"Trepalle" roughly translates to "Three balls"
probably one of the funniest jokes in Italy is: "what are the inhabitants of Treppalle called?"

This song is a proper celebration of northern Italy: Valtellina, Polenta, Cedrata Tassoni from Midgarda lake (Garda lake), the Como Drake (Lake of Como), POTA (an expression widely used by people from Brescia and Bergamo provinces that has so many meanings that is difficult to explain), many northern Italian cuisine references and Celtic roots and traditions. For the rest of the world Italy's most representative image is the one from central/southern regions, and northern culture is less known.

  • @SerialGufator
    @SerialGufator 3 года назад +54

    Italian guy from Valtellina here
Polenta Taragna is a typical dish from all Valtellina and towns near Bergamo (both are in the north of Italy, near the Alpi mountains), and it's famous for being quite a poor dish but hard to digest (there's a lot of cheese and butter, but of course everyone can prepare a "lighter" version), hence the reference to the "Presidente" line
I wouldn't call it bad or without flavour, since I eat it quite frequently, but it's quite different from the American common dishes
Another trivia about the Cedrata Tassoni
It's not connected with the polenta Taragna at all, but its spot was really famous and frequent back in the days, and as you said it was another suggestion for a song title that they wanted to include
The first line of that part is a reference to the old Cedrata spot, translated into "there's a lot of things in the world that you can do, build, craft" (which became in the parody "pillage, plaster, feast")
Also, the "subliminal message" is a reference about old Cedrata Tassoni spot, which had "promotional message" written in the top right corner as well
There's a lot of other littles gems hidden throughout the song and the video (like Pota, a common exclamation in the Bergamo dialect), but they're way too much to list them here

Damn it Tank, you need to come to live in Italy for a couple of years, absorb the culture and the language and THEN listen to Nanowar again. I mean, you can't begin to imagine how fucking epic this is, especially Giorgio Mastrota's presence here. To put this in perspective for you, imagine a well respected and professional US TV host like Anderson Cooper (known for his calm personality, idol of the middle-aged women around the US because of his good looks and known by everyone to be a serious and professional person) featuring in a Weird Al Yankovic song, except in this case Weird Al is a kickass metal musician and Anderson Cooper sings (pretty convincingly to be honest) about apple pies baked by the god of fire Logi or cranberry sauce cooked in Anahalla (Anaheim + Valhalla) in ancient nordic manufacts made by the giants

Loved this, A few things I noticed in the video: TV Giorgio and his lady assistant can be seen with her holding a big microphone, so I think they are playing the part of a TV team on a time travel visit to medieval times. So having a camera in the picture makes sense. Two other easter eggs I spotted: Stage with a skull - Wacken. And the last image is definitely a play on the famous painting of Jesus's last meal by Da Vinci

The "tv show" goes on throughout the video. On the left-side lower corner of the screen you can see texts/tweets "from the audience" popping up like on a real tv show. Here's what they say (consider most place names to be rather obscure, like on real tv):
02:02 @Lucia da Pinzolo - Hello, Giorgio, I've been following you since the times of "Bellezze al bagno" [a summer game tv show Mastrota actually hosted in the '90s], how nice to see you're still the same sweetie pie you used to be!
03:04 @Igor from Casablanca - that smile, that damn smile
03:26 # Mastrota you're forever handsome - I've been following you since the times of "Dancing under the stars" with Heather Parisi
[Mastrota never participated in Dancing with the stars, but Parisi did figure in the jury once]
04:41 @Enver from Tirana - One of us! Giorgio you're one of us!
06:31 @Silvia from Rome - Giorgio you're incisive for your irritability
07:09 @Vanni from Florence - Giorgio but for my mattress better wooden slats or tungsten springs with self-tapping studs? Asking for a friend
07:17 Anna Maria F - when I see you the blood rushes to my brain
07:48 # Giorgio give me your bresaola and your scimudin
[bresaola is dried beef meat, scimudin is the cheese just mentioned in the song]
07:57 @Salvatore from Campodimele - Giorgio I'm not mad at you but these pans don't cook shit
08:10 @Marzia from Cupramontana - when I make love to my husband I think of Giorgio
10:30 @V. from Brianza - Giorgio... THANK YOU!
10:52 @Dagospia [tabloid centered on scandals and gossip] - The offer Only for Today is not for today only
11:12 @Simone from Bulgarograsso - Giorgio this is your accountant, what are you doing? You're ignoring me on purpose

Tank, as a guy who was born and raised the valley next to Valtellina, Italy, I can tell that polenta taragna is really tasty in winter with some heavy stew due to its cheesy flavour. The viking theme really fits with traditions of Valtellina, even if the perfect match is not Cedrata Tassoni, which is a famous italian sparkling cedar based drink produced near Valtellina (yes it's subliminal message), but it is with red wines from the very same valley like "Inferno" or "Sassella" or "Sforzato", which are super good with super fat meals.
Giorgio Mastrota is well known here in Italy because of his long years doing tv commercials for pots and mattresses, his way of doing tv is famous here because of his youthful way of doing things even if he turned 60 years old recently, and also for his approach to the customer. As you can see he is very friendly in doing something that, perhaps, lots of other people from tv would have rejected and sued Nanowar.

