    Nice job and great vid. I have a question at the end but let me explain this first. I am prep'ing a pad for a footing and crawl space w/ 3 foot stem wall. The 3 feet gives me more room under the house, but it's necessary for the slope of the land. 5 acres, and I have to deal with a 2 foot drop over 175 feet. We're in a frost area so I'm allowing for 2 foot cover over footing. The shop is 70 feet up-slope from the house, so I'm cutting the shop pad down to give the upper section a swale for drainage. Also, a very shallow v-shaped swale between house and shop that will allow gentle drainage to street DE (Drainage Easement)and also back of property DE. This will maximize property use. QUESTION---I am on sandy soil so I plan to dig the footing 3 feet wide down to hard pan, and back fill with road-base / rock @ 9% wet and do lifts until back to grade. The footing will sit on compressed footing. OK? Your thoughts?

    @jaquigreenlees 4 года назад

    Mike, When making a pad like this, or even digging a foundation, why go for absolutely level? If you have a slight slope from highest point to lowest point then the drainage for whatever structure going in has a much easier time getting water to exit the area. it only needs to be 1 to 1.5 degrees of slope for perfect water flow.
    The foundation itself can be set to give the perfect level for the structure, a bit more gravel at the low point of the sloped pad is easy enough.

    • @brockwagner939
      @brockwagner939 4 года назад

      Because eventually there will be a concrete slab on that pad, and you want the thickness of concrete to be consistent, because wasting concrete filling in a unlevel sub base gets expensive.

    • @sassafrasvalley1939
      @sassafrasvalley1939 4 года назад

      Jaqui- pole barns don’t have foundations. They may or may not have concrete pad floors. If you build the pad with slope, the portion that is outside the walls will bring water inside. You want it flat so you can elevate inside the walls and keep water out.

    • @jaquigreenlees
      @jaquigreenlees 4 года назад +1

      @@brockwagner939 You might have missed where I mentioned levelling for the foundation with gravel before the concrete.
      @Sassafras Valley True that they may be left with a dirt floor and I didn't think of that when posting my question. If the pole barn will be used to store edible produce it would not be a good idea to not have a slab poured, to help control pests like rats and mice.
