20% recidivism vs. 80% recidivism speaks volumes. In Norway, they realize that this pays off in the long term. I wouldn't be surprised if they spend less money on prisons per capita than the US does. In fact, it is better to rehabilitate a murderer in 15 years than to lock him up for life. First of all, every year in prison costs the taxpayer money. Second of all, if and when he gets out, he will be ready to work and pay taxes, providing the government with a stream of revenue. Third of all, give it some time and the prison population will be a fraction of what it currently is. Fourth of all, crime rates will go down significantly, as rehabilitated prisoners will have the means to support themselves WITHOUT resorting to crime. Unfortunately, many people in America are too primitive to understand this, all they care about is getting revenge at any cost.

I was an elementary school teacher and Officer in the Army Reserve on my way to my school and I was pulled over because the officer said I was “speeding”. He checked my license and found that it had been suspended due to an unpaid parking ticket. It didn’t matter that no one had notified me of my suspended license, I was immediately arrested and taken to jail. In that moment, all of my humanity was snatched away from me, and they began to treat me like an animal. One of the most humiliating experiences of my life. Even though I made a mistake, I was not a criminal and in no way was I going to hurt myself or others. After a day, I was able to pay my bail and on the next day, went back to teaching my elementary students. I felt like my whole experience of being treated like I was subhuman was completely unnecessary. That experience really opened my eyes. We really need to make some changes in our system.

There is a ton of support you can get from the government and although there is high tax, a bit of it goes to people who are unemployed or struggling financially. There are certain circumstances which messes people up and makes them homeless anyway, but then its easier to just go to the government for help than these prison buildings.

As a citizen of Norway I like how the system is here. Of course I would be mad if a person killed one of my loved one's and was treated like this. I would probably want him dead, not rehabilitated. But justice and revenge are two very different things. And rehabilitation can stop people from committing crimes again. And I have one thing to address. Yes, the maximum sentence you can get in Norway is 21 years. But if the government redeems you as still dangerous to the society, the sentence can be prolonged. The last death sentence in Norway was in 1948. Norway is strict on human rigths. No person has the right to decide to end someone elses life. However, he will almost certainly not be released to the public ever. 21 years preventative detention is considered equal to a life sentence by most Norwegians. Norway has a very low rate of violent crimes and Breiviks attack was the deadliest in Norway since 2nd World War.

He is also very isolated and cant have contact with other prisoners. These Tv shows don't tell you the bad things about going to prison in Norway. Like the shame they will carry for the rest of their life. Isolation is a greater punishment than most can imagine. 50% of prisoners in Norway are on Ssri drugs and many are on stronger sleep meds.

The thing is that you do not have to be homeless in Norway. We have a social law where you go to a private landlord and the municipality you live in will cover rent, electricity, TV and internet. You get about $ 900 per. months for food and other expenses. You have to apply for jobs - go to school to get long-term help. It's really easy to get a job. Hospitals and doctors are free

Nah, this is not reward, since outside of prison, things are proportionately better. In the US, law-abiding citizens doesn't have a proper access to healthcare and higher education. This is not the case with Norway, law-abiding citizens got all of these, thus, their prisons, even though comfortable by American standards, it's a hellhole in comparison to life outside prison.
Apart from psychopaths, most inmates could be helped and be rehabilitated in a good system like this one. I do some work with prisoners, and most are not bad people, they are often addicts, who have done bad things to feed their addiction, or have mental health problems that can be treated. There are some cases where you need to lock them up and throw away the key, but in my experience, that's a small minority. Yet they're all lumped together and treated the same.

Even Psychopaths and Sociopaths can change, but most need intense behavioral therapy which allows them to be less impulsive, and understand how their actions effect not only themselves but people around them. There's many psychopaths who have gone to therapy and come out as better people, ASPD is just a disorder like any other, if treated properly, it can improve, not be cured, but improved.

Norway is a tiny mono ethnic country of 5 million people. The US has over 327 million. Overhauling the system is literally impossible. What works in small communities can't always be replicated on a larger scale.

You obviously dont understand how the norwegian system works. The maximum sentence is 21 years, but it can get renewed. In this case, he will never get out of prison because he will get a new 21 years as soon as he is done.
Well, it's 21 years, not 20. :) AND that sentence will get added on since he will not be deemed safe to release, so he'll serve (most probably) the rest of his life in jail. In this system that you think is not ok, you'll find that the vast majority of the family of the victims are happy with the sentence. By the way, since Behring Breivik killed those 77 people, the laws in Norway are updated. The new maximum sentence for terrorism is now 30 years, for all other crimes it's still 21. In fact, it is better to rehabilitate a murderer in 15 years than to lock him up for life. First of all, every year in prison costs the taxpayer money. Second of all, if and when he gets out, he will be ready to work and pay taxes, providing the government with a stream of revenue. Third of all, give it some time and the prison population will be a fraction of what it currently is. Fourth of all, crime rates will go down significantly, as rehabilitated prisoners will have the means to support themselves WITHOUT resorting to crime. Unfortunately, many people in America are too primitive to understand this, all they care about is getting revenge at any cost.

I was an elementary school teacher and Officer in the Army Reserve on my way to my school and I was pulled over because the officer said I was “speeding”. He checked my license and found that it had been suspended due to an unpaid parking ticket. It didn’t matter that no one had notified me of my suspended license, I was immediately arrested and taken to jail. In that moment, all of my humanity was snatched away from me, and they began to treat me like an animal. One of the most humiliating experiences of my life. Even though I made a mistake, I was not a criminal and in no way was I going to hurt myself or others. After a day, I was able to pay my bail and on the next day, went back to teaching my elementary students. I felt like my whole experience of being treated like I was subhuman was completely unnecessary. That experience really opened my eyes. We really need to make some changes in our system.

