Maps is a new browser-based tool that lets Dungeon Masters and players participate in tactical gameplay using maps in a shared play space on D&D Beyond.
Maps is an Alpha launch, which means it’s not finished: it will be buggy, features basic functionality, and may even crash at times as its user base grows! Our intention is to gather player feedback and continue to improve the tool with added functionality. We’re committed to consistent improvements.
Maps is included with the Master-tier subscription. Master Tier subscribers can launch and run a game on Maps for any registered D&D Beyond user. Dungeon Masters who would like to use the tool are encouraged to sign up for a 30-day free trial Master-tier subscription!

I run a drop-in D&D game, and this maps feature was the one thing I was missing. I am super happy with how it runs on mobile. This is awesome.
It works on mobile =o 😮😮
I can't wait to use this. It's the weakest part of my (relatively new) game. I have a board and I've tried cuts out and drawing, but I suck. Was gonna order a bunch of 3d pieces for it but this will be much better.
This is way more exciting than the 3D VTT. It's been since like May of last year since we got a dev update, so nice to see D&D Beyond dev update video again. 💚
3D VTT will be better and more evolved
@@jasonhardaway3052 I need fast and ready, if the 3D table takes time to load up for everybody loading it, compared to maps, that’s time we don’t have to play.
@@CharlesKhan very true, let’s hope it comes out properly ready
Oh please, the game session will be several hours, how will 20 seconds of loading make any difference (Baldur's Gate 3 for example right now). @@CharlesKhan
@@Ziplock9000 fumbling around ruins the vibe
Glad to finally get another dev update!
And a meaty one!
Sweet! This can quickly become the best VTT for alternating between physical and online play with the same character sheet.
I'm much more excited for this than the 3D VTT, which seems too cumbersome for my taste.
We're pumped for players to have more options on how and where they play!
I'm glad you keep emphasizing that to hopefully put an end to silly speculation that WotC could stop supporting play at the actual table.
Looks great so far! Been waiting for something like this for a long time!
We're excited for you to dig in! Use the link in the description to give us your feedback!
If the 2d VTT can have a large amount of the same tools like roll20, I'll gladly switch. Better to not have to re-purchase the same content on multiple platforms just for the maps. I think the three biggest features I'd be looking for would be a library of non-token assets for DMs to add to their own maps, dynamic lighting for tracking each character's vision, and an in-VTT initiative tracker for the DM.
Or use foundry which is a one time payment and save hundreds over the years
In-VTT initiative would be incredible. I utilize the Encounter Builder in my current campaign religiously. I have been playing around with this tool and its simplicity is something I love. Now, Roll20 has some amazing features (looking at you fireball blast radius) that I hope will be mimicked in some way here. Outside of that, this tool is great and is one that I plan to implement. Being able to run a game on my iPad is a major plus, too. My computer is rapidly aging out of the dynamic lighting’s requirements so running games is a bit cumbersome.
@@joshuarivero8014 while you are waiting on dndbyond's vtt to finish developing, i can recommend the Above Vtt browser extension. Idk how it runs on ipad but it does have an oprah extension, and it does everything that they are planning to implement on MAPS. Also it's free, so it's been great for me!
@@shotgun2010likewise Fantasy Grounds Unity
@@shotgun2010
The foundry license does not come with a license to use use official D&D content bought on DDB and automatically integrated with Foundry. There are ways to import DDB content anyways but that's not what the license bought and it's also true for Roll20 anyway which is free.
If you wanna sell people on Foundry (which you definitely can), you need to rely on something else.
This is FANTASTIC news! I've been hoping for something like this from the DnD Beyond team for so long! I can't wait to try it out!
Missing a lot of functionality that currently exists on my VTT of choice, but it's exciting to see this finally hitting alpha and the roadmap is promising. Dynamic lighting will hopefully get added to the roadmap after this leaves alpha.
Love it, the integration alone will be a huge advantage. We need us some dynamic lighting, but I think I could DM entire campaigns simply with this, and do it easier.
I actually prefer their fog of war approach as you can upload a random map and play on it straight away.
One issue with dynamic lighting is that it's extremely cumbersome to draw out all obstacles that block vision in a dedicated lightning layer (unless it's already done for you in an official published adventure). Another is that a player can easily lose focus if their token is placed in a way that they lack vision of what's going on.
