  • This is the climactic chase sequence from the 1947 B-Western "Robin Hood of Texas," Gene Autry's final movie for Republic. The action takes place almost entirely on the Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, Calif., with a few shots using stock background footage from other sites.
If you would like to see how the sequence breaks down, with a bunch of still shots explaining where it's all shot, check out my blog entry focused on this clip, part of my blog about the Iverson Movie Ranch. The post can be found here:

If you look closely while watching the clip, you should be able to tell the difference between the real footage shot at Iverson and the stock footage shot wherever. (Much of it looks to me like Burro Flats, just a few miles southwest of Iverson.) The actual on-site footage from Iverson has sharper backgrounds. One example of the fake backgrounds begins around 1:47.
Starting at 3:25 we get a nice look at Ambush Rock, which today is located in the back yard of a home in Indian Falls Estates, the gated community that sits on the site of the former Upper Iverson.
The actual leap off the rock, onto a speeding wagon, is done by a stuntman, as is pretty obvious from how the sequence is edited. But much of the impressive riding and fighting throughout the chase is pure Gene, at his cowboy hero finest.

Autry sat too stiff in the saddle....looked like he was not giving Champion enough head. Roy rode close in, like a jockey, and would pat Trigger;s neck to go faster... Trigger would run flat out about 40 miles an hour.
