    I think for The Empire Strikes Back, Battle front would be a good one. Catalyst would be my choice for Rogue One as well, but I have to admit that book, then 'Rebel Rising', could work. Those two books and the Rogue One novelization make a good unofficial trilogy. You get the entire character arc of Jyn Erso.
    Your Tarkin choice as not a bad rec.

    Great video! I'm more of a EU guy, but this gave me the spark to also start reading the Canon novels.

    If you were to a Legends version of this, I already know what you would pick for Phantom Menace, and maybe the rest of the films.

    Thanks for these insights Jonathan. A long-time movie fan, I’ve only recently gotten into the books, both Legends and Canon. As I’ve been collecting these books, it is interesting to discover how and where these tie into the films.
    Because the sheer number of novels is daunting, I’ve decided to start with the Youtini Ultimate reading order (I think it’s called). I’m just about to start Bloodline to round out their ‘foundational five’ and I’ve enjoyed everything so far. I’m looking forward to so many of these, particularly the Thrawn books, since so much has been said about them and the character is not referenced at all, IIRC, in the movies. I’m just starting with the series shows too, so I’m just meeting characters such as Ahsoka, etc., which I see are important characters in the books.

    The only one that feels a little off is Thrawn, I loved Tarkin and think it fits A New Hope well enough. But Thrawn isn’t quite right, though I agree it’s not an easy choice. I think I would have to say A New Dawn, just because I feel like it captures that sense of adventure and fantasy that’s so overwhelming in Episode V. It’s still not perfect, it’s basically completely overlooking the Luke aspects, but it’s the best I’ve got haha

    Rogue One was so much more fun having already read Catalyst. It was a great tie-in and the payout was awesome.

    I thought this list was great. Didn't mind the Tarkin pick but I'm a fan of the character and Luceno SW in general so that helps.
    As for Empire I can see Thrawn working there, but first thing that came to mind for me was Battlefront Twilight Company by Alexander Freed. I haven't read that book in years and yet I can't not think of it when I watch The Battle of Hoth.

    • @jonathankoan

      That’s a good point. I’m not the biggest Twilight Company fan, so it didn’t come to mind as quickly for me, but that’s a good pick.

      That’s a good one. My recommendation for a canon novel would be Inquisitpr: Rise of the Red Blade
      My Legends Rec might be unconventional: but I think The Unifying Force, the final New Jedi Order book might have some thematic similarities.

    I would say Bloodline goes with The Last Jedi more, but that's only because Rian Johnson contributed plot points for it. Kinda gives it "Extra Canon" status lol

    • @st.sithis7933
      @st.sithis7933 Год назад

      I always most associated Bloodline with The Force Awakens because of the Hosnian scene. I felt like TFA needed more heavy lifting from outside material to get me to care about the resistance. Ofc it also helps understand Ben better for The Last Jedi so that's still fair to say.
      First thing that comes to mind for TLJ for me personally is the Rise of Kylo Ren comic series even though I'm pretty sure its release was more closely tied to Rise of Skywalker.

    Solid list here. I probably would’ve included Leia Princess of Alderaan and Lost Stars somewhere but I’m not sure where… probably as some OT books

    • @st.sithis7933
      @st.sithis7933 Год назад +1

      Now that you mention it Princess of Alderaan probably helps getting back into A New Hope the same way the Kenobi show is probably supposed to. They're both coming of age stories for the twins too.
      I haven't read the Han and Leia book so I can see Lost Stars fitting decently with RotJ. They both have similar spots on the timeline and the scale of the book might make it match well with the finale of the saga.

    Really glad to see Bloodlines in there as episode 7 felt rather flat to me but this was the important Leia story that was missing from the films.
    Not sure any book could make episode 9 watchable though.

    • @jonathankoan
      @jonathankoan  3 месяца назад +1

      I think Lost Stars hits the theme and tone, and feel more than Thrawn does, and Thrawn is much more character, based and set way earlier in the timeline.
