Beet Sugar Factory
Built 1906 this property is listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of Interior
Listed January 20 1978
In 1903 Glendale founder , W.J. Murphy helped organize the Arizona Sugar Company to raise sugar beets for processing in a Glendale Factory. The factory was built between 1903 and 1906 the factory began processing sugar beet in 1906, but production ceased in 1913, in part, because territorial tax incentives stopped when Arizona became a state. In 1938 Squirt Company produced soda concentrate from grapefruit in a portion of the factory. In the early 1950's, the Showa-Shoya brewing company, owned by Tadano family, bottled soy sauce in part of the building. Phillip and Anna Ringer bought the factory in 1938, and their family still owns it today.
The factory has been vacant since 1986.

Back in 2012, I worked for the man who owned this building. He had plans to turn it into a brewery with walking tours and a ground-level bar. It was my job to start to get it ready for the preliminary work. I was in this building almost every day for 6mos, I had the run of the entire place. I had to backfill the holes around every column after the stability tests were done, I had to build a handrail for a dangerous flight of stairs, and replace one of the main doors.
And I have hundreds of pictures of the inside.

Was FINALLY able to get in there this morning. It needs to be brought back to life, such a beautiful piece of industrial architecture.

That is pretty cool. I remember playing in this building as a kid. I used to ride my bicycle into it. Awesome old building.
I grew up in the neighborhood across 51 ave from there lived on Lawrence Rd to be exact , this was around 88, we weren't brave enough to try entry.
I rode my bike in there also. Of course I lived in the area (on Krall St) in the early 70s through to like 1980. Ther was a huge pit out behind the plant on the edge of the barrio where they excavated the material to manufacture the brick that they constructed the building out of. This pit had all of this derelict heavy equipment down there and my brothers and myself would play down there. We were usually ambushed by a group of kids that lived in the projects a few blocks south of there, attacked with dirt clods. We called it "the dump." When I was a kid they manufacture the popular soft drink "Squirt" in the building. They would haul train cars full of grapefruit in and process them and they would repurpose the grapefruit peels by baking them converting them into fertilizer of some sort from what I understand. Each evening you could smell the distinctive aroma of these peels being burnt. It was a unique fragrance of bitter citrus that wasn't exactly unpleasant and brings back great memories of my childhood.
I explored this in the late 90's with friend... I made it all the way on top of the hight roof. It is a death trap in there with many places you can fall through the floor. I wish a had a camera back then. Thanks for this video, it is awsome.

I grew up around there as well. always thought this was a cool building
it would be even cooler building if they turned it into a drinking venue like they talked about a few year's ago.
For those of you that lived there in the 70s, you might remember me. I was the kid that got mowed down by a car while on my bicycle in the crosswalk at the intersection of 51st and Ocotillo in 1974. It broke both of my legs and I was wheelchair bound for a while. One year earlier a kid named Micheal Villes was killed by a car at that exact location. At the time there was a huge open canal that ran along the west side of 51st avenue from about 2 blocks south of Glendale to south of Maryland ave. It was dangerous. I remember cars running off into the canal. We used to fish for crawdads in the canal. It had huge cottonwood tree overhanging it and 51st was only 2 lanes with no sidewalks.

ahh I got arrested out here of once, out of the many times I got in there to see exactly what was in there. super insane place. in fact my profile picture is a headshot i took outside of the place for my acting reel!!

Southwest, I remember when it was El Rancho in the 70s. There was a store on the end called "Yellow Front," sort of a surplus store.
This building always creeped my mom out when she was a kid and she stayed away from it, when I was kid I had to pee on it because I couldn't hold it until I got home lmao.

Pratts Pets? When I was a kid there was a Pratts feed store there. They sold tack and feed (and baby chickens). I went in with my brothers as a kid once and took a cattle prod off of the wall, pushed a button and pressed it to my brothers belly. He screamed bloody murder. It was essentially a stun gun, I had no idea. All I knew is that it made a crackling noise when I pushed the button. That was about 54th and Glendale ave.

i don't think it is, its pretty locked down.
I'm thinking this building is still up because of all the Asbestos in it??
