  • Arminius' ambush at Teutoburg was a colossal military catastrophe and a devastating blow to Rome's pride and power. But Rome was thirsty for revenge. The task fell first to Tiberius and then to Germanicus, a reputed Roman general who distinguished himself in Germania and fought the legendary battle of Idistaviso.

Rome divides and unites. Some people hated the romans Some loved them..that's just the way it is ..they had great resilience..lost a legion in Scotland then built a wall lost to the parthians and hannibal and sparticus .boudicca etc .but still kept going ...even after the goths sacked rome..still they recovered ..says a lot for them as a people...

The Romans didn't lose a legion ( the 9th, also known as Legio IX Hispana) in Scotland around 1068 AD. That is nothing more than a work of popular fiction. Evidence shows that they were (or elements of them) in the Netherlands around AD120, with the generally agreed view they were wiped out fighting the Parthians in Armenia around AD160 - AD166...

The Romans were inspirational and that's why they made such intimidating opponents. The Last Roman Legion- Legio V Macedonica which was founded by Augustus himself in 43 BC- was fighting the Muslims in Egypt in around 630s AD. Imagine fighting a military unit that was around before Christ was even born, when Cleopatra still ruled Egypt. Now that's intimidating. It was said that they held the Roman right flank (flank of honor) and stood strong against the Muslim onslaught, almost routing them before the Romans' own left flank was routed and they were surrounded. But they still held firm and did rear guard action to save many units. The remnants of this army and the Legion would form the backbone of Roman resistance in Egypt but it was not enough.

The massacre cost the germans more in the long run than it cost the Romans. 20,000 troops compared to several Germanic tribal groups exterminated and several more severely damaged, I think the germans learned a lesson from this. Problem is that the Romans, while being able to attack more or less as they wanted, were unable to maintain a permanent presence, and the battle of Idistaviso, while victorious, wasn't decisive.
Rome won like they usually did for much of their history: By industrial power. They had more (well-equipped) plebeians to throw away than most of their rivals had troops, and could lose entire armies just to learn and gain experience, and just tried again and again until they got it right. Most noticeably the western Roman empire fell once it no longer had a surplus of men to serve in the legions, and surplus production to outfit them with.

In fact, after Idistaviso the Romans returned to the old border on the Rhine because there was NOTHING beyond it!!!!
In many of the great battles won by the Romans they were outnumbered by their enemies but they won thanks to the Discipline, Training and Tactical Skills of their Generals....

Varos lost because he led his armies into thick forces on narrow paths and they were extremely stretched out and massing gis troops in the typical Roman formations was impossible. The Germans picked them apart at will. Part of the problem the Romans had was most of them carried the gladius, a very short sword more like a dagger which was ideal in use in formation between shields but not against the long swords of the Germans.
The Romans had a long sword, called a spatha, but only a small percentage of them carried one. After the slaughter of Vairos's legions they all carried spathas when they invaded to get revenge.

The Battle of Teutoburg Forest was a turning point in world history! The Romans may have gotten their ‘revenge’ on Arminius (rich, considering *they* invaded in the first place), but in the end they realized that the price of controlling territory east of the Rhine was simply too high. This is where the borders of the empire would roughly remain for the remainder of it’s rule. Arminius accomplished more than he realized!

After the defeat against Germanicus, Arminius continued to fight against the Romans. He engaged in several battles, including the battles of Pontes Longi, Idistaviso, and the Angrivarian Wall. Despite suffering defeats, Arminius was successful in defending Germania against the Romans.
In addition to his conflicts with the Romans, Arminius also had to deal with internal power struggles. He deposed a rival, Maroboduus, the king of the Marcomanni. However, as Arminius’s power grew, it made some Germanic nobles uneasy. Afraid of his increasing influence, these nobles assassinated Arminius in 21 AD

Interesting history. What I find even more interesting is human perspective and memory, and how selective, biased, and incomplete it can be. Hardly anybody remembers these huge invasions and titanic battles after the Teutoburg Forest Massacre had taken place. Thus, the necessity for video documentaries like this to flesh out people's very limited understanding of history. Isn't it odd how thoroughly the shock of the initial ambush and massacre eclipsed almost all historical memory of the subsequent military campaigns by the Romans to get their revenge and restore their honor, which the DID, in spades? Certain events in human history, if they make a big enough impression on the human mind, overshadow other events which may be of even greater magnitude.

The Romans excelled at warfare on open ground while the Germanic tribes preferred to fight the Romans in forests and marshes where the Romans couldn’t maneuver. The Romans killed thousands and burned everything they saw but there was no actual civilization to conquer and nothing of value to take other than slaves. With huge forests to conceal them, the Germanic tribes could resist indefinitely. Fighting the Germanic tribes until doomsday, just to kill them and take slaves, was too much effort (and risk) for too little return.

Rome never really got a grip on the German woods. We mainly get information from the Roman side. A lot of propaganda and spin made the Romans look better than they really were against other warrior cultures like the Germanic Tribes.

I mean, other than Teutoburg, the German tribes got their asses kicked by the Romans in every engagement. It just wasn't practical for Rome to hold Germania, sort of like everything north of Hadrian's wall.

@@Lawlzinator It's not at all established that the German tribes got their butt kicked in every battle and scuffle : that's just the point : that's what the Romans claim , but there's no hard evidence for it. It's precisely why some doubt the veracity of these claims by the sole writers of history in that part of Europe : the Romans.

Obviously the Romans held the Germans back for many years. And don't forget Marcus Aurelius who defeated the Marcomani. And maybe even the Quadi.@@guntertorfs6486

@@rickmorgan1441 Look at Germany who lost two wars on two instead and in the same century as well. One because the Italians mauled them in Vittorio Veneto .
      In the Lunderdoof's diaries :
" In Vittorio Veneto, Austria did not lose a battle, but lose the war and itself, dragging Germany in its fall. Without the destructive battle of Vittorio Veneto, we would have been able, in a military union with the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, to continue the desperate resistance through the whole winter, in order to obtain a less harsh peace, because the Allies were very fatigued."
And btw Romans were kicked where by Germans ? Also Italy may not be in good shape today but it's still a G8 country. Hardly as you are trying it to pass. LOL

Ironic - The revenge of the Romans against the Germanic tribe was led by a general named Germanicus. Arminius and his people were barbarians because they defended their land from the Roman imperialists? If they were barbarians, then they were fighting a civilised enemy that behaved like barbarians at times. Easter cones to mind

Just like any other nation, the germanic people were not a poor disenfranchised people who were oppressed by the romans. Everyone called everyone else barbarians in those days. Stop smoking the amess culture weed.
