It is a tax on people who give up residence in a country for tax reasons or give up their citizenship. Often this takes the form of a capital gains tax for unrealized gain attributable to the period in which the taxpayer has been a resident of the country in question. In most cases, expatriation tax is levied upon change of place of residence or habitual residence

Here is a tax question I have not seen any US Portugal tax expert answer. How does Portugal treat my Tax-differed and Tax-free account from the U.S. (Ira, 401k, Roth Ira)? Thank you
A friendly piece of advice to everyone: Remember to ask for a proper invoice with your NIF on it, even for purchases such as a couple of espressos with pastéis de nata. And regularly log onto your AT profile to validate those invoices. And why bother, you
It sounds like, when your NHR program expires after 10 years, your tax rate will double from 20% to 40%? The question Im trying to get at is, will the expiration of the 10 year abatement be so significant that you will consider leaving Portugal? I think

We are moving to Portugal: We have a small pension from USA and income from a few rental apartments, We are confused about the tax that we are going to need to pay here in the USA and in Portugal, Could you please explain it to us? Thank you so much.
Thank you for this information. I have a question - does the list of professionals eligible for the NHR also apply to pensioners (social security, 401k, IRAs etc), or only applies to the actively working professionals? Thanks
@@DerrenJoseph right! But is the their eligibility limited to being retired from the list of professions (published at the time) or can any pensioner apply. I assume the later but like to check. Thanks
I am self-employed and am the sole- owner of my own business with no employees, and I am single with no children or dependents, how would I report my individual income taxes in Portugal ?
Can you share Derren’s contact details? I already done the US taxes and need an accountant in Portugal that understands the process… Thank you in advance
19:32 Augusto is given an inaccurate narrative on pensions. ALL simple pensions from the US are liable to pay taxes in the US. As a matter of fact, as Americans we still have to file taxes in the US regardless of the origin of income.
Kind of. Its a bit more nuanced than this which is where inexperienced practitioners get confused. Without getting unnecessarily technical, Portugal won't recognize foreign tax credits from the US for the pension so we need to recharacterize the US pension as foreign and offset the Portugal taxes against any US liability. I'll leave it there. It's quite involved but that's what he was trying to say.
Thanks for your response. I am searching for a Tax lawyer who is an expert in Cryptocurrency rules and taxes in Portugal for someone moving there from Canada. There is mixed information and its difficult to filter best legal advise. If you know the best Tax lawyer with Crypto knowledge please let me know. Thanks again.
Thanks for your question. We appreciate you watching the video and providing feedback. At the moment there are no rules (yet) on cryptocurrency taxes in PT. So tax rules that already exist are applied or not applied. So technically no one can be an expert in crypto tax in PT because there is not yet any specific legislation (this will change in the not too distant future). As explained in this and other videos (everytime we do a livestream we get at least 1 question about it so feel free to do a search on the channel or website) the key thing is to understand whether you're classed as an investor or trader. At the time of writing, investors are not normally taxed under the NHR but traders would be. Feel free to reach out to Augusto for a paid consult if you're unsure of your status. Good luck

Under the NHR? IT may be taxable at the flat 20% assuming a sole proprietor....
in which other countries of the EU can this be applied?

How is Roth conversion treated by Portugal?
Saw this comment on another video. It's taxed but there should be no double tax once your team knows their job
