  • It’s often referred to as the House of 10,000 Ghosts. It has over 160 rooms, 40 bedrooms, and 13 bathrooms. It has stairs that lead to the ceiling, and doors that, when stepped through, will drop you a story or more. I’m talking about the Winchester Mystery House. And today I’m going to tell you the story of how it came to be.

Every time I read about the Winchester mansion, I'm struck by the contrast between Sarah's immense wealth and her misery. No amount of wealth can save you from the grief of loss.

Wow great video! I’m obsessed with the Winchester mansion and thought I knew everything about it. It was nice to hear some lesser know facts, especially about Sarah. New sub 😊

My grandmother, Ruth O'Hara, was in the SF Earthquake living on the third floor of an apartment building in SF on Greenwich Street when it struck. She had just turned 11 years old. After the shaking stopped, the building collapsed and they walked out of the window onto the street. They lived in refugee earthquake homes in Golden Gate Park for the next year. Some of those tiny houses still exist. She told me this story directly. RIP Grandma. I miss you.

I live only a few miles from this special place. I haven’t been there in nearly 3 decades, but remember doing a report in grade school about Sarah Winchester. This is a remarkable property. I thought I knew a lot about this place, but you touched on so many topics that I didn’t know about. Love this video!

I have driven by there so many times when going to SF from LA. I always tell everyone on the trip that we’re going there… non-negotiable. But once we get to San Jose, it’s, “We’ll go there on the way back.” On the way back, “We need to get home, we’ll go next time.” Every time. 😠 I’ve decided that I’m going to plan to visit there and we’ll go to SF only if there’s time. 😉 I’ve wanted to see it since I was a little girl. I love ghost stories and mysteries that are unexplainable. 😃

There was a movie in 2002 called Rose Red that I watched. It’s what sparked my interest in the Winchester Mansion. I remember thinking it was a great movie, but I haven’t watched it in years so I’m not sure if it’s aged well. 😅

@@ArmchairInvestigator I will have to check it out. I know what you mean by “aging well”. Some movies I loved in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s are a little lacking compared to CGI. 😅 There is one called Burnt Offerings. I would love if it was remade today.

My husband and I went in March a few years ago. I suggest you go in Jan/Feb. It was hot inside the house in March. The guide takes you in with 14 other ppl. The majority of the house is unfurnished. They did set up her bedroom and a few other rooms but most are empty. Also, she had arthritis so she had special stairs made so she wouldn't have to lift her feet as high. The stairs are small! Also, the shower she built in her home was also so she wouldn't have to lift her leg over the side of a tub. It's a great place but I wish the tour was longer and showed more of the rooms ;)

Whoever told her to keep building had a love one as a contractor who needed consistent work. They knew she had the money n wanted parts. I bet they still there at the house because of wht they did n can’t rest.

Interesting ~ how did her in-house help/ servants figure their way through the house? Or the person hired to clean it managed tho
I think she lived with the death of two of the most beloved people in her life and the lost and grief lead her to the house she eventually built. Of course if she has a confident to speak to about her grief I guess things might have be different. Or the house was her way of keeping out the pain of thinking of them.

This place is haunted I never believed in this type of stuff. Until the oak mirror! ok I went along with my classmates on a school trip to the Winchester house! I snapped a picture of the oak thinking nothing of it. I wish I had this pic I was about 15 years old I’m 42 now so I moved around and lost it so wish I had it to prove that the girl in the reflection is etched in my memory I couldn’t even look at this pic. It would freak me out !
Ok so the dead girl in the oak mirror rumors are legit! I am freaking out if ur looking to be haunted

    • @AtillatheFun

There is no mystery. The “paranormal” garbage was created by a couple who leased the home after Sarah died. The “door and stairs to nowhere” actually led to wings of the house that collapsed after an earthquake. She was old then, so she decided to board them up instead of rebuilding. Her legacy as a feminist icon has been destroyed by gullible people.
