When Gamu Nhengu set out to record her first single, she took her time. Gamu says she “wanted to make something that would last, something timeless, classic and classy - like a Chanel suit.” She turned to the 1960’s for inspiration, mixing it with the mainstream pop and R&B she grew up with to create a sound she dubs Nu-Vintage.
Gamu was born in the capital of Zimbabwe then moved to the countryside in Scotland where she now lives with her family. It’s been an eventful first 21 years, and Gamu has been singing all the way. From an early age Gamu has been acting in plays, singing in choirs, and living life through her love of music. Gamu gained exposure on Season 10 of The X Factor UK even though she didn’t get far in the 2010 series. There was an outcry when she was sent home after boot camp, but her whole X Factor experience was over in a matter of weeks. Fans of the show even sent death threats to some of the Judges over it. Yet when she got home, people were camping outside her flat, sending her flowers, letters and record contracts. The media exposure also triggered a brief storm about her family’s visa status although they have always lived in the UK legally, and when their case went to court, it was dismissed in a matter of minutes.
She eventually signed to a Scottish independent label, G Sound Records, where she felt her opinion mattered. She recorded a set of catchy, heartfelt pop songs with a retro twist, the first release, is the vibrant party anthem “Shake the Room.” This is a girl who has always been determined to have a voice, and her real story is only just beginning.
It always upsets me when artists as talented as Gamu have songs as good as this but don't get the fame they deserve because their label and manager don't advertise it correctly. I only found it because I specifically googled what happened to Gamu after the X Factor, this song should have been everywhere when it came out!

Went from the X Factor boot camp where they turned her down and then to a live performance at some school learning thing in glasgow, to a christmas concert, then finally an interview where she says the X Factor was her 'crash course' in the music industry.

Alonso, You are a bit of an idiot aren't you? The show uses autotune, not the singer. They used it allot with others. You hear her voice here without any autotune and she sounds amazing. Now after reading my comment, it is time you fucked off from here.
She really isn't using autotune - she used to attend the school my mum teaches at (and the school I now attend!) She'd perform a LOT, and she was so good she's still on banners and stuff at the school.

To be honest, when I clicked the link to this song i was quite wary about it sounding like some piece of garbage just because I've not heard anything from her since the X factor, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised, how is she not bigger than she is now, her voice is beautiful and the beat and everything is just refreshing. I'm really not trying to bring race into it but I think Cheryl was thinking tactically when she dropped Gamu, considering that many black female British singers aren't as successful or as big as the ones in the US or even the white British female singers, she probably didn't know what she'd do for her or how she'd make it work so she probably got rid of her just to play it safe for herself and in a way she was right because at the time maybe her music would of flopped, but now seems a better time ,if ever, to come back and take the music industry by storm. I can see the resemblance between her and Meghan Trainor, but I also think that if she was well represented and surrounded by a team sharing her vision then we'll be hearing a lot from her very soon. I agree with WHLegacy,not trying to disrespect anyone because I can't sing and even if i could I'd never be as big as neither but Gamu is in MY EYES and in MY OPINION the better singer for sure.
