I was looking everywhere for an English one. Always coming in clutch!
If only he had turned down the order, and been able to explain why the order was no good. How many tens of thousands of lives would have been saved.
Wouldn't have done any good. Japan's government was dead set in it's path and Yamamoto had already avoided numerous attempts at this point from the army for his anti-war opinions +(Manchuria Campaign, Tripartite Pact. Yamamoto HEAVILY opposed both in addition to being against the idea of messing with America)+. It was either retire or follow orders. So, he did what he had to, and took the third option: Go along with the government while secretly trying to fulfill his own agenda which was: one crushing victory against the Americans where their aircraft carriers are wiped off the board, sue for peace, war ends. Every move he made was for the sake of that plan, but due to bad luck and other admirals disregarding his orders due to factional differences that plan never materialized.
+Essentially, if the stars had managed to align and everything had gone according to Yamamoto's plan, the Pacific Theater would potentially have opened and closed on December 7th, 1941.+
First, but great video like aways
