  • Paul Asay’s son Colin struggles with depression. After Colin overdosed on cold medicine and ibuprofen a couple years ago, Paul realized he’d never shared his own depression and anxiety struggles with his son. In his new book published by Focus on the Family, Paul opens up about depression and shines a light on the complicated signs, including feelings of sorrow, irritation, guilt, and worthlessness; fatigue and insomnia; changes in appetite and interests; trouble concentrating or thinking clearly; and even suicidal thoughts.
In this interview, he shares about his personal struggle with depression and how he learned to manage his depression. A friend encouraged him to start jogging, which led to Paul running major races and marathons. He suggests looking out, not in, forward, not back, up, not down. In terms of faith, he encourages prayer, giving, going to church, and seeking out the “thin” places (where the veil between heaven and earth is thin). He also speaks highly of counseling (and medication, if necessary). Paul’s experience with anxiety and depression will resonate with our listeners who either experience this themselves or know someone who does. It’s a beautiful, compassionate look at dealing with this mental burden.

I have had depression since my husband died 10 years ago. Am on medicine which helps somewhat but it doesn't go away completely. Since Covid I have been isolated, now over a year. I am old now with very little family near. Always alone. Very few friends that care. The only thing that saves my sanity is Christianity and my pets. Without my pets I probably wouldn't be here. I get to take care of something which is what all women are designed to do. This really helps. They love me and I live them. They are funny So I get to laugh. I sing to them and talk to them. This helps. It helps alot. I have tried going off of the meds but it never works without them. Getting a pet helps them and you too!-

It is a fight. Sometimes you have to pray through it. This covid thing is designed to increase depression.

Depression is a dangerous place. Do not see this as a gift. It can take you out of this world. No. Depression has to be fought at every turn, including fighting it when others have it. I know of 2 people who took themselves out becsuse of depression. No, I don't want to wish it on my worst enemy. Nothing, "beautiful" about it.
