Great Video, I've been racing on a Valve index for years now. The immersion is 2nd to none in VR, but can be taken away if there's a screen door effect or massive discomfort. The Index isn't overly heavy, but I think the pimax has a higher FOV. I've gone back and fourth btw triples and VR in the past and think I'm stuck in VR, I just couldn't get my car placement on triples as consistently as I can in VR. You're absolutely right about the hot factor tho, I have a fan pointed directly at me for races.

    • @jackr.749
      @jackr.749 2 месяца назад +1

Actually, the FOV in the Pimax Crystal is less than that of the Index (you might be thinking of the Pimax 8kx). Even the Quest 3 looks miles better than the Index visually, the Index's resolution was outdated when the HMD came out (Vive Pro and Samsung Odyssey already had the same resolution as the Index).
If you can get the Quest 3 close to your eyes, the FOV gets closer to that of the Index but with much better visuals.

@jackr.749 i have tried a few different for sim racing, but always went back to index for fov and fps consistency. I agree the resolution and displays are dated, I've been looking for something that matches what i like about the index to replace it. Unfortunately i haven't found the right combo of (fov, fps, s/w and res) that is worth replacing the index

@@TheAirun17 Good point, the Index is a great HMD, just not enough resolution for myself (it's sitting in the corner in it's box) and the Pancake optics of the Quest 3 are unreal, I think I never want to buy another fresnel lens HMD ever again. LOL
For racing, my go to HMD is the Reverb G2v2, I use mostly for racing and MSFS, the Quest 3 I use upstairs mostly for general VR gaming but have tried it with the racing sims. It's actually very close to the G2 in visuals but just with a HUGE sweet spot and edge to edge clarity. :)

I only race in VR, if people hate on VR they can hate, it's not for everyone, a lot of the population suffers from motion sickness. People complain about weight I just take it as this is my helmet. I even put on a balaclava just for immersion but also for sweat. HTC Vive Pro: 1440x1600, waste

HP Reverb G2: 2100x2100 (4.4M pixels to drive), super clear 1/3 center of screen, non-fatigue / lightweight, super cheap (200-300$), no latency, ideal for racing
BigscreenVR: 2560x2560 (6.5M pixels to drive), 2/3 clear screen, super colors, super-lightweight (1/4 of others, just goggles), ideal for simracing on motion platforms, $900+$200
Pimax Crystal: 2880x2800 (8.3M pixels to drive) super clear, super heavy, super expensive - 3x wasted ($1500)
Pimax Crystal light: 2880x2800 (8.3M pixels to drive) super clear, ok heavy but you will need super-expensive 4090 to run it, coz of missing eye tracking (foveated rendering reduces quality of areas you are not looking at).

For anyone wanting immersion then nothing beats VR, I remember the first time I tried VR in my sim rig I pulled into the pits and reached for the door handle to get out of the car at that point my mind was blown! Another time I went to grab the handbrake that simply wasn't there.
For immersion nothing beats VR and I'll go back to it one day in the future but for me the biggest downside of VR is it's so resource heavy needing a monster GPU to run it with all the graphical bells and whistles games offer these days, if you are happy to turn down all graphics options you can get away with running it on lesser GPUs

While I understand that the in-car immersion experience is unrivaled when it comes to playing in VR, there's so many things that is breaks immersion in elsewhere that really needs to be considered when going down the VR route...Imagine all the money you've spent on your rig, all the endless hours placing your button boxes, mapping your wheels and monitor/monitors to be where you want them and angled how you want, only to have all of that thrown away because of going down the VR route. Even with someone like myself with just a profile rig, TV and direct drive wheel, nothing takes away the enjoyment of me getting into my seat, turning on all my buttons, lights, dashes, button boxes and wheel etc and starting the car up and taking it out on track...I can't imagine you would have any of this immersion at all with a VR headset on because...well...you can't see any of it, you'd be going off of muscle memory alone...
I do get VR...I get it, I get the excitement it gives...But I still don't think we're quite there yet for it to be super mind blowing and revolutionary...I'd happily enjoy the effort I've gone to setting up my rig and the countless hours I've put into it for the sakes of looking around my bedroom in a virtual world...Obviously I've said is all subjective at the end of the day and it's owners preference. 🙂
Still enjoyed the video nonetheless. Good to see another video from you OC Racing.

Put it this way for you, my rig is simple for VR so it's great for people on a budget I use buttons and things that's pretty universal for every car but seeing the real dash in front of you of your favorite car gives off the same sorta feeling that I can touch it but obviously not it's not there. For people that love equipment in sim racing VR wouldn't be for them. There's a market for both and I love the fact we can race how we want to race with the equipment we can get our hands on.

I totally get why you would be hesitant to make the switch to VR if you have put a ton of work into making your rig look like a race car interior. I’ve built my rig around the usage of VR. Placing my peripherals in such a way that muscle memory is good enough to not result in scrapped knuckles. I’ve kept it simple with just an h pattern, sequential and handbrake. An ignition switch and engine start button integrated into my front mount plate. I also only need 3 wheels. A 300mm round for rally, a gt/formula rim and a 340mm round for classic cars and drifting. I can imagine how satisfying it is for you to sit down and fire everything up but then the process and appearance is the same for every car. I get to see the dials and gauges fire up differently for every car I get in and my wheels mean it feels accurate to each car.
It’s all down to what you want, what you are used to, and what you like.

Great review. To me - and I'm a VR2/console user, just sayin') the Pimax is way too complex and fiddly in physical design. It's massive and bulky, too, and overly fiddly to get the settings right, from other reviews I've seen. Boosted Media points to those issues.
It's too much a Heath-Robinson, or Frankenstein-like design. But, to give credit, when dialled-in, it does appear to be fantastic. All things considered, I don't think too many people could be bothered with faffing about, though.

The biggest problem for VR adoption is the weight and discomfort which some people can't sacrifice. Pimax offers a VR headset which lifts up yet another bar on the ladder in terms of visual quality (better resolution, better refresh rate). But that is just a step further, not a milestone - where what Bigscreen Beyond already achieved is a big milestone. I believe that further development in that area would allow to squeeze even higher resolution in such compact headset

VR motion to photon latency will always be a problem. The lighthouse system tracks your head at best 60hz...with re-projection math taking up additional time in the GPU frame calculation cycle. All in all when you move your head there is 16 to 30 ms of delay.....huge difference from triples where grey to grey time of monitors is now approaching 0.01ms for top end QOLED screens. In racing; latency matters. No pro's use VR. I think this is why. Immersion yes. Competitive No.

oled triples are close to 4000 dollars in canada. so at some point cost vs gain will come into play for most people. i swapped out my dell 32" triples for one oled 49" g9 but also use a quest 3. depends on how important visual quality to someone. i would say triple oleds would be the best way to go but huge cost. for reference that im not a cheap ass i have a $4k pc, $5k worth of simagic stuff, momo daytona seat, and a bunch of other stuff. will be adding sfx-150 next. quest 3 works awesome for the cost.

Def not the future lol also vr in general isnt. Many end up going bsck to normal racing because of the intesity and brain fatigue and other issues when doing vr for long periods.

I am waiting for someone to figure out how to use that new Apple headset as a racing VR headset. It looks like it would work really well. You might need to switch to Apple PC too... I don't know anything, I am just saying... My eye doctor already told me to forget about VR.
