- Pioneer has been king of the DJ battle mixer for several years now. Is it still the best DJ Battle mixer out there? Today we talk about it and compare it to the many new mixers on the DJ landscape, the Rane 72, Rane 70, and Reloop Elite
Love my S9 but gotta agree there was a big number of users with faulty XLR outputs. I waited a year to purchase mine and it still had a faulty XLR output when I first bought it. I found this out by using 1 xlr cable and testing each output separately. I found that my left xlr signal was drastically lower than the right and the right was almost distorted but you wouldn’t tell when both XLR’s were connected because the signal appeared to be perfectly level. It was really odd however I was just a lil over my 30 day return policy so I contacted Agiprodj and showed them a video clip demonstrating the defect. Long story short they contacted Pioneer and Pioneer emailed me a return label and once I shipped it back agiprodj sent out a brand new S9 mixer which has been rock solid ever since. Pioneer will not admit it but they have really bad quality control.
When I joined the S9 group on Facebook I found tons of users with the exact same issues. It just goes to show all companies have issues including Rane.
Got my S9 2weeks ago (yes iam late to the party i know) gues what. First one had a dead xlr master out (right side). but my shop decided to switch it instantly to a new one. tested it onside, and it works. now i have a new S9 at home that works and its awesome. next problem i got is that my serato dj didnt find my S9. alwayse the message "problem connecting Audio hardware). i use a new macbook pro with OS Catalina. maybe someone has a idea or a tutorial to fix this issue?
AemJaY under system prefs/security and privacy/privacy/accessibility make sure you allow serato dj pro to control your computer. You may need to uninstall and reinstall the driver.

AemJaY Just more proof some S9’s from the factory are indeed faulty but glad you got a working S9 now. As for it not connecting try googling Pioneer/Catalina there may be certain steps to allow the S9 access with Catalina.
Pioneer if you’re listening to Cleveland add 1) Pan 2) Split Cue 3) Independent Pad Modes and please retain the Mic EQ functionality (bonus add a secondary mic input)
My wishlist are all those things in addition to a USB hub, Dedicated Instant Doubles/Silent Cue Buttons and I’ll be happy lol

Good timing with this one Terry. I've always wanted an S9 and played on it maybe a handful of times (with vinyl mostly). This year I was considering getting one, but that Rane 70 definitely got my attention. And after your breakdown of the S9's weaknesses, I really may have to rethink getting one now. 🤔(maybe a used one could be an option down the road, but still it's questionable at this point.)

That Rane 70 is really tempting. In my opinion, it is a combo of the S9 and the 72. It looks amazing I can't wait to get my hands on it.

This is a great video. This video makes me realize how the mixers have evolved over time. Just 10 years ago, we were comparing scratchlive boxes. Then came the Rane 57 which actually changed the game. That mixer at one point was epitome of convenience for a dj. Now we're in 2020 talking about a mixer with the "bells and whistles" that the previous all-in-one mixers didn't have. I really think Pioneer and everyone else knows what they're doing. There will never be a perfect mixer. Let's be honest. A perfect mixer equates to no more money for rane, pioneer, and others.

Another great video Cleveland. I've had the s9 for a few years now so I'm going to hang on to it and see what Pioneer does in response to the Rane 70. Thanks for the heads up about the RCA and XLR ports. I didn't know about sound quality issue either. The s9 was my first mixer in over 20 years so I had nothing to compare it to lol. I have the S9 and brought it about 2 years ago. No matter when you buy something, eventually something better will come out after. You'll go broke chasing that 1st High. If I get anything, I'll go down to a controller.
Timothy Cook yes and no. The independent pads have been on their controllers since the original sx. They for whatever reason couldn’t or wouldn’t put them on.
I've had it for 2 years, I love it, probably won't upgrade till pioneer comes out with another one, definitely has held it's value as well which is kinda cool. The Rane is dope but just seems like a S9 2.0 not worth the hassle to me to upgrade, but definitely if you're buying a new mixer go with the rane

My Rane 62 Still The mainest.
I keep my stuff for a long time. Before the s9 it was a rane ttm56 with sp1 so yeah I stick it out for a while. I don’t see a need to replace my s9 so till I do , I’ll watch videos of the newer stuff.
I've been saying it for awhile now and I dont know why reloop doesnt get the recognition it should but I have a reloop elite and I've had a s9 and the reloop elite imo is the best mixer out right now hands down. The only mixer I seeing being better is when the rane 70 comes out, but I'm speaking from a turntablist point of view also.

thanks, Ive been waiting on the 70 for reviews. but as a bedroom skratch dj I dont want to spend 2500 cnd. the 72 was never an option. the s9 I was/am considering as its cheaper now but it seems like the elite is a better built/thought out mixer. In your opinion what makes the elite better then the s9 .

