It's crazy how environmentalism went from a bipartisan issue to a dividing one in 50 years
Not crazy; deliberate.
Absolutely
Noooo.... because I read an article for Earth day and it was talking about spending more money on "QUALUTY" clothes. I was pissed
well... the low quality clothes is nowdays all plastic... all the microplastics in our water, food, where we live, in us, in animals.... is not a good thing... they can also leach chemicals into your skin... causing hormonal dissbalance...
@@ayuumi6262 yes. I’m aware but the article only said to buy. It didn’t talk about recycling, it didn’t talking about the why, it didn’t talking about second hand. It didn’t even mention what kind of materials your clothes should have.
The thing that annoys me the most is that some people just have no common sense. I live in California and when you see the aftermath of some earth day parades and there is literally trash lining the streets! It’s just people who want to be able to say ‘see I care I’m doing something’ but they really really don’t.
Not to mention the NIMBYs co-opting the environmentalist movement to prevent new housing from being built in cities. Like, do they realize that any housing built in cities can help mitigate urban sprawl??
That's what makes me the most mad when people do that, just to say I care about the planet and throws a paper cup on the grass and walks away.
It's what people there do. Show out for a big skeptical just to convince themselves they care, and that their making a difference. They do the same exact thing with electric cars. You're still killing the planet, but hey. The media tells me it isn't so I must be making a difference.
One thing that helps tremendously against single occupancy vehicles is to allow work from home for those with computer based jobs. And yet… companies (and cities) push back hard on this. I think work from home is a relatively easy solution that most people want and can agree on.
The cities loose too much money when people stay home. Same with the small business who rely on people in the city being there.
@@Eternalsunshinejewelry if people got hired for a bit less time, we would either have a higher employment rate or reduce production, thus reducing consumerism, possibly. Maybe. Thus people wiuld have more time to buy groceries and go to town to shop. Maybe I'm wrong, though. Please, tell me what you think.
@@Eternalsunshinejewelryyet the economy didn't collapse during covid, people actually spent more because they didn't have to pay for 1 to 2 hours of commuting, sure small businesses went under, but we didn't understand that there was an unfair advantage because of apps like doordash were more profitable for large food commercial chains, now cities are looking to have local delivery services so the money is more concentrated in the city.
@@Eternalsunshinejewelry during c@vid people had more money to spend on stuff, and the economy didn't go under because people had money to spend because they didn't need to pay for 1 to 2 hours of commuting.
When I was in elementary school, we celebrated Earth Day by making prepared crafts from kits with plastic foam and plastic pipe cleaners and plastic googly eyes indoors under florescent lighting and I can’t see how that promotes a connection to the Earth. When I was in kindergarten we planted A tree- a single tree. The corporate “Earth Day” has severely affected how we’ve educated future generations on climate problems and there needs to be a lot of effort put into changing that and teaching Earth science rather than corporate “Earth science”.
If you’re an educator, you need to step up and teach your students how to actually connect with and appreciate the Earth. And yes, that climate education journey can start as young as infancy.
The title tells the tale. Earth Day is now viewed as an opportunity to sell. But originally, it was more about conservation and protection of the land and resources. Like reduce, reuse, recycle!
It should be changed to green washing day
My whole family is so confused about why I want to stay in a city. Like at home I have to drive 20 minutes to get food, and I cant walk anywhere, except the woods lol. The city I want to live in, I could walk 10 minutes to the store, and just exist outside without needing to sit in a car
I feel that. I don't live in a city but suburbs, and i can walk to my neighborhood shops (a block), center of town (two miles) and the shopping part is a not bad bike ride and yet my family is always bothering me to get a car.
OMG people get it so wrong, thinking living rural or otherwise "in nature" equals being eco-friendly. Ive seen lots of posts online about it (ex: saying they want to save the earth and live in a forest) and it's so annoying.