I prefer to let all players see everything that the party explored so far and trust them not to meta game if their PC doesn't have Darkvision or similar.
I like how fog of war is something that the DM is in control of erasing manually when they want to reveal a new area of the map. Loving the adaptability of physical play where I can draw out any map on a gridded battle mat, this approach makes is easy to pull in a random map in the middle of a session and still use fog of war for an improvised encounter. As a (forgettable) player, it's helpful to be able to look back on the layout of previous rooms and corridors despite their token is no longer placed in there.
While Roll20‘s Dynamic Lighting is automated and allows differentiated vision based on positioning and Darkvision, a player can feel excluded if their token ends up in an alkove with blocked vision, such that they lack a visual of what the rest of the table are seeing and discussing. Dynamic Lighting can facilitate a grittier and more tactical playstyle if you purchase an adventure module where it's already set up, but it's extremely time-consuming to draw out all of the walls yourself in the Dynamic Lighting layer if you need to set up a map before the session for a homebrew campaign or a pre-written adventure module you don't own on Roll20. I did it for a couple of Adventurers League sessions during lockdown, but I'm never doing it again.
This is it! You don't need to make a 3D, heavy app that will roll well only on gamer's PCs. A simple, direct approach like Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds is enough! Let Larian and Baldur's Gate 3 deal with the more detailed, big and "chunky" VTTRPGs and give the players the options to decide which one of those is worthy of their money!
Quick tip to Hasbro, the actual owner of D&D: you screwed up big time since early this year. Stop listening the ideas from executives that never played the game and let real RPGs developers run the business! I garantee that the result will be very positve
why not both though. Let people play the way they like
@@vahn_of_the_art It will happen eventually, but people forget what DND and TRPGs were originally played. We can play with our minds, we don't need anything else. Any tool that is given to us is an amazing advancement for our community, but we don't need anything fancy. We just need something that will work, work consistently and something that be built upon. This is a good start.
Hopefully having a way to number or provide colored borders in monsters is in the works. If I’ve got an encounter with multiple monsters there needs to be a way to keep them all straight.
This is something i never expected, but something i and likely many others always wanted for D&D beyond. This is so awesome!
As someone that loves to draw maps time to time, i am very excited to use my very own campaign, i like how easy it looks drag in and drop out, absolutely loves the fog of war.
Great Job Team Beyond!
its gonna cost a pricey subscription, Hasbro and WoTC are in their Smaug arc
Compared to a costly subscription at any of the others sites that you can access for a VTT?
@@bwolos Owl bear Rodeo is free. and it's new site works fantastically. hell im paying only 4 bucks a month to get a little more upload storage. from 500 mb to 5 gb.
@bwolos you mean foundry vtt which is miles ahead already and a one time payment forever?
Super basic but there’s a lot to be said for simple and easy integration. Great job so far
I second this. This has been super fun to play around with.
Love it! I hope I will be able to drop Roll20 and move to DDB when the maps are fully functional.
I think the only missing stuff right now is a "ruler" tool so we can see spells more clearly on a map scale. Everything else is fantastic and I wanted it for so long now as a DM.
The ruler is on the roadmap, which you can find on the Maps Discovery page linked above! While you're there, hit us with any other thoughts you might have with the feedback portal!
Just go to roll20
Ohhh. It was about time... Well... now try to catch up on features :)
I have been using this for a while it was called above vtt.
Hope this means Dev Updates are back permanently. They were the catalyst that convinced me to subscribe to DND Beyond and it was annoying that they stopped being published post acquisition. These help subscribers know what we are getting and help connect us to the developers in a way that release notes don't.
I'm excited for this! I really hope a range finder can make it in some time soon. That's generally what I use owlbear rodeo for. That and spell sizes/shapes
The feature looks cool, but I feel there is so many other things that I hoped to be able to do on DnD Beyond, that are still not supported.
Homebrew is abandoned, encounter builder has not been developed, shared inventory has been abandoned.
As many people have said, it is not that difficult to use a number of free tools to replicate this option, I just hoped to have some things that other platforms cannot replicate.
ok, so then we just need discord for speech? I assume at some point DNDB will also have a voice channel or something.
Questions:
1) custom tokens? I'm assuming dnd beyond will only have tokens in maps for products you have purchased. Is there going to be a way to add custom tokens for homebrew monsters? If so, what is the point of pay walling token content?