@@fedscame That isn't true. The Reloop Elite does come with hardware efx. I know because I have one. You can also use serato efx with regular vinyl.

you commented in a video reviewing the Reloop that it felt like they didn't build it with real vinyl in mind, this was the reason I decided to buy an S9 instead of an Elite

William Tharpe I am doing the exact same thing. I’ve had the NS7III and now going back to turntables. The Rane 70 will be the route it seems for myself also.

I agree with you - Pioneer has no choice - it has to replace the dated S9 this year. I don't trust inMusic who now owns Rane. So I'll wait for the S10 which I'm sure will be overpriced - but yet well worth it.

i've always thought pioneer mixers were much louder than rane mixers
@@The313DETROITMAN they seem louder because the emphasis is on the midrange, also why they tend to sound harsh. rane is fatter in the lows and flatter on the mids and highs, because when on a loud sound soundsystem the last thing you need is more midrange. of course thats my opinion but i do have a lot of experience with both pioneer and rane mixers EXCEPT the djm 900nexus 2(i have heard good things but only played on it once).
I was able to get a S9 for $650 at a pawn shop! I know I should be greatful, but then the 70 came out and I'm waiting to see how that goes. I love the sound of my 62 and I see the Rane 70 as a mix of both the 62 and S9. I haven't heard of anything of the S10.....

Love the S9. Been on it for a while. Looking to get 2nd flagship mixer to go with a new traveling setup. The 70 is tempting but you just helped me with having patience. Thanks. I'll wait to see what pioneer do. Thanks again!👍
1000% agree with you on the pans! Rane got rid of these on a lot of their mixers and it drives me crazy sometimes. Like you said, they're really good for checking your output in certain situations, but also good for recording isolating sounds from wax, putting your sounds where you want them in the stereo field, etc. I know you can do some of this in post-production but its nice to have the option to pan directly from the mixer. Also, glad you mentioned the echo loops. DJ JayOne is another one who's a beast using those.
Another trend I don't like is that companies are getting rid real effects loops (for use with outboard effects.) The one on the Rane TTM-56 was almost perfect. It was stereo, had a wet/dry fader, used 1/4" jacks. Really versatile. I like internal effects okay for ease of travel, but not if it means I can't use outboard gear.
Thanks for your honest feedback. I have two 62’s. I bought the S9 twice and returned them because the mic echo is trash. The mic effects on the 62 is awesome. I didn’t buy the 72 because it has too much going on. I am leaning towards getting the 70.

Thank you for making this video because this is of high interest to me! I love my S9. I bought it exactly 2 years ago for $1700 on a zero interest payment plan and am very happy with it. It made me switch to Serato from Traktor! I still think the fx on traktor are far superior, and I feel like they really limit you on custom midi mapping, but over all, it's a great mixer for my style. I am looking forward to the successor, but I'll probably stick to the S9 unless I can get a decent price for it.
I just sold my Rane gear. I’m rocking with my SRT 1000 and will be waiting on the new s9. I asked the dudes at namm and he said the same. Once you start seeing those price drop, something new should be dropping. #S2020

tebrown3 12’s and 72. Too much equipment for the events I was doing. Clients don’t appreciate good gear they just want good music so I decided to downgrade on my gear. I enjoy my new srt. Easy setup and break down is quick.

So watching this while I currently own a DJM S3! I'm just lucky Pioneer gave me a crossfader it's that bare, Ive got more controls on my toaster than the DJM S9s younger brother! My beatpads are me finger drumming the box it came in 😂
Phantom power will destroy your Pioneer boards, look into that. Anytime I plug into any source that is not mine, I make mention, very politely (Usually not very polite about it.) to the sound person to make sure the phantom power is off, before I plug up, the repair job is somewhere around $300.00.
Spot on about the low output!! I thought I was imagining things. I would guess the S9 has lower output voltage than what you get from Denon products.

