FINALLY!!! I've only been waiting forever. How dare you have a life outside of giving me my Outlander reactions that I love. Just kidding. Glad you had a good time. Welcome back. ❤😁
The soldiers are considered on parole after that loss. They were not able to be returned home at that point with the ships needed for "war' needs. They essentially were' on their honor. ' In the book, William is frustrated with doing other jobs, still with the military, but not fighting. They were not allowed to carry weapons while on parole.
The one difference I did notice from the book, was that Claire had to amputate his ring finger (the damaged by Black Jack), which made his speech about the value of a man vs. the loss of his finger more moving.
The whole nature of injury is a lot more serious in the books. After Wentworth, the finger stuck out funny and couldn't bend because the joint was destroyed. Jamie told Claire it had broken again a couple times in the 30 or so years since then, so now that it's gone, (and it was removed by an experienced 20th century surgeon, rather than just a WW2 nurse), his hand is actually more functional than it's been in decades. But I get why they cut that. It would have eaten up a lot of budget to have to go in and constantly CGI Sam Heughan's hand to only have 4 fingers. It's the same with Roger's voice. Yes, in the books he managed to get it back well enough to speak, but it's raspy, he loses it if he gets at all over-exerted, and he can't shout or sing. It would be a bit taxing on Richard Rankin to make him continue to pretend to have a bad voice for the rest of the show, but it does mean that some of those poignant moments are lost where Roger hears someone else singing, and it fills him with envy and sorrow.
So for longtime i didn't even wanted to start watching season 7, but now i did it together with your reactions, and we still have to wait even longer for the rest. I think i read even until November maybe 😭
"I'm exhausted"... hahaha. So was I. Full episode. That battle through Jamie's eyes was SO stressful. but I loved every minute. Not sure if there is a point to Benedict Arnold's appearance, other than it was in the book and was significant to Claire herself (not sure if it will ever be significant to the audience, but the show could take that somewhere the book didn't).
Hey Anna! There you are! Thank you for sharing some pics from your travels with us. Most of the fans love this episode bc it contains many beloved book scenes, lots of Jamie and Claire, some comic relief and action. Especially the battle scenes are well done and have cinema quality. Fun fact: Sam and Caitriona confuse Benedict Arnold (who is mostly unknown outside the US) with the drink Arnold Palmer. This must have caused a lot of laughter on set. They still were giggling about it months later during promo: ruclips.net/video/NQcrjlmUVFI/видео.html
Mid-season finale. The other half of the season will air next year. I was just a little bit wrong in my prediction that the MacKenzie story-line would have the same cliffhanger as book 7. It is, but there is one more development from Jem's perspective that I suppose they decided to leave until the next episode. You do know there are always previews for the next episode AFTER the credits, right? Yes, they are in Scotland. For once, they had an uneventful trans-Atlantic journey (which is somewhat surprising, considering they were on an enemy HMS ship). I, too, am annoyed that they decided to keep the Bug-hunting-Rachel story. I honestly felt it was not that important in the book, and I know from interviews that Fergus and Marsali are not in either parts of season 7, and they had a really big story in the second half of the book 7 going into book 8, so I'm bummed that story was cut, but they kept the Bug story. As for this first part of the season, the biggest book-to-show difference is William's resemblance to Jamie. Book William is described as looking so much like his father that it's instantly apparent to anyone who has seen both of them. Obviously they weren't going to be able to find an actor that looks that much like Sam Heughan, so it somewhat changes all of William's interactions with his unknown family. When Ian found him in the swamp, Ian knew it was his cousin instantly, but in the show they had to have a bit of conversation for him to figure it out. When Claire was a prisoner, SHE was the one who recognized William, not the other way around, and just burst out "William Ransom?" without even thinking. THEN he recognized her. (Also, book-William did not know, at this point, that Mac and Jamie were the same person, but show-William does.) And when Jamie and Claire visited General Simon Fraser's deathbed, William was in the tent on the other side of the general with his head bowed. They didn't realize he was there until someone summoned Lieutenant Ellesmere out, at which point, Jamie was VERY careful to keep his head bowed the rest of the time he was in the camp, even when he handed William his hat. And then they ran out of there as fast as they could without drawing attention because Claire noticed that some of the officers and doctors were starting to notice that General Fraser's "kin" looked a lot more like the now Captain Ellesmere than like the General. There is a conversation in the books where Rachel says to Denny something like, "Isn't it weird how alike William and James Fraser look?" and Denny says something like, "I think it's none of our business." That conversation won't happen now, with the way the show is set up, so I guess they'll just find out from overhearing others' conversation about it or something.
