When this was first unveiled, I thought I was looking at something from another mecha series. While that certainly hasn't worn off, the kit is actually interesting. Excusing my melee bias, the novelty translates over to the HG Black Knight Squad Shi-ve.A, introducing a hardcore knight, paladin aesthetic into the Gunpla market. Though, with it employing the same standards as the SEED Freedom kits before it, it does suffer from some of the same issues, while having its version of the SEED Action System Frame downgraded slightly due to the completely new molding.

It's kinda surprising we don't have many knight-themed designs like this with the Gundam franchise.
G-Witch gave us the Grassley suits and now Seed Freedom is giving us the Black Knight Squad. It’s still uncommon, but if you like that aesthetic, it’s a beautiful time to be a Gundam fan.
If you like the knightly mecha aesthetic, Five Star Stories might be up your alley, look up Knight of gold and Batsh the Black Knight
Valkyria frames are like that if you're looking for some. They're all great!
It's surprisingly rare, isn't it? So much so that it's either SD material, or looking like something from another franchise when it does show up
@@mj2005gundam I blame M'Quve, the sleazeball tarnished the idea of knight themed MS by being the prolific pilot of the very first one to see action.
Fun Fact:
Cal-re.A, Evil counterpart of Strike Freedom
Shi-ve.A, Evil counterpart of Infinite Justice
Rud-ro.A, Evil counterpart of Destiny
Their names based on Garuda, Shiva, and Rudra from Hindu myth
Technically Cal-re.A is based on the transliteration of Garuda, Karura. But I never did notice that they were so similar to the main Gundams
I douno if I'd call the rundoa a counterpart to the destiny....
Its a nice elite nook unit though
The Okawara lineart doesn't do this kit justice because of his wonky proportions, this kit actually looks good. I'm expecting it, but the final boss also has Sleeves tier detail on it so it will likely be sticker hell as well.
I'm feeling fearful for the Rud-ro.A if this is the quality of the shared parts. I'm especially not looking forward to the Cal-re.A getting a kit knowing what we know of the HG SEED Freedom kits now
I think Cal-re.a will have parts separation akin to D-Hell's
Macross Delta called, they want their wind knights back.
Great review as always
They should contact the Cosmic Era in the next SRW game. I'm glad you liked the video
Nice halo reference with the gm spartan 🔥
Hehe, I'm glad you picked up on it. The sword design is screaming for it as well
Apparently, it is said that the Foundation's MS were based on the Strike Freedom, which it was rekted when piloted by Agnes' brother
Not much has been divulged in the manuals so far. Though with any luck, I might be able to catch the UK airings of SEED Freedom. If not, I'll just wait for streaming
I'm more interested in the Black Knights than any of the other SEED Freedom kits announced. We need more knight-themed mobile suits with kits.
To be honest, those are like the one time they tried to be creative post SEED Destiny. The others are just rehashes/variants of what already existed, if not more copies from the UC
Like the previous post comment, those chest mounted needles are actually really brilliant when you think about it, given that it is essentially the equivalent of the Full Bullet Zaku used by Johnny Ridden: 1 shot might not do much against the armor, but over 100 shots will either do more visible damage or drain the battery dry. Either way, it's a tactic I wish more suits would use even outside of seed for true armor piercing, though I'll never unsee a post comment labeling them as "Shiva's 8008 Missiles" I think it was GundamProduction
I mean heavy arms Gundam from Wing had chest missiles.
The problem is that putting it in the chest also means the propellant is very close to the pilot location and Powerplant of the MS. U asking for every less chances of surviving it ever.
@@gerogyzurkov2259 im honestly not sure if the needles explode but i think the anti-beam femtech armor could compensate
Though you’re right a direct hit will do some whopper damage
@@a.p.studios8713 They have to line the inside to protect against inside explosions not to mention add bulkheads to stop the interior blast.
I mean the Strike Freedom has a stomach cannon. Thanks to how God like Kira Yamato he doesn't worry about it too much.
Gundam Production/Savoryman first labelled them as oppai missiles, you're right. Though it just demonstrates the devastation of needle weapons. The needles don't explode, but the one volley that it has is enough to wear away at the batteries of any PS Armor unit, or even skewer them. A strong weapon that counters current norms, with a reasonable weakness, that's what makes it such a good and deadly weapon
I'd paint that with the metallic silver marker for that sword, ya know?
Having that sword in full chrome is a bit too much to me. Though, if you're gonna paint it anyway, why not in a red to depict its heated state?
@@mj2005gundam oh, right, but then it'll just match the handle.
@@pauljordan0203 You can paint it silver and then use some fluorescent red/orange paint above to depict it heated and have some glow under UV lights
Fascinating build and superb paint job as always!
Glad you liked it, thank you
Not gunna lie, I think that they look pretty damn cool @ 1:36 with the parts swapped with each other like that. I think I may know now just what kits I'll be buying next, if I can find them that is.
