Per your description, looks like Authur K. has created a spectral tilt control via continuously variable MM cartridge loading prior to RIAA equalization. A simple concept that's very difficult to implement correctly ~ Once again Khoubesserian's "Outside the Box" thinking has made itself inside one. Quite clever indeed.
Nice review Paul, glad to hear Arthur is still making great waves, yes he was always a maverick, that’s me going back to the Pink Triangle days.
Very happy you reviewed the Akutrak. Pretty difficult to find proper info elsewhere. Keep up the good work! Greetz from NL
Looks like you've been undoing the front panel screws!!!
Not me guv!
So it lets you crank the eros from 1 to 11. Thanks for keeping this family friendly 🙃.
Another interesting one Paul. 👌

I wonder how the Akutrac would work with an MC cartridge & a step up? Any thoughts?
As it's an MM phono does that knob adjust capacitance? I'm not sure "potentiometer" is the correct description, unlike in the case of the icon PS3 where it really is just a volume control.
From whence did Sinatra draw his pain? Were his trousers not pressed on time?
I can see you read the biographies Jeff. That is exactly it.
Not wishing to be too picky as I find your reviews informative and I see no sign of bias. But I would think from your description that 9/10 rather than 8/10 would fit - appreciate that these can be fine margins, also it's not cheap.
Thanks for your reviews anyway.
The noise floor could be lower, the fact that a two box upgrade isn’t available, as mentioned in the vid, is frustrating. As it is, my 8 is equivalent to a magazine 5 Star review. That ain’t bad :)
@theaudiophileman great review! Thanks. You really are getting better at this.
After I see your videos I often speculate about the reasons you don't have more subscribers and views. The information is useful and informative, the content is tremendously well presented, and the script is uniquely literate and exceptionally professional - from a journalistic standpoint.
If I may share here a guess. Your videos have the value, wit, and method, but in your eagerness to put your own personality into the presentation (after all it is YOUR channel) you limit the appeal. You write an informative, amusing, and entertaining script but it's delivered with a voice, accent, and, how to describe this... personality that's maybe limited in its appeal.
"The Audiophile Man" - sort of evokes a nostalgic time of clinking glasses of brown liquor, swanky lounges and living rooms with curvaceous women present but not in charge, and rooms with really good stereos.
Think about having a sultry voiced woman deliver your script. Watch the ratings skyrocket.
Hehe. Well. Ok. Thanks for the critique and it is very kind of you to take the time. To even bother. When I started as a freelance journalist back in 1988, I knew I would never be rich because I just cannot bow to corporate commercialism. It’s why I never grabbed a job at a large publishing house. Just hate being told what to do, I guess. I just cannot do the lowest common crap thing that makes people money because if I did that I wouldn’t be able to sleep nights, I’d be taking 20 showers a day in a hopeless effort to remove the crud off my soul and I would - shiver -sound like everyone else. And yes, my formative years were the 70s… so there’s that.
I appreciate that Paul. I really do. Maybe though think about making some changes but maintain that independence and integrity. Doesn't have to be a sell out just because it's more appealing. Stay independent sure. Think about the presentation.
Very interesting, Paul! I have great respect for Arthur and his achievements and have followed his progress with interest over several decades. It is no surprise to me, then, that this phono preamp performs exceptionally well and is very nicely constructed. I agree with @amok281 that your description corresponds more to 9/10. Very desirable indeed. All the best, Rob in Switzerland
The MoFi Sinatra Capitol box set (16 LP's) is among my prized possessions. 'Scuse me while I disappear...
Mine as well. A go to set.
I don’t know why but ‘S’cuse me while I disappear’ that one line, is somehow the most important lyric I have ever heard (I know Sinatra didn’t write it but my goodness, he delivered it). Crazy as that sounds. Maybe I’m thinking of the time he said it. A time when everyone conformed. Everyone was scared stupid to be ‘different’. To talk back. To think out of the box. To show their feelings. There’s something about that line that packages Sinatra and shows how vulnerable he is. For all his front and bluster, his songs show how scary life really is. He did that. Other people just sang those songs by rote (and I gave the LPs from those artists) but Sinatra used the songs as a confessional. They were raw.
I looked up the price, good thing I was sitting down!
Why did you look up the price? I list it at the beginning of the video. 🤨
@@TheAudiophileMan I come from the world of written reviews, where I can quickly scan for info. I did watch your sound quality and conclusion sections.
If you'd included perhaps a brief comparison to a lower priced alternative the review would have carried a little more weight. Thanks though for an excellent review.
It beats everything priced at 1k and lower. There. Hope that’s brief enough.
It is the size of the Lehmann phono amp simple and 👍
I would think for all that money they could at least try to align those inputs, and I can understand why he didn't want it opened up. I am perfectly happy with my Pro-Ject DS3 B which can handle mm and mc, has RCA and XLR, sounds great and is only $799.
The Waxwing phono makes this obsolete
Insanity paying that much for a MM phono stage, Spend it on a better cartridge and the build quality looks shocking.
It seems ludicrously expensive for what you get.
Agree totally... it costs as much as the Tecnodec that Paul used it with.
I'd love to hear one and I'm sure it'd sound amazing, but even then that price is punchy.
I disagree. I think it's offered in a sweet spot above entry level pieces (project, et. al. ) and more serious pieces (modwright et. al. ).
