- A big shoutout to Wes Johnson and his video about the very same topic:
• Lathe Tool and Work Of...
Much of what is in this video is based on that vid of John's.
To sum up, work shift Z is the distance from from a homed turret face to the chuck face. (Move the turret to the chuck and enter machine Z coordinate into work shift Z (if not enough travel use a piece of known length between the chuck and the turret, and sum that to machine Z)). Work shift X is the distance from a homed turret boring bar holder to the spindle center line. Use an indicator on the chuck and indicate a boring bar holder (take in account the flex in the indicator holder). When done, enter machine X into work shift X.
Set work offset by chucking a piece and measure from the chuck face to the end of the workpiece (with a caliper for example). Enter the measured length into G54(G55.....G59) Z. Work offset X is always 0.
The easiest way to set a tool is to have a piece in the chuck and have its length measured and set in g54. You activate a tool (T0101 for example) and g54. Now you jog to the end of the piece. You go to tool geometry offsets in tool 1 Z and press Z0 and measure. For the X you take a light pass on the od of the part, measure it (for example 21.45mm) and enter X21.45 and measure.
When you set all your tools at once in this way they are all in relation to each other. When you have set your tools and want to change your work, you just measure from the chuck to the piece and enter in g54. No other changes needed.
If you change a tool, you should again have a work piece set up correctly in g54. Then you just repeat the tool measuring as above.
A more accurate way of setting tools is to set a precision groung piece against the chuck. Enter the length of the piece in g54 and use that as reference.
A more accurate way of measuring a work piece is to have a tool set up with a precision piece as above. Then you activate g54 and a precisely set tool. You jog to the end of the piece. The workpiece length can now be read from Absolute Z. Enter this value into g54 Z.
Brilliant. Couldn’t have gotten my machine running without this video. Thank you
I love when you say by experience you will find your way. I have loved this way of doing things my way and learning the best I understand. Just cool.
I almost finished assembly after repair my cnc milling machine and in 4-6 month want buy cnc lathe. So its good video to prepare. Thank you! Simple easy to understand. Keep going! Greatings from Lithuania!
Feel free to ask if you need any help!
you helped me immensely you have gotten me out of the weeds THANK YOU
As a fresh owner of a Mori Seiki AL-2(fanuc 10t but without fapt), I appreciate this
Thank you so much had to start from nothing so this was a godsend.

Very helpful, just getting around to setting up a '98 Mori Seiki with Fanuc 16TTB control.
thanks a lot, i'm new to cnc lathe and i'm under training for fanuc 10T.
the technic you use for the offsets just remind me the way Peter from a channel you recommended (EdgePrecision) do with is Mazak Integrex. thanks for sharing !
I actually haven't seen that setup video from Peter. Will check that out. This is also very similar to Wes Johnsons method, but I'm using the turret face as refecence instead of a master tool. This is because I change tools quite often.
Your Fanuc controller is very similar to the early Mazak ( Mazatrol ) controllers.
Very Good instructional video looking forward to following along on the next one.
Never ran a Mazatrol! Hopefully I will own one some day.
very good. I like your explaination. and it is very usefull as the control is old verion. thank you.
Great video! Definitely helps to set the basics.

Thank you for video, i have old machine from school, they did always wrong your method is much netter, for inserting drill is much easer, just measere with caliper tot tourrit, part just measere with caliper to Chuck, to g54 much easer to start up! Thanks!!!
Hello! Please explain why the working offset has a positive value z616.726, although the machine coordinates are negative.
More videos on fanuc please

thanks for the information and the middle finger

You are realy great
I have trouble on what to do when you want to make new program. What you need to press to create new program. Some edit or erase old program an what about starting fresh
very interresting ! thank you