Yes! My closest grocery stores (in the next town over) are neither walkable to thanks to being on a major road with no sidewalks, nor sustainable, nor treat their employees well, nor do they have good produce (most is rotting/moldy). I have to go 2 towns over to get to a good grocery store, and 3 counties over to get to a bulk store.
Granted, I have more access to locally-made goods and services by roadside produce markets and farm-to-table butcher shops, but they're everywhere in my county EXCEPT my town.
I've also had this discussion with my parents. They moved to the countryside, 20minutes car drive away from their workplace, which also triggered me having to start in a new school to have their "american deam" or something 🤠 before themat everyone lived less than a mile from their occupation...
For those that are able, now is a great time for planting wildflowers! Get some seed-bombs or loose seeds (make sure they are native to your area) and scatter them in tree pits or vacant plant boxes! A cheap and easy way to actually make change in your area
We went to a museum and they had a bee flower bed with a capsule machine next to it. Few cents for a capsule of seeds and a nice gacha feel.
I loved that, they should be plastered everywhere. I put them on my balcony this week, I'm moving but I'm sure gonna take em with me and find a place in the new concrete yard ;u;
Chevron, let me fix that for you. People do, companies destroy.
ooh that's good!
Happy to see a history of Earth day and call to action here. I am a old Gen Xer (58) and first heard about Earth Day in Girl Scouts in the mid 70s, when we focused on education and conservation. In the late 80s I started composting, organic gardening, and recycling (before there were curbside programs.) Local vegetarian potlucks and food co-ops were meeting places for more learning and activism. I would love to see Earth day (and possible Earth month) return to its educational roots, and am happy to say that many Millennials and GenZers are both more informed and more vocal than many of my peers.
The Cuyahoga river actually caught on fire multiple times!! Nowadays it’s a relatively clean river. Unfortunately other rivers in Ohio are still heavily polluted due to agriculture, leading to regular toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie. The Maumee river, for example, is labeled as an environmental Area of Concern by the EPA. Growing up around the Maumee River, we regularly joked about how toxic it is. And it’s the largest watershed that feeds into Lake Erie unfortunately…
my son last year came back from Earth Day at school with a plastic water bottle and plastic reusable bag sponsored by a company that produces toxic chemicals and they didn't tell anyone how to be really eco friendly cept for the tired recycling cliches . 🤬. my son told me I learn more from you Mama. He's 9. Teach them young how to be eco !
Really happy to see/hear you are an EXCELLENT role model. It really DISGUSTS me to be living in this US-filled consumerism corporate greed country.
My daughter was born in 1975. i breastfed her for a year and when her teeth came in, they rotted. She had the four front teeth pulled before she was two and went without for several years. The dentist and doctor told me it was caused by DDT in my milk. I was always a tree hugger and was so criticized for it. It isnt much better now but i am glad to see so many young people trying.
Tree huggers should make a comback! It would be a very grounding experience for kids, imo.
😮that is insane. I think people forget sometimes that there are real consequences to our health when these things are allowed to go unchecked.
In my neighborhood, we are having a potluck on Saturday for Earth Day (easier to gather together than on a Monday!) where we will bring something that is good but we don't want anymore to give away and talk about what we could do in our little neighborhood like sharing some gardening tools or something else. That last part is inspired by one of your recent videos so thanks! We'll get there!!! Keep it up!
Important takeaways of actions we can all take for Earth Day!