I'm from Valtellina and we are used to eating it during the traditional feasts of the Alpine troops but also at home in the family together with the sausage, sciatt stew and sometimes even chicken ... regarding the fact that it is a volcano and due to when the polenta cooks it produces bubbles and that when they burst they launch sketches that are volcanic lapilli ... I am proud that it has come as far as abroad .... and now everyone is enjoying the Polenta TaragnaRock😎😎😎

I'm not sure if someone already mentioned it, but this song was created in live with fans, during the lockdown. And in order to choose the name of future creation there was a voting on Facebook. So the name "Polenta Taragnarock" won for some points over "Cedrata Tassoni elissir di Odino", and the band decided to put some note also about the "second place" winner. And then in line session they wrote the song together with their fans, that was really funny!

My take on the Cedrata Tassoni is that can be potentially used to help digest the polenta as it is usually eaten with cheese and other heavy things on the stomach. So, after a big lunch based on polenta, a nice glass of cold Tassoni brings you back to life. I mean, I'm from the North and we do love our polenta. Great reaction video man!

Polenta taragna is supertasty, the problem is that you eat on Sunday at lunch and literally keeps you going until next Friday. It has a ton of (unsalted) butter and cheese stirred in.
Also, in the second chorus they actualy sing "la pUlenta taragnarock". Pulenta is polenta in the dialects of Lombardy, and Valtellina is in Lombardy. (While the guys are from Rome.)

Not sure if someone mentioned it already, but back when people in northern Italy was really poor, especially in Veneto, they'd eat mostly polenta. But since the corn used to make polenta is not fermented with an alkali (unlike south american nixtamal/hominy) it is low in nutrients and that would cause severe nutritional deficiencies in people, and the consequent surge of diseases such as pellagra, which is mentioned at 7:06

Giorgio Mastrota was a famous salesman who had his sales space within several television programs on Fininvest channel networks and later also a TV presenter, but everyone remembers him for the sales of stainless steel pots and mattresses of the "Eminflex" brand. "
Nanowar of Steel have dedicated the parody song Giorgio Mastrota (The Keeper of Inox Steel) to him; in 2018 Mastrota sang with them on the stage of Lucca Comics & Games. Following the success of the song, the band then created a zany comic titled Nanowar - The guardians of stainless steel, starring Mastrota.

Cedrata Tassoni is a beverage famous because they don't change their jingle and spot from '80, I think.
They wrote "messaggio subliminale" as a joke because in Italy you have to put on screen if there's an advertisement or it's illegal: "messaggio pubblicitario".

My maternal grandparents emigrated from northern Italy back in the '20s, and of course brought recipes with them. My mom used to make polenta for us every now and then from her mom's recipe. Real, authentic, from-scratch polenta is absolutely delicious! (Although the variant we had the recipe for is a thicker polenta that cooked in a cake pan or bundt pan, had a somewhat thicker consistency somewhere between grits and cake, and was sliced with utensil that looked like a string between two sticks. Served with some Italian sausage, a good sauce and some melted cheese... perfection.)
Anyway, after I stopped laughing when I watched this song, I realized how much I miss really good polenta. Now I must go on a quest until I find some....

"Messaggio subliminale" is a reference to "messaggio promozionale" (promotional message)
In the italian television, during non-commercial program, if some brand pay to advertise they product the show productor have to show the "messaggio promozionale" write for legal reason.
In this case the tag on the bottle is removed, because the brand can sue the band for unauthorized use of treadmark (penal in italy) so is a subliminal message, that shape of bottle in italy is quite famous and even today tv show the same commercial created in 1982 (and have pure vaporwave vibe, so good), so anyone (even if you never drink it) know the shape.
    Is our coke

The camera you saw was intentional, because of the starting point of the video, in which Mastrota is filming a sort of commercial (you will see it later on the video).
The polenta was a common aliment among the poor people, based on corn, while "polenta taragna" is some polenta with a bit of meat, or cheese, or something else to give it a richer flavor; as food it's like rice which different culture eat with curry, with vegetables, meat or fish and it's a food cheap.

  • @dehro
    @dehro 3 года назад

The trick with polenta is often what you put in it.. in Italy we serve it with cheese (gorgonzola, fontina and other greasy/soft/stinky cheeses), or just butter, or rabbit, or chicken... and well.. it depends on you really.. those are all pairings that work.

The song was just "Giorgio Mastrota" listen to it because it has a beautiful melody. You will not understand the text because it is the internal culture of Italian television.

First time I listen to “polenta taragnarock” was in the short trailer about their “pop album”, then I perform some resource. Polenta is something that I know but I never taste the taragna version. But anything with Italian Cheese can’t be bad.
I think the music is nice, but when we know the context and pop local references it makes it even better (layers upon layers). We can listen to nordic death metal without really understand the lyrics… why not recognize a music about food?
BTW you should react to Old videos from Nanowar too
