- On October 2nd, 2016, Shlomo Mintz was awarded the Cremona Music Award 2016. He received the prize for his outstanding performances throughout his career. During the award ceremony at the Cremona Mondomusica fair, Shlomo Mintz was asked to play for the audience on the Stradivari "Vesuvius", built in 1727. In this video you get a backstage glimpse of how the Maestro adjust the instrument to his taste and preferences in less than one hour! After the prize ceremony, M° Mintz played the allegro from BACH Violin Sonata No.2 in A minor, BWV 1003, on this most precious violin from the collection of the Museo del Violino, which was brought to him especially for this occasion. www.ciceronema.com/shlomo-mintz

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet, but he's choking the hell out of those violins! I'm in awe of him as a violinist, but I've noticed that he presses more and more as he gets older.
thats how it goes unfortunately. perlman too
actually it's probably because of 2 things. First, the mic is too close to the violin so you can hear the noise. Second the room has really poor accoustics
I agree with u,hate this,but It’s his style
Ramai Sinhoroto alpin small churchs are the best for acoustic
Yes! I notice that too,his Ysaye sonatas are disturbingly too pressed😢 he is still one of my idols though
I don't think they have to be compared. Each of the instruments have its own unique beautiful sound .
A true master. Doesn’t have to be looking at the strings.
wow
unbelievable that you have meet this legends
Mintz always had strong catch on his bow..although sometimes a little tight sounding... The compactness must feel so solid!
Bravissimo il M° Shlomo Mintz e la voce di questo strumento è molto bella !!!! Pino.
Mintz...My King on the violin
우와. so. many. ever best violinist............. wonder ful ever.........
Os dois são ótimos.
It's is so funny to see how he uses his Kun rest the other way round.
And Kun in Farsi means Ars.
Haha - well spotted
wow what is up with that? i've never seen anyone use it like that before. maybe it's his eye-sight. lol jk
yeah what's up with that? did i use it all my life wrong???
and why the E# Major is he using the cheapest plastic one on a strad??
He's scratching those beautiful violins
He plays in this little room the perfect sound and articulation which is needed in a concert hall
Grater master!
Mints is my favourite also
I can't believe he moved the bridge.... whatever Luthier set that up is furious if they're watching. You never move the bridge. Shocking. It immediately lost its clarity. You change its relationship to the sound post and its geometry on the violin.
Has anyone noticed that he placed the shoulder rest the opposite way?
Eliav og course and Alexander,Best regards
It does sound a bit gritty, but that's how a violin sounds from real close. This sound's actually sweet and clear once you're far on a hall! The difficulty lies in knowing this when you study. If you try to sound good and sweet to your own ear, you won't project and people from afar won't enjoy that sweetness.
a-445. at least!
Best Violinist!!!
It s better to remember capricci nice trumpet playing anyway
6:58 song?
SAVROMx i don t know brass litterature very well
😂😂😂👍

I like the Mintz instrument more, the formant is more pronounced. besides, Vesuvius is a bit booming, you can hear that it's already sunset, although it's beautiful, of course.
My hands will shake with that Strad
6:58 song??
SAVROMx it’s a piece not a song
SAVROMx some sort of Paganini caprice i think
Does anybody know what piece of Bach he is playing ?
Yes, see the description of the video! " M° Mintz played the allegro from BACH Violin Sonata No.2 in A minor, BWV 1003"
cicerone music and art Thank You
What violin have Shlomo?
He told me some years ago (looks and sounds like it is the same violin) that it is a 'Stradivarius school'.
@@chenyang5448 do u know what song it at 6:58?
He plays on a guadagnini
Vesuvius is brighter, different point of taste
Senioraty tones
The bow... aiai
did any one catch what he did with his third finger at 7:17?
flattened the tip joint
4:38 as well
quite a nice way to get a semitone flatter
6:58 song?
He gave it?
His own instrument sounds better. The Vesuvius has projection, but the sound is thin, rather tinny. I'm not a fan of his own instrument, but it has a more full range of tonality - more depth than the V. You can also hear the stops better. I've heard better modern violins. Many things can improve sound - strings, internal things like bass bars, position of the post (finding sweet spots), humidity, regular playing, etc. Anyone understand the Italian?
Haha! And you really think you can judge a violin listening to THIS „RECORDING“….
I would love to bet some 30.000 dollars…see if you can recognize ANY violin in a blind test…….haha!!!
PROJECTION!!!!! With a microfone just 20 cm away from the violin…..
Can he play in Slo-Mo? And eat some mints?
Fucking terrible. Haha.
@@liamnevilleviolist1809 Rather ingenious, I thought. Got a small laugh out of ya, didn't it?
@@AJ-tp9bk It was more of a shrug of disappointment followed by the thought "Damn... people are always going to be making these puns."
@@liamnevilleviolist1809Ok. I'll try harder next time! I can't play violin, or any instrument, so I'm reduced to making up puns. Ta -ta!
Great violinist. Unfortunately, both instruments sound very scratchy, unpleasant and tinny here.
The best grater....
His testing the instrument sounds rough and scrachy, why? On purpose?
The microphone quality could have something to do with it.
He pressed too hard. That's all.
That's the tone that sounds amazing when it's in a large concert hall.
@@jaschenski I see.
@@jaschenski finally someone answer the question with knowledge and experience
Geez what has happened to his bow arm? Sounds like he’s sawing away at that precious instrument......🤦♂️
He actually uses viola bow lol

My friend, how is ephriam and alexander? Loves from DK Dorte( Claudio ex from Duesseldorf)
I will forward your message to the Maestro. I know the guys are quite in shape though! Thank you.
Anyone knows the violin he plays?Guadagnini?Stradivari school? Some say Stradivari school meaning what? that was made at the atelier of Stradivarius but not by him himself?
Personally for my taste I think that Vesuvius sounds better, he uses great pressure on the right hand and the Vesuvius takes it like a champ, more clean sound, but when he picks his own the sound seems cheap and scratchier.
Shlomo Mintz is a legend but could play in a better violin.
The Vesivius really sounded dull, its tone is very low. Like the tone of an electric guitar with 0 tone level adjusted. Maybe the string has to do with it?
More likely the quality of the microphone, digital compression and playback through your computer speakers. Also, very close mic'ed in a small room with nodes cancelling out frequencies, etc.
oh well, I guess he didn't use it. xD
Since the Vesuvius obviously is a Museum exhibit and rarely played it must sound dull and dead even in the hands of such a master and possibly with the best of strings and best of bows. Maybe the same is true of the beautiful Messiah Strad (presumably crafted by J.B. Vuilleaume) in the Oxford Museum that never was played in public. Probably a disappointment.
I understand the Museo del Violino has a curator who plays the instruments regularly so assume the Vesuvius probably gets some exercise, unlike the Messiah. Wouldn't be the same as having a virtuoso concertize with it though.
Agreed
445 hz?
I think, is really high A hehehe
His own instrument sounds better? (Student of Boris Schwarz)
what a difference of Sound!?? :-O
both sound shitty
@@daniellipkanov4424 you are shitty
It s like wine at some point of aging it only remains the bottle
The vesuvius sounds better, clearer, more focus and pop. But, unbelievably, he moved the bridge!! Only a luthier should ever move a bridge or sound post. It immediately lost its clarity after he moved it.
creaking
JESUS IS LORD
Terrible... 😢
Age was not kind to him, and he did not know when to retire. Simply an embarrassment.