1. Push for legal definitions (sustainable, organic, compostable, natural, green, eco-friendly, biodegradable)
2. Teach-ins/Panels
3. Push for Extended Producer Responsibility
4. Focus on specific legislation (end fossil fuel expansion, expand renewables, Green New Deal)
5. Protests, marches, call campaigns
6. Meet with politicians & reps (Prop up reps who are actually standing up for environmental issues e.g. have them lead teach-ins, ask them how to get involved, where to start)
"How the fuck did we get here?" indeed - Thank you for this. It is super confusing to see how uninvolved the masses in the US are now compared to the level of activity in the 70s. Especially considering how much more dire the situation is now. I know that the sunshine movement is really trying, but it is a difficult battle against corporations. I grew up in Niagara Falls, NY and my family was evacuated from our home, in 1977 (I was 3), due to the Love Canal environmental disaster that started the super fund. I am sad to see that even the super fund is now gone, even though brownfield sites are still a big issue in this country. It would be cool if everyone felt like EARTH DAY IS EVERY DAY! After all, this is the only planet we have to live on. It's our home and we should be treating it better. But that is what your WHOLE channel is about. Thank you for your service. :)
I work for a nonprofit that does cleanups year round and earth day is one of two events that we give away items as appreciation to our volunteers. I never liked that we were creating more to potentially end up in landfill. This year we did a hat and tote bag and gave the options to take it “if they need it”. Would love to hear alternative ideas from anyone!
THANK YOU so much, for bringing up redelvelopment! It's such a huge issue and it really isn't given much attention because it's not the 'going shopping / spending sprees' type of consumerism.
Long story short, a small park near where I live was redelveloped to look more 'eco', more 'green'.
I.e. they ripped out the old metal play equipment and replaced it with wooden play equipment which 'looked environmental' and had nature designs. But was actually less open-ended and less good for children to actually play on.
They ripped up the grass and replanted everything too - except the trees, which they made a big deal out of (according to signs) 'protecting' by fencing them off whilst the redevelopment was underway.
1 year later, the city asked for citizens opinions on how to go about 'essential' budget cuts to PARKS and also libraries and museums (my 3 lifelines whilst I have lived here). Imagine the £1000s they could've saved by not needlessly redeveloping that park. Probably a year's salary for someone that would allow the library to stay open that extra day rather than reducing opening hours...
Rant over! 😅
Anyway, thanks for another insightful and engaging video. Wonderful work! Xx
Every day is Earth Day here too. Doing a No Spend 2024 and working on developing my barter skills locally and online.
Rachel Carson is one of my heroes! So glad to see her mentioned. For anyone who wants another deep dive, the book Silent Spring Revolution goes into everything in immense detail!
You are such an inspiration! You're the reason I started my sustainable living journey about a year ago. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for bringing up the issues that corporations are trying to avoid with EVs.
Can I like this video a thousand times? Omg this is something I've been more and more thinking about ever since I first learned about sustainability and global warming in school. This conversation in a broad and massive scale is so overdue. just absolute perfect video Shelbi, god how I wish this could get viral
the whole EPA thing happened pre- citizens united and i feel like reversing that decisioj is the first step in getting our power back as constituents
Such "radical" ideas. I can't believe how politicized it's become and the irony of sponsorships straight from the source of the problem! Thank you for this concise summary.
I feel like Earth Day/ Earth Month is a double-edged sword. It gives voices to environmental issues that matter (environmental advocacy, considering sustainable practices), but also can be used in a way that trivializes environmental activism (like environmental consumerization). In terms of tackling environmental consumerism, I think at this point, one of the best things that we can do is make fellow consumers more conscious about the things that they are buying, and teach more people to be analytical and critical about the companies that they are (inadvertently) supporting. The more people are thinking in this way, then the more people will be willing to induce and support systemic change, and the easier access for busy people to make a difference in bettering the environment.
Why the heck did I get a climate denial prager u ad on this 🤦🏻♀️
Me too! I was so confused
At least they are wasting their advertising money on you😅
I started following you in my quest to live a minimal lifestyle. I've always been interested in being more sustainable but following you has turned my life around. Love, love your no BS attitude! Through my journey I can't believe how much money I am saving and my family and our little part of the planet are so much better for the changes :) You are making a difference!
I have written both email and USPS mail to ALL of the government people in my state (PA) on numerous occasions and I ALWAYS get the form letter/excuse that they have "looked" at my issue and will do their "best". I have NEVER seen any improvement in my life OR anyone else's life in all of my time on this planet. If they were to do cuts they would find ways to increase their pet projects and to give themselves raises.
