The Thing!!!! What a film... that's my ALL TIME favourite Sci-Fi Horror. The remakes were pretty decent too, the way they carry over the story. Class 😇🕹️👌
I only played the US game, and it was a lot of fun. I really liked how you could shoot in one direction while moving in other directions. However, the UK game looks a lot deeper and more fascinating. One part of the US game which is pretty puzzling is the flame thrower sequence. For some strange reason, the aliens retreat if you "touch" them. It doesn't seem to make any sense, right? Well, it's because the basic gameplay is based on a previous Activision game - Stampede. In that 2600 game, you're trying to rope in cattle. If you "touch" them, they run ahead. That actually makes sense. The gameplay effect is an interesting juggling where you can't just use your weapon on everything right away.
You should definitely check out the UK version, it's very atmospheric however it's pretty much the same all the way through. The US version definitely had more variety, loved them both to be fair 😇🕹👌

@@williamgallop9425 Correct. I still remember this code from my childhood. I was playing this game together with my father and when we passed the first level, I had to go learn to prepare for the next day's school. After a few hours of learning, I came back and I was shouting: "Let us continue! 2727H" :-) My father said that I could at least learn that for sure. :-)

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Thanks for the reply - just found your channel and subscribed, enjoying your videos on the C64 - it's nice to go back to where I started gaming!
I'm in the US, so I had the US version. In fact, I didn't even know that there was a European version until years later. I played the US version a lot, and with a little luck, I could complete it without losing a single life. Some tips... Dropship - Always aim for the SECOND ring, not the one directly in front of you. If you only aim for the first ring, you'll often be out of position for the next one. Always aiming for the second ring keeps you lined up much better. APC Rescue - It really helps if you make a map (or look one up), so that you can figure out where your men are. Look for things like a four-way intersection, or two straight sections in a row to find your position on the map. If you can get two or more marines on the same screen, the aliens will never attack, and then you can buddy-walk them to the APC. The map is composed of normal sections where the aliens can only enter the screen from the normal entrances and the hive sections, where they can come through the walls. It's better to leave unattended marines in the normal section, preferably on a screen with only two entrances. The top two thirds of the maze are normal, and the bottom third is hive. The APC is located on the right of the map, right where the normal section meets the hive section. So if you're in the normal section, go down and right, and if you're in the hive, go up and right. When aliens attack, don't try to line up the shots, face in their direction, hold down the button and strafe back and forth. Control Room - The more aliens you kill, the faster they get, so hold off as long as possible before you start killing them. The aliens here can't hurt you, so don't be afraid to touch them. Doing so will cause them to back up. Even if it's a pair of aliens and the first one is behind you, if it hasn't gone off the screen yet, touching the second alien will cause them both to back up. Remember, be stingy with the use of the flame thrower and only kill them when you have no choice. Air Ducts - A map really helps here, but basically you have to be patient, backtrack a lot to avoid aliens, and have a bit of luck. Newt Rescue - Again, a map really helps, however in general, Newt is located near the bottom of the map, to the left of where of you start from. She's at the top of a sort of closed loop, so you need to go to the bottom of the map, then to the left a little, and then go up. To get back out once you have her, go back down, to the right, and then up. To get by the queen, you need to threaten the eggs on one side, and then run past her when she moves to that side. Alien Queen - Just use the arms to bash her repeatedly until her health is low, then retract one of the arms and move the extended arm away from her to sucker her in. When she tries to attack, quickly move the retracted arm back and extend it to grab her. This usually takes a few tries.
Always good to have helpful hints & tips for games and these will definitely come in useful for someone playing this for the first time. Thanks for sharing 😇🕹️👌
I prefer the UK version, it has a lot of atmosphere. You can pick up more ammo at the armoury, and rest troops in the medical bay to help them recover. The ultimate aim is to destroy the eggs in the queen's chamber and then get out. You can also use commands (3E,2S) to guide a marine and then switch to another character while that marine moves. Makes it very strategic. The US version has some excellent presentation (digitised images from the film) and the weapons identification screen is fun (inspired by Hacker). The dropship level is also very similar to the earlier Master of the Lamps in gameplay. The other mini-games are OK but not well-balanced. It's a massive multiload on tape but just about bearable on disk.
Wow that's a gamechanger right there Andrew, after all these years & years I didn't realise you could replenish both health or ammo... I'll be playing this again this week for sure. This will probably help many others trying this game for the 1st time also 😇🕹👌 legend
Superb playing it back with the actual map, as when I had it as a kid I'd just wander around aimlessly and then run out of bullets and succumb to the Xenomorphs. Atmospheric and superb game though 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer The Last Ninja was great also. Below the Root, Infodroid, Silent Service, Gunship, Airborne Rangers. Loved them all. The colors on my channel are Commodore colors.
