The reason the other youtuber suggested gasket compound
is that in a saltwater environment grease doesn't work as well
to seal and protect those threads. Over time the grease will just wash away

Getting the retaining ring off can be a nightmare under the best of circumstances, locking it in with gasket sealing compound seems counter intuitive to me. Besides, the service manual calls for grease.

I would love to but unfortunately I don't do outboard work for a living and I don't have access to one.

How come you didn’t put the bottom key in? Is it necessary?

I did put the key in, might have missed it or didn't catch it while filming

Man I haven't ever worked on a optimax lower and I recently purchased a 2008 Ranger Z520 and the Optimax lower seal one somehow came out and the second one is leaking! I managed to get them out and I ordered two new ones and I can not find a video on it and you didn't show that! LOL

Sorry about that! This started out with the intent of showing how to replace the seals. However, since I had to destroy the old bearing carrier to remove it I ordered a new one, which came with the seals installed!