I find the form letter non-response responses so discouraging. I'd rather they didn't respond to me at all. Oh well. At least they can't pretend none of their constituents ever expressed an interest in the matter.
@@thatjillgirl The events from yesterday's gov bill passing TRULY pissed me off. Not only they wasting the 95 Billion dollars, BUT waving Ukrainian flags. With the ongoing passing of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) I am no longer going to be doing ANY correspondence as I don't need feds coming to my front door.
I was alive for the first Earth Day, we were called hippies, tree huggers etc. Realize that quite a few people in government now were not alive during that time.
Fellow Austinite here! Great video, thank you! I think having more teach-ins is such a good idea. Pairing education with hope and alternative solutions could go a long way. Checking out the ATX Cares Collective now!
shelby i absolutely love your content and attention to detail, as a daughter of an immigrant there's a lot to change about my life as i knew it to be more intentional about my purchases and actions. i'm slowly starting my sustainability journey and you inspire me to maybe make my own channel of the process of my switch to being more environmentally conscious. i appreciate all that you do!
Do it, I would be interested!
I'd like to see legislation against planned obsolescence
Absolutely! Most people probably don’t want to keep replacing but it gets tough when nothing can last more than maybe 2 years :/
Shelby, I am an ecology student and lifelong naturalist, the information you pack and effectively convey in this video is amazing. New fan! Your work reaches a lot of people and I am confident than folks like us can gradually change the mindset of the populace away from shallow signaling and "green" consumerism, and instead towards introspection, critical thinking and actionable plans. Bravo!
In our house, Earth Month is just because April is the time the weather is warming up (live in a cold region), and to clean up the yard from all the things that was wind or freeze damaged over the winter. Before putting the garden in in May.
Thanks for this Shelby! I totally agree that “earth month” is a marketing campaign that dilutes Earth Day-and it distracts people from the intent behind Earth Day entirely! Even the other day I was in the store and saw advertising for “earth month” and thought “oh yeah, I have all month to do something”. Let’s just say if I give myself an entire month to do a task it will never get done. Thank you for the reminder to focus my efforts and not forget about the day. You’re so right, a single day is easier to focus on.
An in-person teach-in treated like a conference without badges, formalities, or swag would be an interesting thing to do .
Our area uses Earth Day for a lot of park amd public space clean-ups.
😅😅 thank you for not butchering Cuyahoga! As someone who grew up in Cuyahoga County, along the Cuyahoga River, and make great use of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park I appreciate it!! ❤ also, to defend my River, after it caught fire (technically more than once. Ok, technicallymore than 10 times....) it helped to inspire, create and pass, a lot of different bills and organizations like the clean water act and the EPA! Also, no pollution caused fires since 1969!!! (Small fire in 2020 after a fuel tanker car crash that leaked into the water)
I had actually never heard of Silent Spring until 3 Body Problem. I hope it has a big resurgence in pop culture as a result
I always look forward to my birthday but not because it's my birthday but because its Earth day! 🎉 Hope everyone has an amazing Earth day! ❤🎉
when I was a kid I would go out of my way on Earth Day and Arbor Day to find the least healthy-looking tree in my immediate vicinity and give it a hug. I did this until I was about 12, at which point we moved to a place with less trees (and also developing MDD made me not want to go outside LMAO)
I am so grateful for your channel!
Thank you for putting into words what I've been feeling ❤
I went to Starbucks with my mom yesterday and they had a sign out for their clean cup with a discount and stars. I pointed out that you could bring your own cup prior to this and get the 0.10 discount and they would clean the cup for you (as long as you held the lid which is considered the most contaminated part.) My mom pointed out it said it had to be clean and she missed the point that they had been doing this before but now that they could market for it, they added a bit more incentive and made it mandatory for the cup to be clean first, aka brownie points at the peak. To be fair, it was awkward to have someone clean the cup for you, especially when it was already clean and it will save time they don't have.