I don't know if it's because of the Okawara style or something, but they do mesh well together, whatever parts that fit that is
You know, I was initially iffy on these designs, but they are growing on me
They still don't look like they'd mix well with Gundam, but they're good designs in a vacuum
The red piece on the shield. Can it be removed and install another beam shield from other kits?
Beam shield effects are often custom made for their emitters, so it's a no.
Hey! A new video just dropped it looks like I opened RUclips at the right time!
What a coincidence
That red Goblin slayer eyes though 😅
It is menacing, that's why I like it
hope bandai made black knight squad rud-ro.a other variant..or just buy 4 black knight squad rud-ro.a and color paint it.
That's what I was talking about when I mentioned the madmen who'd get 4 Rud-ro.As just to paint them into the full squad
Ah yes, the red ranger of villains' sentai mech. Surprisingly for something name after God of destruction ot doesn't come with trishula, but the design is grown on me especially with that beam cape
I love the design and melee combat style, though half of me is still struggling to reconcile that this thing is from Gundam. I think they only took the names from Hindu mythology for the sake of it instead of trying to be fully faithful to it, so not having Shiva's iconic accessories is kinda expected.
Code gwass inspired designs here
I really wonder why Bandai wanted to overdesign the Seed Freedom suits. These HGs already feature a greater degree of color/parts separation than the vast majority of HGs, but it's clearly not enough for the lineart. I just built the Rising Freedom and enjoyed it quite a bit. It has more parts than the HGCE Infinite Justice, which already features one of the highest part counts for a regular HG, but it still wasn't enough to make it color-accurate (despite looking good as-is). While the transformation gimmick doesn't detract from the kit's stability, it also doesn't really add anything to the kit and implementing it probably bumped up the price a little. I do think it's among the best HGs in many objective metrics, but I just don't understand why Bandai would be so ambitious with their designs for so little return lol. There are some people (including some personal friends) who are more bothered by the idea of a kit being color-inaccurate regardless of how the kit is executed in practice.
For theatrics maybe? IDK. The HGs did everything they could in the aesthetics department, though you need RG levels of engineering to bring everything to life with plastic pieces. Let's not forget that these are closing in to being high-end HG kits for a standard MS. So to have the designers overembellish the designs, arguably to their detriment both visually and in engineering, it kinda drags the whole package down. Besides, they're 3/3 for inaccurate colors in the HG line
This would be less on Bandai's part and more on either director Mitsuo Fukuda who calls the shots on the designs, or designer Kunio Okawara who actually drew the designs.
@@mj2005gundam Regarding inaccurate plastic colors, I generally find that at least 2 among the lineart, box art, actual kit, the manual, and show will have minor contradictions in the shade(s) of color(s). I think the biggest offender is the original HGUC Rozen Zulu. One of my favorite HGs, the Adele from Gundam Age, is drastically different between the lineart and box art/kit, but I definitely prefer the turquoise they went with for the kit. I think most people don't mind as long as the colors still look good in plastic, which definitely wasn't the case for the Rozen Zulu lol.
Love These Power Rangers like Mobile Suits especially the Shiva and i can't wait to try the Gunpla when it's arrived in Indonesia few months later
Hope you enjoy it
Can't wait for your review of the other black knight members I prefer their design especially the blue one
The Rudra is literally identical across the squad minus colors, so I will not be buying them individually just for content's sake. I might get them for completion's sake in the future though, be it DIY or Bandai's actual release
@@mj2005gundam ah so you review 1 Rudra ya review them all only difference is color and accessories make sense still I looks forward to it I'm gonna get the blue one since it's my fave colorso long as it isn't premium
I'm normally iffy on the golden joints but here it complements the color palette really well
It really needed the accents or else it'd look way too dull
3:45 Wow, he's bigger than i expected.
Canon height: 19.27 metres. So it is a tall unit.
@@mj2005gundam Ballin, we need more tall baddies.
the gold runner looks so much better than previous HGs, its like RG level gold runner
It honestly looks like the gold used on the Typhoeus Gundam Chimera, so it's to each their own. I painted it anyway because of the feet emitters
I think I'll pick up the Rud-ro (just for preference of accessory)
The Rud-ro.A is more sensible in terms of weapons
nice halo reference there
Thank you, I'm glad you noticed
I’m waiting for the Cal-re.A
I'm so not looking forward to that if this one has such crucial issues already
Well.... Atleast he can be used as perfect antagonist for Justice knight and Livelance heaven.
🗿🗿🗿
That is fair enough
I think out of all the knights, I definitely prefer this one. I love the L-gaim reference with the slit eye, but I think I'm going with the Terminator eye. It just hits different.
In s good way.
Lol.
