This is my favourite scene, both in the movie and in the book. Emma is always described as very vain and full of herself - and maybe in many aspects she is, being so immature. But here she reveals her selfless and affectionate heart: there are very few women that, in a social situation like this, wouldn't even feel a hint of envy seeing a gentleman that they admire and esteem pay such special attention to another woman (even if she is a friend). Instead this moment makes her evening, and she is happier for Harriet than if Kinghtley had invited Emma herself. In the novel it is more explicitly described (here not so much) how anxious she is and how she can't enjoy her evening knowing Harriet is sitting out and has been snubbed.
People do not understand Emma. She is frusturated. She CANNOT marry and leave her father. Her snobbery hides her frustration. George loves Emma and yells at her because he thinks she would be better off with a younger man. George dies not want to give up his independence. He is frusturated. He sees the fierce love Emma has for her father and he wants that for himself.
@@wednesdayschild3627 They both are so cute. I never liked man that so much older than me like more than 5 years older. However, Mr. Knightley and Emma made me want an older man like emma had her mr. Knightley, I want mine as well
It's probably because Emma knew that she was far better than Harriet and once Mr. Knightly had givem opinion about the young girl which assured Emma that he wouldl never ever marry the girl. Moreover, even if Emma felt special with Mr. Knighly, but the kind manner he has shown to Harriet even made him a more impressive gentleman!
@Get `em! Get `em! That's what her position. She thinks she's always right .She even thinks her level is higher than Mr. Elton. If it's not in reality, then it's in her mind that she thinks she is better than Harriet otherwise she wouldn't have told the girl of what to do and wha not to.
I like how they portrayed Mrs Weston pregnant. It gives the perfect explanation on why she wouldn´t dance, and it fits with the timeline of her child´s birth
Every time I read the book or watch any of the movies, this scene hits me hard. This when I realize Mr. Knightley is pure gold. Mr. Darcy would never do that...sorry not sorry, haha
I agree. Mr Knightley and Mr Tilney are the type of man who would come to the rescue of a poor maid in distress such as Harriet is here. Mr Darcy would never do that, especially before Elizabeth's refusal. He would remain in his corner watching and judging but not making any effort to help. I love these three above all others Austen's male characters, but Mr Knightley and Mr Tilney are my favourite ones.
@@MissLehane I think post Elizabeth Darcy would go help Harriet, like I can picture Lizzie dancing and giving him a look and nodding towards Harriet nearly in tears off by the side with no one to dance with. But yes Tilney and Knightly were already that kind of man before their relationships with our heroines😊
I was at Harriet's place too often. I want to cry, because there was never Mr. Knightley. Funnily enough, I am a very good dancer, though. Good that there was a real gentlemen for Miss Harriet.
I remember when I was at a bar with some friends. I sat there for two hours watching everyone. An older man came up to me, he said. I have watched you all evening. Nobody has asked you to dance. Well I think you are very pretty, so I am asking. I never saw him again. I think of him to this day more than 30 years later.
That why Mr knightley is my favorite! I watched the four lats Emma. I love the way Mark Strong's Knigthley show Elton is deseaprouve is attitude with Harriet. The arsh "excuse me" is so great. I love the way Jeremy Northam 's "saveHarriet" without fuss and I love how Johnny lee miller knightley is gentle and carefull with Harriet. Here the pure joy of Harriet face is perfect. But my I admit my favorite Emma/Knightley dance is from Emma 2009.
Man I really relate to how sad Harriet felt when MR Elton wouldn’t dance with her 😔 and I relate also to how happy she was when Mr Knightley asked her.
what makes it even more beautiful in the novel is that after that vulgar comment from Elton , we only know about Mr knightly proposal for Harriet when Emma actually sees them dancing and advancing towards her and that what gave me a great excitement and astonishment at the way Jane Austen made that scene to surprise us and yet make us feel the joy that both Emma and Harriet felt . So in this movie , they show us the moment he asked her (which is not in the novel) , and I prefer it in the novel tbh ..
It is not so much about her being left out, but about a deliberate insult from Mr Elton as he publicly slights her. By inviting Mrs Weston, but subsequently refusing Harriet, he makes it clear for anyone who could hear the exchange that he doesn’t want to dance with Harriet, specifically. And, on top of that, he knows that she was in love with him, so he is being not only deliberately mean, but also cruel.
I didn’t understand the frustration, until I started learning ballroom dance, and I have since experienced the frustration of not having dancing partners during a party, and the joy when someone asks you to dance. Truth is, we want to feel like we belong and be a part of the fun
It may not seem like such a big deal to us these days, but back then it was a huge insult to refuse to dance with someone, or to deliberately exclude them from dancing. It was extremely disrespectful and reflected badly on the excluder. That's why as well in Pride & Prejudice, Elizabeth takes it so to heart when Mr Darcy initially refuses to dance with her.
Can we please give some credit to 1. Callum Turner (kinda pround I finally remember his name, his performance couple years ago in "War and Peace" was so impressive to me that for a long time, whenever I saw his face, all that came to my mind was "Beautiful Anatol" or "Anatol Kuragin") and 2. that one grey haired dancing partner of Mrs. Elton, who's such a good dancer and bringing so much to the scene? Oh and of course the music. I want more of that kind of music. "Emma", btw., was the last movie I saw on cinema before Corona, and I couldn't have chosen better.
It's not medieval! "Emma" takes place in the early 19th century and is the original book by Jane Austen that "Clueless" was loosely based on. There have been many versions of "Emma"
Such lovely music and dance in the end! They all dance so elegantly and the women look so pretty! Does anyone know the name of that piece of music and how that dance is called??
Please, can anyone tell me the title of the music that is played when Harriet and Mr Knightley are dancing? I've searched the whole internet but didn't find it :((
0:13 Mr. Elton had been starring at Emma even here. lol the man really ended the most miserable of all bc he clearly still likes Emma, and he's stuck married to someone so unbearable.
For a while I was very nervous about parlor dancing, because I had gained the impression that asking someone to dance would automatically lead to marriage.
The expression of utter joy and relief on Harriet's face when she's rescued brings me to tears! Mia Goth played the part of Harriet perfectly!
She plays the role marvellously ❤🎉
Underrated moment: Augusta Elton'shoulder shimmy. It's such a small touch that shows how over the top she can be, but it's effective.
Her shoulder shimmy had me scream-laughing. She was REALLY feeling herself
I laughed so hard at that, and every scene she's in. She's hysterically awful.
Right?

Very few women can handle that? There are a lot more secure women out there than you presume! Geez.
The difference between a man with the status of a gentleman and a real gentleman.
Ar the c time gentleman meant landowner.

Protective George Knightley is the best. The BEST

At the beginning when Emma is dancing with Frank, Knightley in the background keeps on looking at Emma and being Churchill's hater lol

I doubt it happened to Jane....she was, after all, quite witty, nice looking, and I think would have been a desirable partner for anyone with an IQ!

It’s so sad how a woman’s feelings are based on whether or not they are invited to participate. But it would hurt anyone to be left out.
This is a special case, the man who refuses to dance with her, is the man she was in love with. He is deliberately cruel.

Well, it's based on a 200-year-old novel, so technically they're not remaking it, but making a new adaptation.
As many times as they want.
