Florianópolis is a Brazilian city, capital of the state of Santa Catarina, in the southern region of the country. The city is made up of the main island, the island of Santa Catarina, the mainland and some small neighboring islands.
With more than 100 registered beaches, it was previously considered that Florianópolis had 42 beaches, this being one of the municipality's mottos for decades and still often cited. Commissioned by the Florianópolis Urban Planning Institute (IPUF), for the first time a complete survey of the beaches of the capital of Santa Catarina was carried out, in which more than 100 beaches were mapped. As the objective of the work was toponymic, to comply with the municipal law that determined the signage of all beaches, more than a dozen were left out, so unknown that they didn't even have names.
Florianópolis has a population of 574.2 thousand inhabitants, according to the 2022 demographic census by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