I just bought a numark scratch for £200 & a sp1 for £70 & the guy changed the pad lights on both units to match serato colours, i also picked up a xp1 for £130 which i will use either on my cdjs or turntables
ANYBODY get distortion from using the S9? I get distortion almost everytime I use it. Either from quick fader movements or possibly dirty needles. I keep the needles clean and it happens eventully. Let me know if you have a remedy. Thank you.
Numark Scratch is a steal at 499.00
I love the Rane 72 with Denon sc5000 or Rane 12's because I can have 4 seperate pad modes available at all times. Especially with the 5000's having the ability to be in multiple modes on players and mixer offers so many options. The Rane 12 still has cue points so that's a plus when I run those too.

Adding a thought, while I agree a tone control isn't preferable (especially on a mixer like my 72) having said that, I believe it is saved by the quality of the microphone preamp section. I use a Shure Beta 58 for my wired mic and a midrange Sennheiser for wireless duty and I've never felt I couldn't find a good sound that throws well and is clean. I would obviously like a 2 or 3 band eq option but it works well on 72 and I'll assume the 70 will do a decent job also.
On my DDJ SX3 I do absolutely need to run mic on the mixer channels to get the right sound....I'll just speculate that is because the microphone preamp is not the same quality.
Nice video Terry! I agree I think 70 would be next only because I think they slightly built a better version of the elite with something as small as not making the pad modes have a shift. Double tap changes mode small but intuitive. If there was no 70 it would def be an elite

The S9 wasn't meant to be a party mixer. It was strickly a battle mixer, which you can also party with. If you judge it as a battle mixer, it's about as perfect as you can get. The Rane 72, 70, and Reloop Elite is more designed for party use.
The tagline for the 72 and 70 is literally "Battle Ready". They are made specifically for battling. Rane sponsors the DMC battles and provides mixers for the battles.
@@logisticalstyles It's technically a battle mixer. But for me, being a battle dj, it feels more like a party mixer. Most old school djs use "battle" mixers to perform at parties. And that's what they're gonna the 72, 70, and S9 for. So these battle mixers are being judge as "party" mixers.

I'm a new DJ (my second year). I wanted to upgrade from the pioneer s3 so I bought this mixer last weekend on Wednesday and it worked fine when I connected it to my turntables. The following Thursday I went to practice and it completely bugged out. I restarted everything and it bugged out again but in a different way. So I restarted everything again and it started working like normal. But I didn't feel good about having just spent 1500 on a mixer only to experience two separate bugs on day 2. I returned it to b&h yesterday and exchanged it for the Rane 70. I wish I had seen this video before because I would've just gotten the 70 in the first place.

But it is clear that there is some improvements that need to made for this mixer to remain the mixer you see most 2 channel djs using...I for one would actually sell my S9 at this point... didn't think I would say that... still got mad love for pioneer and what they did but they have been out featured by Rane

Good review as always Pioneer better drop new gear this year the world is watching better get their belt out for Denon cause they are getting serious with pleasing the consumers, lil of the subject BUT if Denon put those motorize big M series jogs on a controller their going to score big aka new Numark NS7 yes its a demand for it lets see who drops one first.

Just looked at your January review of S9. Still relevant, I really respect your opinion. I did not know so many things like pan knob is gone these days. However, I am setting up a little club rehearsal space and party spit. So I need both Serato, RekordBox and VDJ. I want a nee S10 with the feature you would like to see and I am getting XDJ-XZ for controller DJs? Any thoughts to help me decide by mid-summer?

I know this is a little of topic here but I own a Pioneer DDJ_SX and then went out and bought the DDJ-SX2. the SX2 was much much lower in volume. so I sold it
@Cleveland Terry or ANYONE ELSE....This might be under your standards but have you looked at the Numark Scratch? I'm not DJing like how I used to (still using my PMC05 battle axe) and to drop $1500 is not happening. But I've noticed the Numark with similar features and I understand for $500 you're not going to get full S9 or Rane features, but is it worth a look?
So what's your order of mixers? Is it Rane 70 over the Reloop Elite which is over the S9? If so where does the Rane 72 fit into the equation? This is something I'm currently contemplating so your input would be greatly appreciated.