2) map size/image size limit. Roll 20 puts rather annoying limits on map and image size. And strict limits on storage limits. Will dnd beyond have such limits?
3) will dnd beyond be adding other common vtt features like targeting?
4) will dnd beyond be expanding homebrew support if they aim to be a primary vtt?
5) will maps and the future 3d vtt have modding or scripting support for adding features the dev team hasn't?
There's a roadmap for our Alpha available on the Discovery page! Also the best place to give us feedback and find our FAQ, where answers to your homebrew questions can be found!
Homebrew monsters work.
The most important thing is that this works in the mobile app.
No one wants to have their 6+ friends having to bring a laptop and deal with power and charging all of that.
Make it integrated
The Alpha isn't currently supported on the app, but you can use it on mobile web on your phone!
@@DnDBeyond yes but the problem is all of the features appearing on dnd beyond and then not appearing on the mobile app (ie encounters)
There is a huge disparity between app and web, and when you’re at the table (or at least my table) half the players don’t even own a computer
as a new player using AbovedVTT this is literally the same thing but love it anyway
At 5:44, you mentioned VTT partners. Is there a location on the website where I can find a list of these partners?
ngl, im more hype for 2d maps over 3d. this will really help my play by post games.
I think more people would actually try this if you released the feature with the older campaigns than the new ones (that people have been avoiding for months). It's more likely that DMs are running Curse of Strahd right now than any of the new ones.
Maybe if you uploaded something like some concrete dungeons fully prepared to run, DMs would gather their players to try this. I'm not buying the new Phandelver book, but I might run Argynvostholt or Castle Ravenloft just to see how it works
It's great feedback, and stay tuned for additional supported content!
Wow, how is Elliot just an Associate PM? He absolutely killed it!
It's all in the mustache.
For real his "goblin" voice even made my GF laugh whi wasn't even watching. He seems like an Awesome DM.
Promote this man!
What happened to encounters? Last time I knew it was still in it's testing phase.
Looks pretty polished for the Alpha. I like the simplicity of the interface.
This is great. Now can we get support for all of Tasha’s like was promised pre-Covid?
Please, please, tell me you will add line of sight and lighting and integrating it from map builders like dungeon alchemist, that would be the best! And can we use the more realistic tokens that look like miniatures or do we have to use the little round picture tokens?
Amy, you are so pleasant! Love your presentation style. Groovy video!
It reminds me very much of Owlbear Studio 1.0.
If the Owlbear Rodeo couple managed to create 1.0 so quickly, I wouldn't be surprised if WoTC did something similar with more people. It's likely since OR let everyone use their code or whatever for free since the moved to 2.0
Finally, D&D Beyond is looking complete! I like the ease of use of this compared to some more technical VTT I have used. Integrating it all is going to be great.
Needs a lot of work, but this is the right direction to go, good job D&D Beyond.
This is similar to Apple rolling out the "new" features on their new phone that Android has been using for a decade. 😂
I have been using above vtt on dndbeyond and I am hoping this Maps addition to dndbeyond will be as much of a please to use as above vtt...
I bought Waterdeep Dragon Heist and Curse of Strahd. When would the maps from our classic campaigns be integrated? I'm excited to play but think that integrating the new books most people haven't bought is a bad move. Hopefully the most popular campaigns are updated asap so we can use what we've already spent money on!
Guys this update is really awesome, don't get me wrong here, I am extremely excited.
But what about the Generic Features system? It was supposed to be the next big thing on D&D Beyond and nothing happened :/ I was really excited for that
I appreciate what you guys are doing, but it's pretty lame that DMs have to pay more to run this game. We're already buying all the adventures and support, and putting all the work into setup, now we have a higher subscription price. Something will have to give somewhere.
Thanks for giving us feedback! Whether it's positive or negative, it's going to make the tool better! If you have a moment, use the Feedback portal on the Maps page so we get your thoughts recorded!
I like it so far, the personal dynamic tokens are interesting. I would love if the token database connected to your homebrew content too. We need an actual grid system implemented in some way and a measurement tool for sure. A way to implement custom tokens and images into the game would be great for spell casters and dm's. Incorporating the initiative tracker into the map program and having quick icons for discerning monster health and ac would be great for dm's too. A ping system or marking system for players to quickly visually communicate would go great with digital play where simultaneous verbal communication is limited. To handle to sudden influx of data you could charge higher subscription prices for more storage space like with apple or google drive. All in all the UI is amazing as always and I am eager to see the intended function after you guys finish. Good luck and please consider the needs of the player base!