thank you
hello friend, do you maybe have post procesor for solid cam for the same machine, or what should be compatible? thanks.. fanuc 21t
Are you sorted with Post processor
Good video, just a few questions:
1) What was the purpose of the work shift offset? What was wrong about having your work coordinates relative to machine home?
2) What would have happened if you have typed "Z, 0, measure" for your G54 work offset instead of the stock's length? Would the work shift interfere with the 'measure' command?
3) Is the X tool offset command for a drill "X, 0, input" (to override the X offset value as 0.000)?
4) Do all Fanuc lathes have the same method of measuring X tool offset (from holder block to stock surface)?
I just started running one and you need workshift or you took lengths are wacky numbers. We run it just like the video.confusing control as it must be at home as before starting program other wise it goes from where it's at and position is off. Crash!! Also X- is bigger and x+ is smaller
hi i had problems homing the machine ,doesn't want to home but rather goes to limit switch .
I have never "played" whit a CNC, i have no idea . but i am pretty interested to buy a VMC for my shop. For me this video series are just what i need to make a idea. I want to make some classes , but i didint find yet . Tanks
Fadal is a great machine to start with! I will cover that soon too! I would not recommend taking classes especially if they cost you money. You can learn it really fast yourself with just the help available on RUclips!
sir g please tell me jaewoo company offset x and z
i have noticed on the screen that shows the overall measurements your machine in the home position is showing Zero on both X Z , in the screen highlighted ( Machine ) and
(Absolute ) why is mine different im having trouble getting the machine to go to the correct Co ordinates
thanks for sharing I will be looking out for your next lesson
Thanks! However these are not lessons, like all of my videos :-). Just to give you ideas, not to teach!
Onko ohjelman aloitusrutiineihin joku esimerkkipätkä. Yhtä vanhaa dainichia ollaan elvyttämässä takaisin käyttökuntoon.
I've always found CNC interesting. I wish I'd learned them years ago..... too late for me now.... they scare the hell out of me.
Never too late! They still scare the hell out of me as well :-).
Has anyone got in there sytem 10 Manual there is a page that has picture diagrams of all the tooling for the lathe that contains all the information need for programming in FAPT
I have the manuals, do you need the pictures? I could send them to you
Hai sir its a nice video...
I am having faunc 18i tb control..
The process u showed in video i tried but its not working could u give any solution..
Thank you, now I will try :)
Thanks, very helpful
I have Fanuc 15T ,turning length 3400.I am not able to tool offset zero less than 500mm , it says out of range and more than 2000mm also it says zero. So, i am able to offset only between 500mm to 2000mm.I dont know how to change, please guide me how to do it.
ruclips.net/video/HguE0TgT-WY-/видео.html
have you got a chart on all the tools for when entering the tool definition in the drawing part in FAPT
Never used the fapt system myself :-(.
I have problème in thé programme fanuc T10
on that machine is there a way to add tool tip orientation for different of cutters and threaders both from the top down or bottom up and also spindle rotation trying to future out internal threading on my tool set up page very new to this THX.
Not 100% sure about what you mean here. This is just a 2 axis lathe with a 10 position turret. It has no C-axis (spindle orient). You can still do threading in almost any cnc-lathe. In theory, you could have two or more tools in the same pocket one after another, by using additional tool lengths, but that is only useful in very rare occasions. Most often you can get away with the amount of tools that the turret can hold the usual way. If I didn't answer your question, let me know and I'll try again!
Hi. Do you know what error code c is in fanuc 10tf
ruclips.net/video/HguE0TgT-WY-/видео.html
Kiitos paljon
Loading and running programs? The manual makes no sense
So your tool length offsets are positive values, right?
Z is always positive, X can sometimes be negative. The distance from the face of the turret to the tip of the tool for Z and from a boring bar holder center point to the tip of the tool for X.

Hello like some help I have a hardinge cobra lathe 65 with fanuc 21-t controller and I changed the battery's and now I can't move the axis or make the spindle to turn if you have WhatsApp I can send you some videos I'll pay you for all your time
Different between work offset and tool offset
You change the work offset according to your workpiece when the job changes, the tool offsets are used to tell the machine where the different tools are relative to each other
I had to burn the machine 😢😢
Great info. Thanks.
For wathcing! Hope this helps someone.
