    From a New Yorker:
    - the neighbourhoods you are looking in are know for having the smallest apartments and older buildings. (Except Fidi)
    - you will get more for your money if you expand your search to midtown and the UES + UWS.
    - The subway is not scary at all and living in a place that is 20 mins away from the path train if you’re going to jersey and or downtown is completely worth it.
    - 3,000$ for 2 bedroom apartment in areas where a normal not new 1 bedroom is 2,500$ avg and having a washer/dryer is insane.

Someone’s not giving you good advice. The apartment is small because your budget is low - you’re looking in the most expensive neighborhoods in Manhattan, and old? west village? that’s the charm & that’s what it’s known for. Don’t look there if you don’t like old, and laundry? no big deal to go down the street, you can even drop it off and pick it up later, everything in Manhattan is pretty convenient.

Well laundry for me is hard because I actually have to go drive to go get laundry.

I don’t know why people don’t like doing laundry or walking to go do it. I love doing it because most of the time I have nothing to do so, doing laundry then going to get a cupcake or a cup of tea is so nice! Coming back home and watching a movie!! Ahhhhh, I love that!

Anyone in the comments, if you are looking to move here older buildings are actually a lot better! The big thing you should look for is a recently renovated apartment in an older building. A lot of the newer buildings suck and were cheaply built, I know from experience. Better to live in one that you know has stood for decades and they will usually have more charm and space :) but of course everyone has their preference! That’s just what I’ve learned

The buildings aren’t luxury so they don’t have names only a street number!

Temporary walls are so common but you do lose out on the common living space which is a downside (and no closet). Pre-covid it didn’t matter so much because you’d be out more than you would be home but with the pandemic... I love the areas you’re looking in tho. I live now on the UES but lived all over prior to getting married and having kids. Enjoy and good luck!