If you follow through on the roadmap, this will be a HUGE plus for DMs. I really like the simplicity. Adding a few features like, not allowing players to move monster tokens, pointers, AOE markers, and pulling in monster stats on the tokens, etc., and it will be all I need to run remote campaigns!
I'll be trying out my new Shattered Obelisk campaign w/some friend's next week.
Today? I have been using d and d beyond's map feature for months.
Important question- who has ownership of maps DMs upload? Will DMs get to retain the rights to maps they create and upload or do they have to give up those rights as part of the process?
Your stuff is your stuff!
Does it link up to the encounter builder. Looks like it needs an initiative tracker.
The character sheet, Encounters, and Maps are all linked by the gamelog!
@@DnDBeyond for ease for the DM, the initiative order should be accessible on a separate panel/window. This should be orderable. Scrolling back through the charlong to check on the initiative order is very sub optimal.
OHHH NO TF THEY DIDNTTT!!!❤❤❤❤
While it looks cool, I dislike the fact that it is not free for the users that already own the adventures. In my view, at least those adventure-included maps should be free to use with this tool...
Yep I agree. I bought the adventure and now I have to buy the sub to do this? It's neat but I don't see a reason to drop foundry for this.
Make sure to use the link in the description to add your feedback! It's all super valuable!
Above vtt already did this and honestly I'm liking avtt more
Great. Now do homebrew classes. I can't use this as an integrated system if my player can't use a full homebrew class. In all seriousness though, this is the direction we have wanted you to go for a LONG time and props for doing it. I expect this will get more use than your 3D tabletop
I hope we get a decent macro system like in Roll20. In the games I'm in we use Roll20 for maps and DND beyond for sheets and it'd be so nice to have my stats available for macros.
I need a TLDR 5 min recap.
Maps! It's an Alpha release! Go screw around with it and give us your feedback! Links in the video description!
@@DnDBeyondyou rock! 🤣 Thanks for that!
This is the one thing we have needed for play by post adventure
Looks great. Honestly, many VTT's have far too many features. Sometimes you just need a map, tokens, fog. What I would like to see is a way to draw/make shapes on a map and the ability to add music I own and curate playlists. Music is incredibly important for my games.
Dev Update has been sorely missed.
This is very exciting!
I just want them to fix the damn app. You can’t select a manouver and don’t get a superiority die if you pick superior technique, and you also can’t create detailed custom items in the app infuriatingly. You have to go to the website version through the app to create a custom item, and even then many QoL features are missing as it’s not optimised for smartphones. I don’t care about new content, I just want the app to be fixed and good
This looks really slick
Nice!!
Bring back the weekly Dev Update!
Cant wait for this to be in alpha for as long and as useless as the encounters tool has been in beta
But I will keep a positive outlook. My 2 cents for feedback. Add the ability to connect player sheets, the encounters tab (so you can run initiative while in the map etc) Look to owl bear rodeo which is my personal favorite VTT.
Looks interesting, but I won't re-subscribe to the master tier until you offer content management for specific sources. Players kept selecting spells, sub-classes, options, etc from specific WotC adventures or campaign settings that were beyond the scope or theme of a campaign (e.g., warforged, Twilight Cleric, or Silvery Barbs), so I stopped using D&D Beyond for my campaign except as a reference.
What a wonderful surprise today!
omg I thought this would never happen ! (First ^ )
First in our hearts.
A step in the right direction. 10mg file size is disappointing though. I currently am a master tier subscriber who DMs an in person group and a digital group. I would love to cancel my Roll20 subscription.
Are we going to see a larger file size? Will there be an integration with Dungeon Alchemist?
Y'all have got to do as well or better than roll20.
Make your own hype, and don't mention that it's another step toward WoTC having sole control of the D&D concept. All they have to currently share is 5e. When they make something newer, it can be proprietary, and no one else will be allowed to use it.
It would be nice to know if buying D&D Beyond digital books will work with the 3d VTT that Wizards has mentioned. Until I know for sure I can't commit to D&D Beyond, also it will appeal to many people if they can use their own made 2d maps.
Glad to see another handy tool added to DnD Beyond. Releasing the 2D VTT is a smart bet, I'll have to try it out and see if it holds up next to Owlbear Rodeo
I am quite excited for this! Thank you for all that you do!
