    I love the sonograms when baby is sucking their thumb. So precious. ❤. And, I think it’s important for mommies to know that this test is based on the information without any harm such as X-ray or radiation ☢️. It’s just the same as catching sound on Doppler in the water; through sound. ❤

    I am a junior in high school who is very interested in the ultrasound tech career. I have been watching videos and researching online. I just went to my first meeting at my local community college for their Sonography Program. Now I can’t lie, the women at this meeting put a really bad taste in my mouth about the career which really made me second guess myself. The girls who are currently in the program said that they have no life and that the schooling is harder than those who are going to school to become a doctor or engineer. They also said that you use a lot of physics and anatomy, something that in high school is hard for me now- making me wonder if I would even be capable of making it into the program. I heard them tell stories that they lost relationships because of how time consuming the program is and that their only free time is to do necessities like showering. At my college it is only a 16 month program so yes it seems like working extremely hard for 16 months is worth it but they also said that you’ll be working 5 days a week, 8-12 hours a day and then end up working over time and on falls on your days off. This sounds very overwhelming and stressful. I know it’s a lot of hard work but the way these girls in the program described it made it seem like they did not think it was worth it. How accurate is all this?

    • @DrTracyPapa
      @DrTracyPapa  4 года назад +12

      Sorry for the late reply. Sounds like these sonographers are giving you the worst case scenario. The training is intense but when you graduate you have choices. You can choose to work in the hospital or office setting. You don't have to take call at night if you work in an office or outside the hospital. In other words, you can tailor your career to your goals and family life. Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes.

      I would first identify which ultrasound schools you are interested in applying to. Then check with each one about prerequisites; different schools may have diferent requirements. Good luck!

    I'm trying to find what I would like to do with my life/career. I am a male very interested in sonography, especially in OB sonography. It's certainly a female dominant career, can anyone working in ultrasound give me some insight of what I should do? Are mothers comfortable with male sonographers?

    • @DrTracyPapa
      @DrTracyPapa  4 года назад +8

      I have worked with some great male sonographers. There are some patients who are uncomfortable with male healthcare workers for cultural or religious reasons, but for the most part, if you are professional and respectful, they don't have a problem. Before you embark on this career, get your head right. Make sure you are pursuing this for the right reasons. Do you like and respect women? Do you want to be a highly skilled professional in a healthcare environment? Do you want to be part of one of the most important experiences in a family's life? Can you handle having your heart broken when a baby has an abnormality, and stay positive and compassionate? If you can say yes to all this, go for it! And please keep me posted on your progress!

      I'm currently an expecting mother and I had my first ultrasound done by a male sonographer, he was awesome! He was very friendly and professional and I felt very comfortable with him. So dont be discouraged, just provide the best patient care that you can and you'll do good in this career. Go for it! Keep us updated on your journey 😊

    Does the ultrasound expose the baby to a lot of radiation? I’ve had a lot of people tell me that and it’s frustrating because I’m a type one diabetic so I’ve been getting a biophysical ultrasound done twice a week since week 32 ( I’m 36 now)

    • @Grace-fc8np
      @Grace-fc8np 4 года назад +3

      Hey Kendra, sonography is fun but it's also hard! We learn how to take a lot of pictures, not just of babies! Look for a program in your area that offers diagnostic medical sonography, preferably one that is accredited through CAAHEP. both bachelor's and associates degrees are available and there's no real difference. Contact the school and see if there's someone to talk to about next steps ☺️

    Weird question but I’m very afraid of vomit (I’m emetaphobic) so have you ever had women throw up from morning sickness during an ultrasound? If so how often does it happen?

    • @DrTracyPapa
      @DrTracyPapa  3 года назад +2

      I hate throwing up, too. Not everyone experiences nausea and vomiting with pregnancy, but many of us do. Nausea only rarely happens during an ultrasound. During your exam, it's okay to:
      Ask to turn onto your side if you need to.
      Ask for a cold cloth for your neck or forehead.
      Take a break if you need to sit up for a few minutes.

      @@DrTracyPapa It is a degree!

    • @jaslautrup4742
      @jaslautrup4742 4 года назад +3

      Dr. Tracy Papa it is most definitely a degree. I am in PreDMS.. we have to do prerequisites first and then do a interview to get into the actual program... the program is 2 years but in total I receive my bachelor’s degree. You do take a exam, and it’s not over just one type of sonography. Our program has general so I take a exam based off of every single profession in sonography. You can specialize in one type and that is where you would take a exam over one specific type. But to answer your question, it is most definitely a degree. Hope that helps :)

    Pls, I'm a student sonographer after an OB procedure I observe the sonographer insists that the patient lie either on the left or right lateral side before rising off the couch. Any reason that is done??

    • @DrTracyPapa
      @DrTracyPapa  3 года назад

      It's easier to get up when you turn to your side and push up with your arm while lowering your legs. Turning to the side also helps increase venous return to the heart, so patients won't be dizzy when they sit up.

      I am currently enrolled working on my prerequisites for it. In total, it indeed takes 2 years depending on what semester you enroll in and how many classes you take in each. (Also, many schools only take a small number of students a year, so you may not get in on your first try)
      The range is about 60-80k. You'll have to check the average depending on what state you want to work in.
      All in all, it's definitely a great payoff considering how fast it is to get certified compared to a lot of other good paying jobs. Also a lot of job openings.
