  • Anstruther and Cellardyke, Fife, Scotland, A Drive Through.
Anstruther and Cellardyke are two small historic coastal towns in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland.
Anstruther or 'Ainster' as it is known locally, is located on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, about 9 miles south-southeast of St Andrews. It is a charming fishing village popular with day-trippers and holidaymakers, known for its quality fish suppers from the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar.
The town offers various attractions including the Scottish Fisheries Museum and boat trips to the Isle of May.
Anstruther is part of the East Neuk area and serves as a base for exploring nearby towns like St Andrews. The town also offers accommodation options ranging from luxury self-catering cottages to boutique hotels, making it a convenient hub for visitors exploring the Fife coast.
The town's history is intertwined with herring fishing and this is commemorated at the Scottish Fisheries Museum, located at the east end of the harbour.
Anstruther was once a hub where more fish were caught, processed, and traded than at any other Scottish harbour. However, by the latter part of the 20th century, changes in the fishing industry led to a decline in Anstruther's importance as a fishing port.
The Scottish Fisheries Museum Trust was established in 1967 to preserve the fishing heritage of Scotland, with Anstruther chosen as the location due to its historical significance in the industry.
The museum showcases historic boats, a restored wheelhouse, a fishmonger's shop, and a collection of photographs related to the fishing industry.
Additionally, Anstruther boasts vessels of national significance like Reaper, a restored Fifie Sailing Herring Drifter, which remains operational and serves as a floating museum of the herring industry. The museum aims to educate visitors about the evolution of the Scottish commercial fishing industry and its vital role in Scottish life.
Cellardyke is a simply charming, picture postcard style, Village in that stands adjacent to Anstruther in the East Neuk. It has a rich history dating back to the 16th century when its harbour was first built.
The village's name is believed to have originated from "Sillerdykes," referring to the sun reflecting off fish scales on drying fishing nets. It was once a thriving fishing town with over 200 boats in the 19th century.
Over time, the village transitioned from a bustling fishing port to a quieter hamlet, it is now home to just a few small creel and pleasure boats. Despite the decline in its fishing industry, Cellardyke's charm remains intact with a well-preserved old fishing port and attractive streets like George Street and John Street that are lined with quaint cottages and houses.
Visitors to Cellardyke can enjoy its idyllic harbour, coastal views, and charming atmosphere. The village offers opportunities for coastal walks, enjoying the seaside vibe, and exploring local cafes.
