    We have a pre LCI X5 45e in our immediate family and trust me, we all absolutely love it. My uncle has a level 2 charger at home and he really fills up a tank of gas once every 2 months. It's the best car ever in our family. This looks even more appealing!

    Agree, this is the sweet spot for the 24 X5 in value. Drove a 23 X5 40i loaner for weeks, was considering 40i then 24 50e came out. Much better ride w/ air suspension, even on M sport run flats, hybrid mpg is great, & it’s a beast in Sport launch, TC off, from a light. True extreme Jekyll & Hyde. Plus tech is way more usable once you adapt & understand when to use “Hey BMW” instead of going deep in menus. Bought w/ M Sport package for wheel look & steering wheel, $79K + US. Run flats are loader @ HWY speed, something to consider

Towards getting the early 411 on the 2024 X3 3?e, maybe Modern Motoring can plan a trip to South Africa and get one fresh off the line. I am not a Certified Accountant, all the same I do provide nearly free Tax Advice, and I am imagining that M-M will be able to put the trip expenses against channel income. Just saying. Ok cheers for now.

    The shifter on the X5 is backwards; you push forward for Reverse and backwards for Drive. I assumed once the i division were electrifying the X and changing the traditional shifter that they would mirror the i3 where forwards is for drive and backwards for reverse. Whenever I switch from driving the i3 to the X5 I always push forward for drive. Also the X5 excellence package has the glass controls which cannot be removed from the package but that package is the only way to get massaging seats.

    Don't know if anyone will respond since this thread is old but I'm looking at buying one of these to use occasionally for long road trips. (roughly 850 miles one way) For long trips like that, which X5 would be better, the 50e or the 40i?

    • @Modern.Motoring
      @Modern.Motoring  7 месяцев назад

      Great question.
      How often would you do these 1,700 mile trips?
      Are you mostly doing city or highway driving for these road trips?
      Outside of these road trips, is the balance of your driving city or highway based?
      What’s your average number of miles driven daily?

    • @jetfixer3207
      @jetfixer3207 7 месяцев назад

      Wow, thanks for the reply. I'll answer your questions in order. FWIW, I'm both retired and single and take these trips alone. (I find long drives relaxing)
      The trip is taken once or twice a year and including in town time at my destination generally comes to +/- 2000 miles total.
      The trip itself is entirely interstate, and the speed limit is either 75 or 80 all the way.
      Depending on my mood, I've done either 400-500 on day one and finished on day 2, or occasionally the whole trip in one day. (About 12 hours)
      When home I live in a fairly small town and drive very few, "in town" miles. (Probably 2500 or so in the past year) Plus an occasional 200 mile or so instate trip on a 2 lane highway at 50-55 MPH.
      I must admit, since PHEV's are something of an unknown commodity to me, plus the "known" mileage of the 40i is good, I'm leaning that way. (40i)

    • @Modern.Motoring
      @Modern.Motoring  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the info - here's what we would do in your situation.
      Get the X5 50e PHEV, and here's why:
      The X5 40i AWD is $67,500. The X5 50e is $72,500, a $5,000 difference.
      The 50e qualifies for a $3,750 rebate, reducing that $5,000 difference to $1,250 (not sure exactly how the rebate is applied in the USA as we're in Canada but ask your dealer to be sure.)
      With the up to 40 (forty) miles of electric driving per charge paired with your low "in town" miles, you'd save plenty of money on gasoline by utilizing the electric range the 50e offers.
      Here's my source for pricing: www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/x-models/x5/sports-activity-vehicle/build-your-own.html
      Keep in mind these prices are only MSRP; there'll be fees/freight/PDI/etc added to it.
      Keep us looped in as to which one you go with please - thanks!

    • @jetfixer3207
      @jetfixer3207 7 месяцев назад

      I read your suggestion and I'm definitely considering it. Just a few more questions though, please.
      Instead of a rebate, could you have possibly meant a $3750 federal tax incentive, because I did hear about that. Further, something that gives me a chuckle, in my home state, not only is there no state tax incentive, but there's actually a $75 hike in registration fees for PHEV's. (Not much I admit, but still)
      Another concern that's never been clearly confirmed or disputed is (in hybrid mode) the battery is unlikely to go 850 miles on a charge, even with the cruise control on, and the possibility of regen on downhill stretches. Once the battery is gone, I've read the highway mileage goes down to around 20 MPG, which is even worse than the Audi Q7 (EPA 22 MPG) and Q8 (EPA 23 MPG) I dismissed due to their poor highway MPG. (and lower power output)
      I also read somewhere (I don't know if it's true) the 3.0 I6 in the 50e has less HP than the 3.0 I6 in the 40i, which explains the poor highway MPG once the battery is gone.
      I should further mention that I'm currently driving a 6.2 V8 Escalade that gets me 12-13 in town and 18-19 on the highway, so even the 40i would be a massive improvement.
      This is part of why I went to the dealer to get PHEV explained to me more clearly yesterday, and they failed to do so. I understand the 50e has definite benefits in town, but do the high MPG benefits carry over into a long highway road trip?
      Based on this, are you still in favor of the 50e?

    • @jetfixer3207
      @jetfixer3207 7 месяцев назад +1

      In the end I kinda shifted directions and was looking at the X5 Xdrive40i "M Sport" and the X3 M40i. I drove versions of both and liked the X3, but it just felt a little too "twitchy/ immediate/hard" for a daily driver. In the end I went with the X5. I had to give up my ventilated seats I like, but it was the best all around choice for me.

  • @tomasvaitkus7866
    @tomasvaitkus7866 6 месяцев назад

    Unfortunately, the X5 50e is completely unsuitable if there is no possibility to charge it at home/office. You won't wait 4.5 hours at a fast charging station for full charge. It no longer supported preset battery charge level while driving.

    As a general comment these RUclips reviews tend to focus far too much on the old traditional motoring journalism model of speed, style and trim, and almost nothing on the technology. Its not weakness to acknowledge driving aids. Cars now are all about the tech. Does it work and is it easy to use. Can you see all four corners so you dont smash them on bollards, kerbs, cars or kids pretty much the number one accident by volume in cars? Surround cameras should be mandatory in every car not an optional extra. About 1 in 5 cars in my condo car park have minor damage to the offside lower front wing or spoiler. Can the software or any features be updated? A $1,000 phone gets 3 years of feature updates.
    The tech in my agricultural of tge shelf 2016 Nissan XTrail was obsolete before I drove it off the lot but it still had better tech than the off the shelf 2016 BMW X5. BMWs response was a condescending "its a drivers car."
    I just got a windfall and I really like the 2024 BMW 50E but its a lot of money for something that may be a dinosaur in 3 years, especially in a territory where the distributor has basically a monopoly and buys up last years models and sells them at next years price.