I had bought a cup prior to grad school because I knew I would be traveling more often. But because most of my purchases were in the airport, they didn't do the personal cup (probably for traffic reasons.)
I swear I learn more with your channel than I did 4 years in environmental club at school 😭 more people need to find your channel!!
This makes me so so happy 😭 I’m so glad I could share this with you!!
@@Shelbizleee Thank you for taking time and having so much patience with explaining everything in detail ❤️
work from home and shorter work weeks would be so much better for the environment as well
Great video as always BUT show me how you style your hair! 😊
I have a question! What do you do about trash can liners in your home? I've had the idea to only use a big one in the curbside bin, so we can put loose trash in there and tie it up on trash day (because I know trash should be contained somehow). I think it's a good idea, and I'll save money on liners for the inside. I can't find any companies that make big bags out of recycled plastic, but I did find compostable ones. What do you think?
I remember when I was working for a big american company known worldwide, they gifted us a small succulent each for earth day, while this company could do way more than use recycled material for their devices, plus a lot of people did not care about their plant and they were just left to die (I managed to save 2 from uninterested colleagues + mine) it was very sad
great video!! 💗
Love what you do, Shelbi! Thank you for calling this out and talking about these systemic issues. Community is the way forward. Community is the BIGGEST THREAT to capitalism.
Shelbizleee please read The Unsettling of America by Wendell Berry! Another great book up there with Silent Spring in my opinion. Highly recommend
Love your videos. Been watching for several years and they’ve kept me inspired and motivated to make positive changes. My family has said my actions have inspired them… so you really have a ripple effect!
The original was to hold others accountable, to educate, encourage individual person's participation, and pow-wow on the up coming year's anticipation. Silent Spring would be a good thing to re-read. There are fewer and fewer birds seeminly every year but definitely every other to 2 years now adays.
this video is amazing!! keep it up
First view (I think) 😂❤!! Luv your content, you are simply the best!!! Please keep it up ❤
We the real fans out here!
wow, the calender collective is awesome!! i really am considering doing that for my town now!
Amazing video, very comprehensive and moving. Thank you ❤️
Just here to say that I recently read Silent Spring! It is SUCH a good book with both beautiful prose and good information.
Yessss, Shelbi! Great video, and great list!
I should do a teach in. I'm an ecology evolution and natural resources major. And I think education is soooooo important! I love teach ins!
Queen, ty for spittin
Great video. Another great book to read is Poisoned Nation by Loretta Schwartz.
Thank you for sharing this video and the historical context, super important for how we can move forward as individuals and communities 🙏🏽 🌎💚
happy you enjoyed it!!
Im a day early but this earth day im plantinf an elderberry bush in the back yard
Great food for thought. In my opinion earth day shouldn't be about concerts and parties and events. It should be about planting trees , understanding compost and development of skills. Recently I've dived down a "fast fashion" rabbit hole. It's rather disturbing that influencers with crop tops from GAP are telling people to leave fast fashion. If you can't knit, weave, sew, dare i say spin yarns or fibers, then who are they fooling. Just a thought.
You're inspirational and i love everything you say 😅
We can do this people!
As a Wisconsinite it makes my heart warm that Earth Day started here!
All four Earth Day and earth month education, by corporations should be not allowed to participate in any capacity 😆
I want to make everyone watch this video!!!
LoveLoveLove 🌿♥️♥️♥️
I really noticed this more the last couple years and it’s actually pretty annoying especially when companies just discount things like clothes and what not and trying to entice people to buy more when that goes against what reducing means haha. The US needs to fix its education system because I think if we did that we would have more competent people to fight for common sense things like not polluting and dumping trash everywhere and designing better towns and cities and making them more sustainable because these days people protest things they know nothing about and scream and yell up and down city streets without making a difference or doing anything at all.
