No to much off topic here, as lot of people will watch DVD's through an A/V or HiFi system. Great heads up. Thanks
Thanks for the shout out and thank you for helping to spread the word about fakes and counterfeits! It's a huge problem that only seems to be getting worse. Thank goodness we can spot them and speak out against the practice.
Thanks so very much for your warning message! For sure, digustingly, the Grinch hustlers and swindlers would be out in full force during what should be the season of Christmas cheer. By the way, I do remember the enjoyment I got from the TV series of Perry Mason, Barney Miller and Newhart. But I gave up on eBay years ago after I received more bad items than good. Now, I bite the proverbial bullet, and buy whatever is available all new. I hope that your future experiences are all positive! Take care!
Nicely explained 👍
Jim 🏴🙂
Thanks Jim
Paul, sorry to hear about that. People can suck, and scammers are unfortunately out there, especially around the holidays. 🤦♂️ Very disheartening. Btw, now I’ve got the Hill Street Blues theme song stuck in my head. Thanks…lol Thanks, Paul. 👍
Yes, that theme does that to you, I know! :) And thanks for your kind comments.
Great topic!! Thanks for the update!!
Quite interesting, Paul. (Most of us have probably forgotten that there was a scandal back in the 20th century about counterfeit LPs on record store shelves.) You may not always be able to tell the authenticity of a DVD by the video quality. Barney Miller was shot on videotape, so there's a limit to how much quality can be attained (or is it "obtained?") from '70's video technology. Newhart's 1st year was also on video, but all later episodes were on film so they could be rescanned if the originals exist. Also, I've read that some '80's series shot on film were edited on an industrial Laserdisc system (The Twilight Zone is one example), so they ended up with video resolution that looks mediocre on modern TVs.
You can also spot a fake by glancing on the data side of the disc, towards the center, where it's blank, there should be a barcode, a partial match of the serial number on the case, and some brand/company involved in the production of the disc (like Sony, Technicolor, the BBC, to name some), all holographic.
Thanks so much for your warning. I immediately went and grabbed my Saint black and white box set which I bought from HMV a while ago. Now that has been playing fine on our player ...but when I put it in the computer it only has 3.9GB. So I then got down my complete Dangerman. That has 7.42 GB. It's a minefield out there and I've not really thought about it. I should do 'cause I bought a fake Abbey Road cassette from Strutton Ground Market back in the '70's and should know🙂. I like to support HMV as much as possible and buy from them, but I also check on Amazon 'cause they have buyers reviews. Your version of Hill Street Blues got very bad reviews! Hope you get all your money back.
Hill Street Blues story. I was in a restaurant in Summerland, Ca, went to the mens room and while standing at the urinal, and standing next to me was the actor who played Sipowicz (SP?) I declined to shake hands.
Blimey! Hehe.
Love off topic stuff
Barney Miller! Haven’t thought about that show in ages,. I remember my parents watching that way back when though I was too young to understand most of the humor. Hill Street Blues was considered “prestige tv” at the time with its adult themes and use of arc story lines across multiple episodes. This show i WAS old enough to watch, and remember being amazed at the “realism.” But compare that to shows nowadays (eg Breaking Bad and many others) and you realize just how dated it is. Anyhow, sorry to hear about your misadventures with bootlegs…
Yes, HTB was certainly grown up TV back then. Serious stuff indeed. Thanks for your comments.
Thanks Paul. Sorry to hear about this. I was also scammed a few years back when I bought the Beatles mono box set, cd. It looked good on initial checks, but on closer inspection the text and art was a bit fuzzy the worst thing about it was it wasn’t mono! I bought it from an Amazon marketplace seller. I never got a refund as I left it too long as it was placed in my collection and I didn’t get to it for a while as I was between houses.
That's a first for me - didn't know there were counterfeit Beatles box sets out there although, I shouldn't really be surprised.
Agreed, I just received a DVD movie that I knew was bootleg just from the case. I did a few simple checks and it was 100% fake. Great topic
I have a fake box set of the original Edge of Darkness series, I noticed many of the points you state I got it at a local market at a good price and when i went back a month later the stall was not there. it goes on a lot. The only thing i have bought ftom EBay which were fake were Gillette razors. never again
I don't buy DVD's anymore; I spend most of my cash on beloved vinyl. What I will say is these days, not sure FAKE VINYL is a thing, but counterfeit vinyl or at least very badly produced vinyl is now prominent in the current market. Avoiding fancy 180g pressings from mass produced factories with poor quality production is difficult. The imagery for the infamous Roxy Music's Country Life 2022 edition art is very pixelated, out of focus and the sound is so flat and lifeless - I make my point.
Thanks for the heads up. I think I’ve been scammed on some foreign language DVDs I purchased last year on the title, “Winter’s Sonata” (Korean). I could never get the first disk to play.
Hi Jeremiah, was that eBay too?
@@TheAudiophileMan I’m not sure. I doubt it. More likely Amazon, but I really can’t remember. I tend to stay away from EBay, scared off by all the stories I’ve heard; although, when I really need something, and they’ve got the only one, I’ll bite.
Is part of the problem that some of these sets are only available in US, and so only that region code? Therefore criminals have seen a gap in the market whereby they can copy them to make UK region sets?
Yes, that's a good point although I know American friends who also suffer from such purchases.
This is why I use Amazon where possible. No hassle returns. Reminds me of the old comedy series WKRP Cincinnati.
WKRP - a favourite of mine!
@@TheAudiophileMan Evening Shade was another favorite.
Amazon sell bootleg too.
last year i got scammed with facebook stuff ,a not so good batman related item made of plaster lol...
Report the sellers even if they offer a refund. These people are supporting organised crime even if they are only selling contraband on from another source. This is not a low level criminal act, it’s a multi million pound industry.
