    The Crimean War was a very important war of the 19th century. It saw France under Napoleon III stand up to Russia's claims over churches in the Ottoman empire. From this it grew into a larger conflict, where Britain, France, Sardinia-Piedmont and the Ottomans faced off against Russia. The coalition of the Western powers came out victorious, but what if this changed? If Russia won the war, would they have taken the entire Balkans, paving the way for global domination?

    Here's an underrated POD: what if Italy had unified as a federal state in 1848, rather than as an unitary state in 1861?

    • @alexzero3736
      @alexzero3736 Год назад +69

      This would need the Pope to be kinda leader of it. Sardinia and Two Sicilies were the most significant powers among Italian states, and last one was heavy influenced by the Pope.
      Maybe co- Rule of Charles Albert and Pii 9?

    • @Ulmicola
      @Ulmicola Год назад +35

      @@alexzero3736 That's what quite a few thinkers actually wanted, back then. And it was the Pope's sudden change of heart that sunk the whole thing. An even more niche POD would be for the brief alliance between the Duke of Modena and revolutionary Ciro Menotti to endure, in the 1830s. There was a whole, hare-brained scheme to put the former on the Italian throne after a series of revolts engineered by the latter.

    • @JB-bb1bh
      @JB-bb1bh Год назад +4

      You might even see the weird thing of federal Italy getting pointers and inspiration from the United States who got it from Rome.
      Each Italian state would have conflicting laws and much more local like the Holy Roman Empire or modern US states.
      Could see pope in an alt modern-day being basically a more politically stronger British monarch, think like most president in Europe or USA vice president.
      He is much more as a face and tourism and soft power like British monarch.
      Yeah you might see him flex it once a lifetime but popeman likely wouldn't.
      See USA vice president being a tiebreaker vote being relevant.

    • @Ulmicola
      @Ulmicola Год назад +3

      @@JB-bb1bh One of the main theorists of 19th century Italian federalism, Carlo Cattaneo, had Switzerland and the United States in mind - in fact, he moved to Switzerland later on in his life - so it's likely that a federal Italy would've resembled something in between them, except there would've been quite a lot of variety in the forms of government of the individual states, with monarchies and republics under the same flag.

    One thing which wasn't mentioned is Greek participation in the war. Greece, a newly established kingdom, with large claims on Ottoman territory, was unsatisfied with the British position of supporting the territorial integrity of the Ottoman Empire. As soon as the Crimean War started, armed insurrections began in Thessaly, Epirus and parts of Macedonia, with support from Greece. The revolts saw success, however attacking the Ottoman Empire meant that Greece was indirectly on the side of the Russians. Britain initially offered Greece the Ionian islands and small adjustments in the borderline in Thessaly to stop supporting the rebels, however Greece declined, and the British fleet blockaded Athens, landing troops in Pireas. This also led to a plague outbreak. Greece backed down due to pressure from the British and the eventual Russian defeat meant that they were in no position to bargain. However, if Russia won thanks to Greek help, that would probably mean that concessions would be made to Greece as well

    Now here's my suggestion for an alternate history I haven't seen done anywhere. Alexander III, father of Nicholas II, both of whom were conservative, had an older brother who was the original heir to the throne called Nikolai Aleksandrovich. Nikolai, as far as I know, was much more liberally-minded than Alexander, and may have been a reformer just like his father, Alexander II. Unfortunately, he died when he got sick with meningitis on a trip around Italy. If he were to survive, would Russia perhaps be quicker to reform and fare better in the end?

    I agree with this scenario, but it's not enough to stop at that last map. *The interesting things would start to appear after WWI* - would the Bolsheviks fight to incorporate Romania and Bulgaria into Soviet Russia?
    Would Turkey have stayed neutral in WW2?
    *Would Germany have invaded the USSR in WW2 without the Romanian oil fields covering the fuel demand of the Wehrmacht?*
    *Would Stalin abandon the prospects of expanding to the Turkish Straits* (promised to the Russian Empire in *1915* according to *Constantinople Convention* but withdrawn from the negotiation table after the regime change in Russia) *like in our timeline?* This last question relies on the previous one, i.e. 'Would Turkey have stayed neutral in WW2?'.

    What if Britian, France and Austria sought to keep the balance of power by partitioning the ottomans (so power grows somewhat evenly), as they think direct rule of ex-ottoman territory is a better buffer to overagressive Russian expansion and intervene on Russia's side resulting in a massive winn agaisnt the ottomans but a long drawn out peace deal.
    I think this is a potential option, after all the partition of poland had already happened twice, britian and France were imperialist themselves and the ottomans were already seen as very weak.
    But if nothing else is a fun scenario to try and guess the post-partision borders and diplomacy.

The Sith Empire is a major power, but still nowhere near as strong as the Republic now that they lost the element of surprise. The only real benefactors here are the Sith species, since they aren't genocided at the end of the war by the Republic. Naga Sadow continues to rule until he dies naturally like Marka Ragnos, continuing the Sith Golden Age for another century or so. After his death Vitiate might be strong enough to take power, but he is much less powerful with no Nathema Ritual and would at least partially be kept in check by the Sith Council.