The Last Ninja, Below The Root & Airborne Ranger have been covered on the channel - hopefully I'll round to those other ones mentioned at some stage - all great games by the way 😇🕹️👌
The Uk version absolutely. It was terrifying and thrilling even if it was horribly hard and unfair. The US version was just a collection of mini games based on movie scenes. Most were ok, but it wasn’t that exiting.
Thanks for a thorough look at both games. Which, surprisingly, are both good and completely different. Probably the UK game is a bit more "fitting" for the movie and more atmospheric. Never could get far in it. Force Seven may be the best (unofficial) Aliens game on the C64 though?
While the US version is more narratively following the movie, it's focusing mostly on the action and feels more like a typical game, not a horror game. Not a bad one, just one that doesn't really capture the essence of the Alien threat. The very thing that makes the movie great. The European version, while not necessarily narratively correct and super hard, instead focuses on immersion and suspense. The first person perspective helps here, as does the fact that having to switch between characters means you can never feel safe or in complete control of a situation. Has you on the edge all the time. It's such things that can make the difference between a decent game and a great game. So, yeah, I strongly prefer the European version being a horror lover. No, I never finished it, but I loved playing it for the thrills.
It was a confusing game especially without the map - I believe there is a cracked version which has a visual display of the map as you play. However, it's still very tough! I don't know anybody who has successfully completed this 😇🕹👌
I'm sure it used to crash periodically for me too... which sucked, as there was no save states for the Commodore 64 back in the day! We must have had miles more patience back then 😇🕹️👌
The movie sure scared the bejesus out of me as a kid when it came out, as I think I was 6 at the time! (But I still managed to sneakily watch it with my brother!) Good shout on the duct maze, one of my favourite things to do were map out games onto graph paper quite regularly - ahh the internet spoilt everything haha😇🕹️👌
I had the uk game which was very good at the time. A year or so later the US game was on a cover tape but I don't think I got past the dropship bit. Shame it looked good in mag screenshots.
I still don’t get why the electric dreams version was the cover tape on ACE magazine that one months. The whole game. And my whole family stayed up to ridiculous hours trying to beat the drop ship level turn for turn. My mum ended up beating it. To this day I can still beat the whole game in one sitting and still remember the ducts route my mum drew up for the second last mission
Tough game and it scared me as a kid. I never got very far but I have seen a version that had a map that would have made it much easier. Not sure if this was an updated version or maybe I missed this in the instruction manual.
Having played neither, I think the European one has an innovative concept even by today's standards. The American one let's you relive the entire movie again which is kinda boring and very 1980s.
They're both definitely worth playing, even to draw up a comparison after spending a little while on each - personally, the Euro version was my favourite as a kid, but years later after playing the US version - I realised that it was equally as good, but for different reasons 😇🕹👌
I waited ages to get the US version. I had the Electrc Dreams one and it scared the crap out of me, but the US Aliens one got a Crash Smash (I think ?) or Zzap Gold medal (?), so I was desperately after it and managed to get it via a mail order shop who imported it. Once I played it, I thought the sub-levels were terrible and I only played it once (except for the dropship part). I've got a copy of the ED (Electric Dream, not Erectile Dysfunction, ahem) here with me with the full map.
😄😄😄🤣 but yeah, the electric dreams version absolutely made me shite my trousers mate. I was only around 6 or 7 but man.... proper scary moments. Great memories though 😇🕹👌
Both were good in their own way, the US version was definitely more of an 'action' style and those wanted an atmospheric explorer/adventure style maze shooter, the UK version stood out. I love them both 😇🕹👌
the game is very good but the lack of a map you can bring up and see where you are, makes it almost impossible to complete. Yeah, I know- the map came with the game when you bought it...I didn't buy it ;)
You're right, without a map this was near impossible - probably why they made it so complicated to navigate. I think there is a cracked version with on-screen map available out there somewhere for download 😇🕹👌
American game is a joke - 6 minigames, each being lame and mundane arcadish stuff, boring and visually on the level of Atari 2600. Ugly visuals, that is. No brainer. UK game is one of the best concepts ever, many cool ideas involved, ingenious almost. Then again, not properly balanced, but core gameplay mechanics is awesome. That is the way games should be designed. We had no idea what we got back in 1987 - this was simply SPACE HULK, turn-based motion supported with keyboard (jump through more rooms at once), but real-time as well - team based, multi-character FPS with hectic shooting and moving all around! Nothing like it! Crucial question is - why we have never received more games done in this mold on C64!?? It's almost perfect, just needed some polish in next incarnations. That sadly never happened.