Can you do a video about Green ICT practices? 😊
So I haven't seen any videos on a zero waste/ sustainable first aid kit. Would you be able to make a video on one? If you already have one can you link it
hehe fun fact: its so on brand for me to be an environmentalist bc my birthday is literally earth day! but yes! earth day is everydayyyy
Find that Earth Day & Environmental activism is so important. We should be spending our lives & weeks & months. The whole year. Taking action. So, it being more than a day wouldn't be terrible. But the consumerism & commercialized aspects of it today sucks. Seeing it as a marketing tactic or contribution to a reason for sales is gross.
hyper individualism has been the death of community. we need each other!
Hi :) Great video! It's amazing how everything has changed so much, and not always in a positive direction...and you're right...we shouldn't let corporations define "natural" or "sustainability"...to be honest, I was trying to organize with a local climate justice group and it was a shit-show....they were so disorganized and kept changing their campaigns and focus! Also, I am a person with a disability and soon I will be graduating from college and hopefully getting back to work, which means I might not have the physical and mental energy to volunteer a lot, especially with an organized group that meets regularly...any suggests for accessible ways to make a difference on our own for those of us for whom, distance, time, health and other barriers will be hard to overcome? Wondering if you think that signing petitions is helpful at all or if it's a waste of time...because that's one idea I had to go beyond the personal lifestyle changes I'm making.
i find it sad whenever only gen z is mentioned about their sustainability efforts, when as a millenial i see other millenials teaching gen z coworkers and siblings to be greener than they are.
This is a good video!
Hey Shelby! Can I ask how you cope with your cats and the plants? I literally only have cat safe plants in my house, I'm so scared he will chew them!
Hi shelbi. Love this video very informative. Wanted to ask if you could mention loved before in a video. Theyre a company that does second hand teddies and donates to make a wish. I love teddies so much so i want to make as many people aware of this brand as i can. Women owned too! ❤❤❤❤
3 years of community college and one water resources degree later, I have come to the conclusion that the only time positive things happen for the Earth is when a major lawsuit happens. We had to sue our own government for clean drinking water and people are still dying of contaminated water due to poor infrastructure. This kind of history should be taught in grade school during Earth month.
Cool video. Happy Earth Day(the good version of it,lol)! ❤ Let's all strive to have Earth Day every day in our own homes.
You keep saying you don't know why all this legislation hasn't gotten passed yet. It's because corporations are "people" and they can donate as much as they want to any political campaign because donations are "speech" and people have the right to free speech. So corporations own our politicians and therefore run our political process. Fun times. But look into Citizens United. If we have any hope of getting back to an effective political process that works for the people and not corporations, we need to overturn Citizens United and get big money out of our politics.
Thanks for this! Citizens United is at the top of my list of frustrations and I wish I had thought to include that specifically.
@Shelbizleee you don't need to use profanity in your videos. There are people who don't want to hear it.
@@cziegle3794 I'm sure that's true, but that's how I speak so it is what it is.
I feel like Earth Day has turned into any other holiday.. let's have a sale! Buy more stuff...
Earth day should be EVERY day, I mean, this is literally our only planet 😅
One of the worst drivers within the energy conservation and resource division is ESG. It's basically a platform for corpotations to pat their backs and please stakeholders while buying credits or working numbers around to make themselves look great, but to be able to be "Carbon Neutral by 2035" is in fact, and actual lie with current manufacturing and consumption trends. An entire cultural shift would need to happen, but it won't.
Yeah I'm totally with you. Not giving up on the cultural shift on my end tho, lots of good things are happening!
Here after 34 min 😎

yep. Absolutely. Yah and EPA is generally a joke now.
I think Earth Day should be every day…
STARBUCKS MADE A LIMITED EDITION EARTH DAY REUSABLE CUP???
LIKE shut up 👁👄👁 whats that supposed to be
Its sad how hard it is to find an Earth Day event in my city thats not sponsored by an oil company and/or just music and art shows. Not that that isn’t important but I’d just like something where I actually learn something new and do an activity for the planet. Too much to ask I guess
Bruh my birthday is on earth day. I have to share my birthday with the whole fucking planet 😢
