Within a matter of seconds you take me from Bach to Durufle to the French National Anthem to Joy and bewilderment. WOW! Thanks... David. You've got a real live composer in you. Congratulations...... !!!

This is Baroque improvisation of a very high order indeed- not just Baroque pastiche but identifiably J.S Bach's style, something that very few improvisers really achieve. Each variation adopts a distinctive and consistent form of established Baroque variation technique. Just about everything is focussed and structured, with length perfectly judged for the content.
My only very slight qualifications would be that overall, the improvisation is perhaps just a little too hard driven. On a very few occasions the counterpoint loses its way a little amid textures that are maybe just a little too busy; for example from around 11'.00". Slightly slower tempi in some variations with more chance for phrases to breathe and provide more 'thinking time' would enhance both compositional and performance aspects of the music.
Nevertheless, the St Alban's 1st Prize winner of 2014 delivers something of real maturity and insight, and considerably beyond most Baroque pastiches; impeccable playing technique too. Excellent sound and visuals. Please let us have plenty more from David Cassan!