I had the electric dreams version on CPC6128, and it was soo scary to play, but had really funky music on the title screen, and pause screen, and I remember it had a tense piece of music in game too, to keep the atmosphere scary.
You're not the only one... when that loud sound came on when Aliens were near, my heart rate used to go through the roof! I'd absolutely 'pap my pants'.... still, good memories 😇🕹️👌
I was bored with this game, tbh But you had to pretend it was amazing cos of your mates. It was ‘game over man’ pretty soon to make way for typing in a game from Zzap64 magazine
I spent many hours typing in listings from magazines, only to find that the darned things would never work.. so i gave up on them. But! just mentioning it now makes me want to give a few of them a go after all these years... now am slightly more patient 😇🕹👌

No, I never finished it, but I loved playing it for the thrills.
I definitely prefer the European release... only because it was much more atmospheric and managed to scare the bejesus out of me as a kid 😇🕹👌
As a kid, the only thing i could figure out was turning the view and shooting. That's it.
It was a confusing game especially without the map - I believe there is a cracked version which has a visual display of the map as you play. However, it's still very tough! I don't know anybody who has successfully completed this 😇🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Well, now i know how the rest of the game looks like lol.
I had euro version played with my cousin had a serias bug where game would crash randomly
I'm sure it used to crash periodically for me too... which sucked, as there was no save states for the Commodore 64 back in the day! We must have had miles more patience back then 😇🕹️👌
Never played euro version looking forward watching new alien movie
Me too, I'll definitely be watching Romulus 😇🕹️👌
My friend and I played the crap out of this. We were too young to have seen the movie though. I had the duct maze drawn out and then memorized.
The movie sure scared the bejesus out of me as a kid when it came out, as I think I was 6 at the time! (But I still managed to sneakily watch it with my brother!) Good shout on the duct maze, one of my favourite things to do were map out games onto graph paper quite regularly - ahh the internet spoilt everything haha😇🕹️👌
i played Alien 3 on the Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive and/or Super Nintendo
I think I remember having Alien 3 for the Mega Drive - another great system 😇🕹👌
I had the uk game which was very good at the time. A year or so later the US game was on a cover tape but I don't think I got past the dropship bit. Shame it looked good in mag screenshots.
They certainly made that dropship level wayy too frustrating, I know many who struggled with the first part.... perseverance is key! 😇🕹️👌
Great memories, this is why I love the C64 - it holds so much nostalgia for many 😇🕹️👌
I LOVE C64 👍🥂🎩
Long live the C64 😇🕹👌
Tough game and it scared me as a kid. I never got very far but I have seen a version that had a map that would have made it much easier. Not sure if this was an updated version or maybe I missed this in the instruction manual.
Possibly an updated version - great game this, in fact both the USA & UK versions are awesome 😇🕹️👌
I played the euro version it had tension
Yeah, was even pretty scary back in the day... created a bit of tension when you're a kid 😇🕹️👌
Had to come here from GoodBadFlicks
Great channel 😇🕹️👌
I had both, European version did bore me as a kid, us version i never got through the piloting through the rings
I believe many struggled piloting the first part of the US version... it reminds me of the warping section from Dan Dare 3 a little 😇🕹👌
I waited ages to get the US version.
UK one is best, the US version was a snoozefest.
Yeah the European version definitely had more of an atmospheric vibe about it, was pretty eerie when I was a kid 😇🕹👌
Played both and was rubbish at both . Think the us release was better as more variety, even though I think I never got past second level
Yeah they definitely needed more games like this, loved the atmospheric feel of the European version of this game moreso 😇🕹👌
I had the electric dreams version on CPC6128, and it was soo scary to play, but had really funky music on the title screen, and pause screen, and I remember it had a tense piece of music in game too, to keep the atmosphere scary.
i couldnt play the uk version i was to scared
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I actually got one working for a few minutes before it crashed. Probably four hours of my life I could never get back. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. This was the 80’s and how lucky we were to live through this time.
Absolutely, the 80s were definitely the best and sometimes, especially with my music sense... am still stuck there 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I’m still hooked on the 80’s Demi Moore. Check out ‘The Midnight - Memories’ for the authentic experience. Omg, you took us there bro….. back to a place that will never be revisited.