    What makes this event actually interesting is that Russian influence on the Balkans, basically prevents WW1 from ever happening.
    A more influential and powerful Russia in the Balkans would have no need to cause unrest. And the Austrians wouldn't be able to expand past Croatia into Bosnia and Serbia.
    Meaning the Balkans would've become Proxy Vassals of Austria and Russia here. Meaning the territories would be more homogeneously divided, prevent cultural and civil unrest.
    Also most of the Slavs in the Balkans preferred to be under Russian influence than Austrian Influence. Specially because this Austria is not yet Austria-Hungary, meaning it hasn't even considered reforming their government.

    Could you do a what if alexander the great reincarnated in 1920 and became greek king so he could fight ín the greco turkish war and ww2. It would be cool to see how he would reform the greek society and economy. What I mean by this is alexander is born into the greek royal family in 1900 and becomes greek king in 1920

      If this Alexander had the same education and environment in his youth as other early 20th century Greek royals he might not have made decisions very different from the actual Greek monarchs of that time period.

    If Russia won that war it does not reformed, not abolished serfdom, not begin industrialisation and not reformed army. So to 1870-1890 it would lost Turkish wars and cannot annex Buhara and Kokand too . And finally Japan freely occupy Far East Russian territory.

    Russians already crushed the Ottomans in the Caucus front winning every battle there, the only Ottoman commander to even slightly deliver setbacks to the Russians was Omar Pasha who fought in present day Romania.

    How or if WW1 comes about here might be changed if the independent Balkan states are essentially Russian satellites. Austria-Hungary would have to think a bit more carefully about the dangers of Russian intervention with a much longer prospective frontline opening up immediately in the east. Russia aligned Bulgaria would also mean a lack of Bulgaria in the Central Powers, so in theory you could see Serbia holdout longer and continue to be a pain for Austria if the war does otherwise break out in the same fashion and see the same alliances form. It's not a huge change in the dynamics of the war, but it may make the Balkans a bit more difficult for the Central Powers to deal with on account of the lack of Bulgaria on their side. Allied Bulgaria would also create a threat for the Ottomans, in terms of its potential to seize what remained of their European lands and push right up to the straights, threatening to shell Constantinople.

    Hello,
    My passion project for the past 8 months was making a scenario where Russia won the Crimean war. You may have even seen my map as it's the first thing that pops up when you search "what if Russia won the Crimean war" in google. An outdated version made 5 months ago, but still. As time passes, and the more I learn about the conflict, the less dramatic I make it. Here is the first map I made, 7 months ago, and here is one from 2 weeks ago (IMPORTANT: both are set in 1930, not right after): (edit, I give up, i cant post the link. Ive been trying for half an hour using alt accounts, but I cannot link to imgur. I think it goes to spam... just know that one features a world similar to mr.z and one more similar to this timeline but still a lot different)
    (Keep in mind that, while the point of divergence is the Crimean war, the timeline is realistic in that the butterfly effect is present, meaning things like almost no person conceived after 1853 is born, as different sperm would fertilize different eggs. One tiny change and a different person is born, thus radically changing the timeline. This is not a timeline where I make the most realistic possible scenario, this is just a thought experiment of what could have happened)
    As you can see first one was very inspired by MrZ. And I agree now with you that he made it way too big of a deal. Plus I too now agree that Austria would not remain an ally of Russia as I originally thought. However, I think you went the other extreme and changed too little. I understand what you are saying, but an event such as this would change some things quite a bit. You only briefly talked about the effects such a defeat would have on Britain and France after such a brutal war. Napoleon III just came to power, sent young men to die horrifically, and, lost. Why would frenchmen stand for that, and then be sent to Italy for some vanity project (as they may perceive it). Britain too, which believed itself to be the pinnacle of civilization, just lost to eastern slavs after investing so much. In my timeline Brits end up helping the CSA, to help the economy, regain prestige, and stick it to the Russians who were sympathetic to the USA. Now, I am not saying that is too likely to happen, it's a bit of a far cry and relies on the butterfly effect, but still, it's a possibility. What I am saying is that such a defeat would have an effect, even if not a very drastic one.
    I really like what you are trying to say here, to not make every scenario a dramatic change-all. However, I don't agree with this scenario too much, especially the long-term effects. Still, if you or anyone disagree with what I said, feel free to reply. I changed my scenario before after some feedback from others so it can happen again! :>

    Eh, I think itd be a bigger cost for the Russians. The Ottoman army had been reorganized and modernized under the rule of Abdulmecid I. Only the budget really held it back. In the Crimean War, the Ottomans largely held off the Russians on their own, only loss really being a bit of land in the Caucasus in the later part of the war. They were pushing into Bucharest as well before the Austrians forced a Russian withdrawal.

      If it wasn't for the French and the British, The Ottomans would ceased to exist earlier. The Russians dominated the Ottoman Army both in the Sea and land, your "empire" would've collapsed and replaced with another Middle Eastern Caliphate

      Not in the Crimean War or really after tbh. The war of 76-78 was lost due to the political instability of the Sublime Porte. 3 Sultans had come and gone in 1 single year. Also, "your empire" I am not Turkish. The Crimean War saw the Ottomans defeat and hold back the Russians and even push into Russian-occupied Wallachia. France and Britain were a factor in the Empire's survival of course. I think it is unfair to write off the entire Ottoman army just because of that
