*This is the third in a six video series from a trip to New Mexico in September of 2022. Destinations include Aztec Ruins, Bisti Badlands (Alien Egg Hatchery), Valley of Dreams (Alien Throne), Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde and Ship Rock. It was a great trip and we saw some really cool stuff - Milky Way photography was one of our main objectives and we had success in all the locations we visited. Links to the other videos will appear in the end screen, or just hit my "New Mexico" playlist.*
I made it to Alien Throne a day late to photograph it in the foreground of the annular eclipse October 14, 2023. It is a good thing because I was told by people I met at the Throne on October 15th that there were dozens of photographers with the same idea and getting close to the Alien Throne was quite a challenge for many. People everywhere! When I was there, there probably were 10 to 15 photographers trying to get the sun bursting through the holes as the sun was setting. I was able to get an image with a starburst just to the left of the "king of hoodoos" as the sun set in the west. The angle of the throne at the time of the eclipse was not the best... so I did well shooting the eclipse at Bisti Badlands.
Yeah, I wondered about that - I had seen some comments about going to the Alien Throne for the eclipse. I was really surprised at the amount of people at the Bisti Badlands, but it was a great location - I think you made a good call. If you haven't seen it yet, here's my video of the eclipse from there - ruclips.net/video/ZLUySZM-26E/видео.htmlsi=Dp5w9ecFMqWiQRIs . Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@RonBurkett I was at Hoodoo City around the corner past the big petrified log. I just photographed the eclipse sequence there. It was spectacular, but not until it was over did I figure out how to photograph the eclipse with a foreground. During the ring ofvfire stage I should have checked where the edge of shadows were ear a tall hoodoo, line up my dead's shadow and hand held, quickly photograph the sun with the hoodoo. It worked after the eclipse using my cellphone. It didn't damage the phone sensor because I was quick.
@@septembertwenty-nine9989 We wanted to get some foreground photos also, but didn't take the time during annularity to mess with the settings to get a correct exposure.
Just camped there for the Labor Day weekend. Got some night shots out by the Three Wise men. Had wanted to do Alien throne but had equipment issues. Plan on going back! Agree about the roads to the trail head - don't try it in a low-sitting car! Even my raised SUV had trouble in spots. I ended up with a flat tire and put the spare on (right front) then had to rescue another guy in a Toyota Pickup who had TWO flats. Took him to Albuquerque and back to get his tires fixed (and mine)! What an adventure.
Wow!.. an adventure indeed! Yeah, tire damage was the thing I was most worried about, but thankfully didn't have any. Sorry you had trouble but glad you got to get out there and experience the area. Good on you for helping another traveler! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
@@RonBurkett It will be directly in line for the maximum eclipse. I hope to see you there, Ron.... A bonus will be several very dark nights before and after the eclipse for Milky Way opportunities!
@@jmfoty4280 You are right, m'friend! I may just have to scrounge up a companion or two and head west from Alabama to see this. We were closer last time and only had to go to Tennessee.
I am planning on going to the Alien Throne for the Oct’23 Solar Eclipse and some Astrophotography leading up to it. I’ll be staying at Farmington. Hope to see some of you all there as well
I'll post to my Facebook page. You guys need way more looks and comments. You're about my age and a great inspiration.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching and your kind comment.

Are you planning on photographing the annular eclipse October 14, 2023 in the Bisti Badlands/Valley of Dreams area?
Hello, I currently do not have plans to do that, but that is a very interesting idea 🤔- thanks for watching and commenting!

What kind of rocks were those that had that blue glow ?
❤❤❤
Well, I don't know specifically (not up on my Geology like I need to be) but different minerals may fluoresce with colors under UV light.