Yup, i bought an S9 a year ago and started getting into video mixing and it works fine with Rekordbox video
One of the things I don't see anyone talking about is the virtual channels a mixer has. You can use certain mixers in production software to record or stream the main mix or rip vinyl straight into ableton. All the rane mixers provide this and the s9 is very limited to doing this. I haven't tested it yet but does anyone know how many virtual channels the s9 has? I know the 72 has 14 channels.
I’ve been rocking my traktor z2 mixer. And I’ve been away from Serato for years now and I think it’s time to come back. The last time I used Serato was when it was called Serato scratch live/SL1. I’m really considering upgrading my mixer to the Rane 70. But you made a good point about waiting for the potential pioneer s10. What do you think?
I have bought the reloop three months ago new for 1000 EUR and honestly I wished I'd bought the S9 (used), The reloop crossfader is opening the sound sometimes while it's closed though adjusting the cut-in seemed to help (but it shouldn't be an issue at all). Also I am getting finally used to using the reloop effects panel, but it is not as user friendly as the S9, there is just much more you need to adjust. For me a big thing is being able to use real vinyl and the S9 just seems more user friendly as a whole.
I used an S9 yesterday and the faders seem much more smooth and fun to use.
Anyone feels the same way? I am really thinking about buying a used S9
its 2024 is this still a good mixer?

I think they did drop the price by $200. I don’t know if it’s only a post namm special, but usually when I have seen this a new update is around the corner so they can clear inventory
TheGr33k13 they dropped it to $1499, same price as the 70. It’s not enough imo.
Cleveland Terry ☝🏻 I agree. I sold my s9 last year thinking a new one was around the corner. But was mistaken lol. I really if and when they do update the s9 they change the cuing system. They basically put the same one on the seventy and I’m not really a fan

Heard there was a new firmware update... wonder if it fixes that issue. My right side XLR output shorted after a year...
@@djloso I believe that update addresses the MacOS Catalina compatibility issue. It isn't pertaining to the output issue
using s9 currently, as a battle dj s9 is a better choice for me IF compared to 72.. the 72 is just TOO much for me, starting from button, flashing fancy pad, etc. unlike the s9, tidy and clean. HOWEVER the 70 are different, a true rival to the s9.. never touch 70 before. so if i have to choose between s9 vs 72, s9 for sure (the hardware echo effect is much better imo), however s9 vs 70 is a harder choice.
if 70 is much more expensive than s9, i'll go for s9.. but if it's not that much, i'll go for 70. newer technology and better built mixer (rane mixer are seriously built like a tank)

if you understand programming, custom mapping the s9 isn't that difficult. i had all my user mode fully custom to my liking even with a silent cue button on it

Can you help me figure out why my S9 fader bleeds audio into the other side when fading? I hear it needs an “update” or I think the fader needs replacing. I don’t scratch so I know it’s not from my use. Hope you can help me out. Thank you.
People really need to stop disregarding Reloop. It IS the best battle mixer on the market and has been for two years easily. The 70 still can’t compare to what the Elite can do. It’s also a lot cheaper then the other mixers in the market. No brainer for someone looking to buy a mixer in 2020.
Carl d, how are the effects on the Reloop? From what I have seen, they are serato effects. Are there hardware effects on the Reloop?

I had a DJM-909 since 2010 and been having fun with it since and noticed the s9 had alot of what the 909 had minus the touchscreen. Do you think its a good replacement for the 909?

@Calvin L. Banks Jr. i use an old black macbook for music only. It runnin very well with an old ios and i still mix with serato scratch. Its more than good enough for what i do...
I also have a ttm 57 and so i can use both with the same software.

This was done 7 months ago and they, Pioneer hasn't released or given the appearance of putting out a S10 and released the V10 and now the 3000s is sending a message to the 2 channel scratch DJ community, IMO. Looks like the focus is on event and club venues and the controllers DJ users not the battle or 2 channel mixer users.
With all that being said, why not get a Rane or Reloop product, unless you are a Pioneer fb...????

is anybody still getting the hotplug issue with the S9 and touch bar MacBook pros 2016 and on? I had to sell mine as it wouldn't read my S9 if I unplugged and then plugged back in.

I’d love to know how much it cost to build these $1600.00 mixers everyone ran too. My Taktor Z2 is a beast. Bought it when it dropped to $600 and kept on stepping. Bought my pioneer sx2 when the sx3 came out and got a brand new one for $500. No major changes between the sx2 and 3. Just got mine for half. I guess I’m just cheap

The question none answers is "should i buy s9 or elite?".
There are some comments here and there complaining about the buttons in the top side of the elite,but performance-wise none had any complaint as far as i know,of course it comes down to preference because both have different approaches on some cases.But still the question has some objective stuff none have touched, "is S-9 good enough to Elite?".

do the color effects still work as a stand alone mixer? for example if I am using cdj's with a usb stick inserted with the color effects and toggle pad still work?