The Rudra looks less flashy, so I don't like that one as much. The Terminator eye just looks more menacing for this one though
*American Zyuranger theme plays*
Is that an epic Power Rangers theme tune?
@@mj2005gundam yes but i like to trigger people lmao
Ngl this suit looks pretty cool
It has the looks down I must admit, I like the mean knight aesthetic
Aw man, there were no Monty Python references. Missed opportunity
Although Rudra might give us another shot at it. Still buying it because it really is like nothing I've built (hasn't built the new Freedom and Justice)
Now that I actually get the reference, Rudra might be the better unit for them
Wow Nice kit
It sure is nice, until the quality issues hit it hard
I should do a custom color of the black knight squad shi-ve.a from every red rangers like power rangers mystic force
You really should. They're asking for it
nice spartan🔥🔥
The sword wrote the intro for me
An Actual Mecha-Shiva.
I actually don't know much about Shiva in terms of mythology, but the destruction this guy could cause is certainly up there
Man that anti armor blade is really similar to the energy sword from halo
I'm surprised there weren't more people who pointed that out
Shovel Knight
They do look similar...
I guess you can make up the lack of beam shield with F91 beam shield??? 🤷♂️
I don't think so, as the connections are completely different. Not for straight-builders anyway, since beam shields are tailor-made for their specific users
@@mj2005gundam Nothing is impossible in the landscape of kitbashing 😂🤣
For that price i was expecting less inaccurate color.
To be frank, they should've left it where the stickers weren't applied instead of trying to overly design it. The red though is a fair point.
I love Katars and this MS still my fave of all the Cosmic Era machines..
From a technical aspect, it is my favorite out of the SEED Freedom designs because it's so out there, and melee focused
I think the Sword is MADE for the Gm Spartan not for the Black Knight squad lmaoo
*halo theme intensifies*
Time to finish the fight
THEY PUT MASNFHER CHIFIEBT ON DE SODER!!!!
And now, with an appropriate weapon.
0:14 Halo, anyone…?
That's what the reference is, nice work picking that up
Ksatria pedang hitam
It is indeed
Even though it has a cool design i still can't get over the fact that it lost to justice because you accidently look into athrun browser history
I'm trying to understand the analogy, but I get what you mean. The power dynamic just shifted 180 towards the final 20 minutes of the movie or so
So sticker wise, it's more or less the same as the Rising Freedom.
You COULD apply them, but you loose little or nothing by leaving all but the head ones to one side.
P.S: Everyone keeps calling these guys Power Rangers/Super Sentai.
But to me... they kind of remind me of Mandalorians.
Yeah, the stickers make even less of an impact on this kit compared to the Rising Freedom. And now that you've mentioned they look like Mandos, I can't unsee it
@@mj2005gundam It's the helmets dude.
That T shaped visor is to iconic.
Hell, paint one for the beam blades dark gunmetal and you'd basically have the leader of Death Watch right here!
the design could look better if they toned down the edginess and not going too far with the viking/valkyrie aesthetic. those hanging pieces on the shoulder armors make no sense
They do get in the way of the shield, I won't lie
For such a strong and mean lookinv MS, it's sad to think how easily athrun defeated it and in a kinda goofy way
The 180 they pulled from pushing the protags over to being pushovers in a matter of seconds is still bewildering to me
Very cool design, although it doesn't exactly look like a Gundam design.
That's what makes it stand out to me.
Man seed freedom has been going 3 for 3 when it comes to suit yourself releases. And this one in particular is especially sad because it isn't based off of any existing kit, it is an original 1. Oh well at least you can build it as is without the stickers and if nothing else, it is the most unique out of these seed freedom kits. Also at least it gives you some free beam saber parts if you need them but man do the issues with the engineering hurts. Still a soild review on the power ranger villian suits!
If I have to be pedantic, it's 4 for 4 because of the RG Impulse Spec II. Though I can't argue that that kit shares all the merits of the standard one, so it's recommendable as well. Digression aside, the thing that really gets me about the Shi-ve.A is the quality issues, as had it not been for them, I'd recommend the kit, with the only issues being the somewhat restricted articulation. I don't get why, but the HG SEED Freedom kits have a handling over time issue, when few kits have failed to survive a review this badly before.
@@mj2005gundam Yeah I was about to mention the this is the new version of the impulse except it's in a different color scheme but it looks exactly the same as the original from a few years ago only now it has a different color scheme but I didn't want to bring that up because I had a feeling that would probably be the 4 for 4 even if that 1 is a real grade. But yeah it's really shocking that a lot of these seed freedom models all have the same problem of quality issue Uber time when we just got the witch from Mercury kits and those don't have that problem at all.
This mech design looks so overdone. Weapons and sabers everwhere.
It's actually quite sensible if you don't have all blades out. Suits both markets. Then again, when has SEED been sensible ever since the Infinite Justice and Strike Freedom?