JSSRocket i wouldnt say theres NO homeless people, but you do have to actively TRY to be homeless. There is a ton of support you can get from the government and although there is high tax, a bit of it goes to people who are unemployed or struggling financially. There are certain circumstances which messes people up and makes them homeless anyway, but then its easier to just go to the government for help than these prison buildings.

As a citizen of Norway I like how the system is here. Of course I would be mad if a person killed one of my loved one's and was treated like this. I would probably want him dead, not rehabilitated. But justice and revenge are two very different things. And rehabilitation can stop people from committing crimes again. And I have one thing to address. Yes, the maximum sentence you can get in Norway is 21 years. But if the government redeems you as still dangerous to the society, the sentence can be prolonged.
Edit 1: I need to add that it's weird that you guys keep comparing our prisons to how things are in America. You guys have a lot of problems in your country and to compare Norway and the US is absurd. It is weird to me even calling the US for a "first world country" as it does not feel like it.

Most Scandinavian countries and Finland have significantly lower crime rates and recidivism rates than the US thanks to an actual justice and rehabilitation systems combined with strong social welfare that reduces the incentive for crime.

That's an extremely narrow third-world way of looking at it, but true yes. I would rather move in with my parents and work as a garbageman every day than be in that prison. Life in that specific prison would still be a massive decrease in life quality for me and I assume you. You have to be in the physical location they tell you to be. There is no internet(except a few preapproved websites for job hunting close to the end of the sentence). The selection of entertainment is 0,01 % of what I'm used to. and so on.

Countries with humane prisons have good social services anyway, so people wouldn't commit crimes to live there since things are proportionately better for them outside of prison.

This tragedy is America's greatest prison paradox: to lock up and throw away the keys while also wanting and expecting their neighborhoods to be safe and crime-free once those released are back into their neighborhoods? @XBluex WolfX After Breiviks 21 years are done he will get another 21 years, and so on. He will never get out, and he is living in isolation and not in the luxury they show here. The last death sentence in Norway was in 1948. Norway is strict on human rigths. No person has the right to decide to end someone elses life. Everyone has the right to a home, food , education, etc. If the crime is big enough they might get a sentence like Breiviks.

However, he will almost certainly not be released to the public ever. 21 years preventative detention is considered equal to a life sentence by most Norwegians. @@abby-xw1yr Too many people got life in America who don't deserve it. Breivik will get "forvaring". That means he's never getting out. He is also very isolated and cant have contact with other prisoners. These Tv shows don't tell you the bad things about going to prison in Norway. Like the shame they will carry for the rest of their life. Isolation is a greater punishment than most can imagine. 50% of prisoners in Norway are on Ssri drugs and many are on stronger sleep meds.

I would rather move in with my parents and work as a garbageman every day than be in that prison. Life in that specific prison would still be a massive decrease in life quality for me and I assume you. You have to be in the physical location they tell you to be. There is no internet(except a few preapproved websites for job hunting close to the end of the sentence). The selection of entertainment is 0,01 % of what I'm used to.
The thing is that you do not have to be homeless in Norway. We have a social law where you go to a private landlord and the municipality you live in will cover rent, electricity, TV and internet. You get about $ 900 per. months for food and other expenses. You have to apply for jobs - go to school to get long-term help. It's really easy to get a job. Hospitals and doctors are free

Nah, this is not reward, since outside of prison, things are proportionately better. In the US, law-abiding citizens doesn't have a proper access to healthcare and higher education. This is not the case with Norway, law-abiding citizens got all of these, thus, their prisons, even though comfortable by American standards, it's a hellhole in comparison to life outside prison.

Apart from psychopaths, most inmates could be helped and be rehabilitated in a good system like this one. I do some work with prisoners, and most are not bad people, they are often addicts, who have done bad things to feed their addiction, or have mental health problems that can be treated. There are some cases where you need to lock them up and throw away the key, but in my experience, that's a small minority. Yet they're all lumped together and treated the same.

Even Psychopaths and Sociopaths can change, but most need intense behavioral therapy which allows them to be less impulsive, and understand how their actions effect not only themselves but people around them. There's many psychopaths who have gone to therapy and come out as better people, ASPD is just a disorder like any other, if treated properly, it can improve, not be cured, but improved.

Norway is a tiny mono ethnic country of 5 million people. The US has over 327 million. Overhauling the system is literally impossible. What works in small communities can't always be replicated on a larger scale.

You obviously dont understand how the norwegian system works. The maximum sentence is 21 years, but it can get renewed. In this case, he will never get out of prison because he will get a new 21 years as soon as he is done.
Well, it's 21 years, not 20. :) AND that sentence will get added on since he will not be deemed safe to release, so he'll serve (most probably) the rest of his life in jail. In this system that you think is not ok, you'll find that the vast majority of the family of the victims are happy with the sentence. It amazes me how hard core christian america is so into revenge and punishment, it's like american christians haven't understood the basic concept of the new testament at all. By the way, since Behring Breivik killed those 77 people, the laws in Norway are updated. The new maximum sentence for terrorism is now 30 years, for all other crimes it's still 21. As most of the population in Norway RIGHTFULLY thinks it should be.
