faith.
@@CURohrer Go on with your headcannon 😄 Mine is they're in denial about Faith being the current chosen one 😅 cause she takes no responsibility and she evil...so far.
Season of speeches I tell ya! 😊
Xander has also revived Buffy on one occassion, and helped resurrect her on another.
It was also the realization by Dawn that Buffy would have to die in order for her to be called. Although that part is murky since Faith is still alive
The one thing that always bothered me is: Buffy is not the slayer in charge.
It's Faith.
When Buffy died in s1 , Kendra was called and when she died, Faith arrived.
When Buffy re-died at the end of s5 , rightfuly, no new slayer was activated because Faith is alive.
In this season they kept saying if Buffy dies any potential could be the next slayer.
Aaaarggh.
Continuity , pleease !!!!
Just because it’s being said does not mean they are correct. Giles had to bring the Potentials to Buffy. Prisons aren’t homes for girls needing a place to stay. How would you tell girls that they have a destiny and by the way she’s in jail?
Do they realize it, though? I don't remember it being acknowledged on the show - only by Joss Whedon later on.
We know that for sure, because it's been verified by the writers. But the characters don't know. They may have theories but they don't know anything for sure. There's never been more than one slayer before that. It was a fluke that they didn't expect and don't know how it works. That has nothing to do with continuity.
The problem I had with Wesley was his use of the phrase "I could care less". Zero real English people have ever said that.
And you know all English people in the world, do you? Cmon now 😂
How uoset can you be when there are comics. I had to wait many many many years for there emto even be a comic continuation you get it right away
I know, she can start reading them the minute she's done with Season 7 😂
Without Xander, Buffy would've died for good at the end of season 1 when the Master drowned her. Angel and Xander came and found her and gave her CPR. Xander's breath brought her back.
Thank you! I’ve seen so many of these Buffy reactions and Xander gets so much hate - from reactors and commenters. Yes, he has flaws. So do most interesting characters.
Xander has a good speech to Dawn here, but as to Dawn's words to him... I wouldn't exactly consider him the group member who sees things. I see that as Dawn's crush on him seeping through.
Have you seen Charmed from 1998? If not, think it would be an enjoyable show to fill that Buffy hole when you get to that point. Also, just FYI, Buffy's story continues in comic book form after the show comes to an end, the first in the series being made into Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 Motion Comics. There is also a comic book series that starts prior to the show and then runs along side of the show through at least the high school years. There was going to be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Animated Series, It would have had all the original actors voicing their own characters, except for Sarah Michelle doing Buffy who would have been voiced by Giselle Loren, but sadly never ended up getting aired, but some clips of it can be found here and there.
She has watched Charmed. I guess you have ever noticed her wearing the triquetra pendant
What happened to the actors from that show is tragic & depressing
😐
😑
@@ninipookie I have came across that symbol a million times on a whole bunch of different merchandise well before Charmed was a thing let alone the times I came across it before I knew Charmed was a thing, so just because someone has something with that symbol on it, it doesn't mean that they have automatically seen the show. But yes I have noticed, which is one of multiple reasons I suggested it. Besides that, Supernatural is the only other show good enough to fill a Buffy hole, and I know for sure she has seen that one.
Charmed is a special show for me, I watched when it aired back in the day. Still to this day I haven't seen the last season-I should get on that! Perhaps a rewatch from the start is in order?...
Yeah, Buffy dying again isn’t LIKELY to call another slayer. We don’t really know that the spell to bring her back wouldn’t “fix” The line back to her. I do think however the only person who knows that’s not true for a fact is Buffy, she just said that to scare the potentials.
It always bugs me a bit that they say "Buffy has to die" for another slayer to be called. Since her death in S1, the Slayer line passed on to Kendra and now lives with Faith. Her death in S5 did not cause another slayer to be called.
Well to be honestly we don't know if her resurrection in S6 changed that or not, in S1 she was simply resuscitated but in S6 she was brought back as in almost being reborn (and Willow used the specific words "Osiris, here lies the warrior of the people: Let her cross over." so it is possible that this spell remade Buffy as the actual Slayer.
Keep that scene in mind, because it's foreshadowing Xanders future in many ways...
She knows, she's already finished this and Angel on Patreon.
3:07 great (unintentional?) pun!
It bothers me every time buffy says my death may make you the next slayer. NO you wont be faith needs to die. Buffy died a second time and there is no new slayer still just her and faith.
we don't know, Willows resurrection spell in S6 could have changed that for all we know.
They don’t know the rules.
You need to react to Battlestar Galactica. After you finish Firefly.
This episode always confused me. Dawn has Buffy's blood of course it's her, right? That being said, didn't the slayer lineage pass on to Faith. This episode retcons everything...

Hey after you finish the season, go and do a reaction to the Buffy animated comic season 8.
So, now that you've seen Xander being all sweet to Dawn, how do you feel about them becoming a couple in the comics? :p
Sickening. Seeing that Xander is Joss Whedon’s self insert, and he tried to S.A Michelle as a minor. And since he writes the comics, it’s like a perverse and sick fantasy he has, where he makes his fixation with sleeping with Michelle “canon.”
Yeah, that's pretty much my point. He wasn't allowed to be alone with Michelle, at some point; they didn't say why, but I figured as much.
@@arc7375 He tried to assault Michelle? And what orifice are you pulling that blatant lie out of? Rhetorical question, I don't care about anything people like you have to say.
