Tom Weir was a writer, broadcaster and an environmentalist. Tom wrote and presented this classic Scottish TV series Weir's Way which ran from 1976 to 1987
I remember watching this in 1979 when I was a bairn lived in Anster and used to pick the shells of that house with gran’s pearl handled butterknives oh I was naughty but we all did it whoopsy And every day going to the pier when grounded and going on the North Carr Lightship, didn’t appreciate the sad history of the North Carr though then whatwith the Broughtyferry Lifeboat tragedy and then stowed away on the Mona Lisa.every day telling the tourists all about Isle of May etc. I thought papa never knew I was there but he did lol n just let me be tour guide for a knickerbocker glory in the cafe n 50p wages lol oh happy memories and thanks for bringing them back by sharing this .
Ho ho, great stories. I remember the North Carr Lightship haunted the harbour for years as well as a big rusty hull moored just behind it. Both were a bit scary and threatening for wee laud, somehow.
@@drewsimpson5967 Oh Drew papa used to take me on the North Carr all the time and I was fine with it loved it aye I knew the history but being young didn't quite understand significance I'd be about 5 - 10. No techyness in those days so nowt other than handmade interior or the models of the crew all manually individually handcrafted museum style workmanship throughout the whole stuffs from the boats internal fixtures to the men themselves every detail handmade and on the mannequins of the crew all individually crafted quite a feet for those days and so damn life like we'll if you were a bairn anyway for young aye it kinda did something you know. I'd been on it umpteen times ken't inside oot papa babysitting me what caused me to do the least havoc and got him a pint without gran knowing lol cos he was supposed to be walking me keep out the house on cleaning day lol what to do what to do with her so pier and pub Ship"s Inn or Smuggler's Inn or cafe after jaunt round the harbour and on the North Carr again or down to the Lido swingpark and trampolines my fav meant pier so him babysitting me again reluctantly hehe what to do with her ok pier again on boat again so like tourists lol but didny matter how many times you went on it you still saw something new each time you hadn't noticed previously so this one day all over it again everything fine until the Captain's cab 😳. The men on R&Rs in their cabs lying on bunks reading or in the mess playing cards drinking eating or the ones working on shift etc all fab detailed and real looking and ken the story aye a bit creepy. So, got to the Captain's cabin and I'm no sure but just something spooked me that day papa holding my hand so I cudny escape and cos trouble I looked at the Capt old uniform style and weathered face or maybe just the paint peeling lol but was like he moved or whatever. Mind, these were permanently fixed statues you know but I imagined the life like Capt moved at me and freaked the bludy bejeez oota me and I dropped Papa's hand and fled lol never forget it I flew like a spooked nutjob knocked into walls and the folks visiting and mind how it was 2 gangways IN and OUT am battering into everything and everyone I runs out the IN one nearly knocking someone flying off into the water and papa scurrying after me (he walked with a bad limp since accident) shouting Lainey Lainey where f is she (swore like a sailor lol) Well, that was the last time I went on the North Carr! Don't know if he was too embarrassed or if I was banned lol. So, just shows you Drew watching Tom on his treks brings back the memories of your own memories and that's why showing this stuff not only Tom lives on but your memories and my papa etc etc and reminds you how much poor papa suffered and how much of an imp I really was lol