@@hannaleppala9630 You can't trust imdb. The showrunner, Maril Davis, said at the premiere that Fergus and Marsali are not in season 7 at all, (and the actors are in other shows now) and they also cut out Dottie, so Denzell doesn't get his love story, either.
Can't trust your opinion about William looking like Jamie either, he DOES very much and it shows. And showrunners would NEVER LIE /s. Google Marc Guggenheim next, you're welcome. @@MeyaRoseGirl
I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Alba. Your thoughts about Jemmy are...insightful. 🤐 I don't want to spoil anything for you. Y'know, the louder Claire yells, the more likely Jamie is to be all right. So, yeah, he's going to be fine. I can't remember if we've told you that in the book, Jamie's left-handed and Jack, in his ignorance, destroyed Jamie's RIGHT hand. But, because of the bias against left-handed people, Jamie learned to write right-handed so the smashed up finger that never bent again after Wentworth made writing a bear for him. When he took the saber to the hand, Claire ended up amputating that non-functioning finger and, once he was healed, Jamie found he could write much, much easier so he was, oddly, grateful to lose that finger. And, as I learned on Google, people adapt very well to finger amputations, especially the way Claire did it, removing ALL the bones for the finger from the wrist up. The hand remolds itself and adapts. Weird, huh? Words I NEVER NEVER NEVER want used to describe me, "Injured rectum". Nope. I decline, thank you. Browning. That's a Browning quote and he hasn't even been BORN yet. Dang it, Claire. Stop polluting the time line. BTW, I didn't BREATHE during the 2nd battle because WIllie is there and I just...couldn't, even though I know what happens. That's OUR WILLIE, James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser! Mind where you're aiming that rifle! "You're not supposed to be the front-line man." You do remember who this is, aye? Willie's not under Burgoyne's command so he doesn't make the vow and stays in the colonies. And Jamie's going awa' over the sea so they won't face each other on the battlefield again. Whew. Alba, o mo h-Alba!
According to Geilis's writings and possibly brain damaged maundering, the size, quality and type of gem has a lot to do with how successfully you can function in that in-between space. A highest quality black diamond was supposedly the best of the best. Guess what the gem was that Jamie was saving for Claire to use to go home when he died? Guess what was the gem she threw out the window? LOL It has been revealed that the closing scene of this episode was actually filmed during season one, while they had the ship available. I've been looking to see if there are any differences that can be seen in makeup and such, since both actors are ten years older now and much in their real lives has changed. It looks like the makeup artists of a decade ago did a good job of predicting how they would be making them look in the future. Sam has changed more than Cait. Even after a baby she's still willow-thin and young in the face whereas Sam's face has lost its roundness. Those particular British soldiers and their officers are paroled on their honor not to rejoin in the war whether they make it back to England or not. Certainly, not all the officers are going to be as honor bound as others, but you'll remember what a stickler John Gray's brother was about it. He wouldn't shoot Jamie, even on a bloody battlefield where nobody would know, to repay a debt incurred by his brother. This is not the whole British army of course, just General Burgoyne's battalion, of which young William is now a newly minted Captain. But then, he's an Earl, his step father is a retired Colonel and his uncle is a Duke, one would assume promotions would come easily.
Not to get into spoilers, but William is still a Fraser, so even if he is honor-bound not to fight anymore, there are plenty of other ways to get into trouble. So Anna is definitely correct to be skeptical of Jamie and Claire's relief.
LOL! Too true. So far he's not been too severely troubled with Jamiie's curse of Murphy's Law (If something can go wrong it will) but now he starts getting it with a vengence. One could guess his father was not that stodgy old Earl. It had to be someone that fate messed with on a regular basis.
@@Blue-rl5dp Well, I would say, that Fate is pushing William toward his blood family, which is why he keeps running into them, and it has caused no shortage of problems for him, personally. While the main theme of book/season 7 is all the spooky coincidences bringing William back to his family, it's not exactly a new theme. There have always been a lot of spooky coincidences in the show (like how Jamie and Claire kept crossing paths with Frank's ancestors or the fact that Roger is a descendant of Dougal and Geillis) but there are actually A LOT more spooky coincidences in the books than there are in the show. So much so that Fate is practically a main character in and of itself.
Yeah, about the second half of Season 7 . . . . all the filming is done, but there is still final editing to do . . . . aaaand, that includes members of the writers' room, which is in LA, where the Writers Guild is on strike . . . . so STARZ recently changed the estimated time of release for the second half of S, 7 to winter of 2024. Sorry. 😪 Glad you had a good time in the UK. Did you get anywhere in Scotland besides Edinburgh?
I cried at the end while watching this episode. The gaelic music just melted my heart and I realised how much I've missed Scotland

A little addendum: the quote "but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?" is by Robert Browning. 🤓
