"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin as part of "Porgy & Bess" back in 1934 and has been recorded thousands of times, notably by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke, The Marcels, Herbie Mann, Ricky Nelson, Billy Stewart, Janis Joplin, Big Mama Thorton, and Sublime (as "Doin' Time"). According to Guinness World Records, "Summertime" holds the world record for the total number of recorded versions (67,591 in 2017). The Billy Stewart version from 1966 resounds with blasting horns and rapid fire scat singing like you won't believe. The Janis Joplin version stands out for her singing, of course, but also for its psychedelic arrangement which varies considerably from other versions. Sublime leaned on the Herbie Mann version from his 1961 album Live at the Village Gate for their updated for the nineties version of the song. Check out the long version of Billy Stewart's 1966 cover. It will probably surprise you.