I can see both VTTs very much having a place. One for low powered computers, laptops and tablets (for the 2D version) and those with gaming PCs using the 3D one.
Does this have a play in house feature, where you can have one screen (laptop) has the dim view, and a second screen/window off the same laptop, that would have the player view? So I could do off the laptop, while using it to project the player view onto a tv?
That’s really cool, I don’t know if anyone else would like, but a damage bar or hp bar per token would be nice
I would love if the Maps and 3D VTT were part of one system, so I could quickly switch from maps to 3D VTT and back again!
I dl DnD Beyond on Android. I'm assuming this is a pc program? Honestly, it's like this question is so obvious that it hasn't been answered. Is it on mobile? Is it free on pc?
This is great. I have been doing D&D for years. Started playing in 1981. I became the DM for all the campaigns. To this day I still have people that are now in every corner of the United States asking me to find away for all of them play. I still have almost every module for AD&D 2 and 2.5. I also have moving boxes full of grid maps of buildings and a few towns. I will be looking into this later this year. The "Black Arrows", a seasoned group of adventurers may be back for a few more campaigns. ❤
So it's a buggy early version of Owlbear Rodeo, foundry, or Roll20 but it's only available by paying a subscription.
As opposed to Owlbear Rodeo, foundry, or Roll20, which are all free. Or the numerous higher quality VTTs that are just a one time payment to purchase.
.....
No. Yeah. Great work guys. Thanks.
Cool. It looks a lot like Above VTT.
Almost ready to pull the trigger on the whole DM role. Our long time DM and family member passed away in Jan of this year and he is greatly missed, he always wanted me to learn to DM so now I'm fulfilling his wish and I think D&D Beyond is the perfect place to start. Lots to learn but I'm enjoying the content so far. I hope I can make him proud. Thank you D&D Beyond in helping me hopefully becoming the DM that our friend/family member & DM said I could be.
Elliot is the shining star - crushed it all!!
Imagine trying to hype this up when you've got competition like Foundry, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and even Talespire. This is like the most bare bones VTT I've seen, and doesn't even have the full back catalogue of maps.
As painfully basic as this is in its current iteration this is absolutely going to be WOTC's best shot at getting people playing virtually on their platform. The 3d one is cool looking but really impractical.
Also the 2d one should be a lot faster and easier to develop. I hope that a good chunk of money is put into it because other platforms like Roll20 have been resting on their laurels too long and the basics of a smooth interface to move tokens and rulers around really isn't groundbreaking programming. R20 are putting out improvements these days but if all my players hadn't already learned how to work their site I'd probably go with an alternative.
Homestly i just want owlbear rodeo linked to dndbeyond. The player need to be able to click the dnd beyond buttons and roll on the owl bear rodeo copy. No clunky features. We just want a simple map and be able to add map & token. Do not make complex stuff around it.
Characters linked to the character sheet (like hp can be synced for example but odnt overdo it . Players play from character sheet amd watch battlemap/map.
You all are some of the most amazing people i have ever had the pleasure to know. What you've brought and are bringing to a game system i have loved for years could bring me to tears. I am a newer Dungeon master getting back into it and the way everything is connected I never imagined would be possible. I know you all have been through the wringer this last year, but I am so great full you have hung in there. You are still making a game I have long ago fallen in love with better and greater with all you do. I've been working on getting players together to enjoy and embrace a game system I believe is like no other. We all need that 1 thing, escape, reality break that helps us deal with the world in which we live. We have all watched tv, movies, read books where we go I would have done that, I would have changed this or that. With Dungeons an Dragons we can all do that. Make it what and how we want. So again sending this with Love thank you from my heart for making this game more then i could ever have hoped it to be.
Been a while since I've hosted, this is a long overdue resource and I welcome it. It may even be enough to renew my subscription when it's due. Providing of course that the higher-ups don't sabotage the community again.
Edit: I understand that you're trying to get everyone excited about the new features, but it's kind of like a pantomime during some sections of the video.
Can you please explain how I have a Master tier subscription yet can only access only 3 maps. Lost mine of Phandelver x2, and prisoner 13. Why cannot I access all available book I own that are in maps as of today?
Would love to see the adventure books we can buy be setup automatically to run on maps or something even more advanced than that. Can you imagine a really advanced A.I. program that can fully DM the adventures we buy!
I’m pretty heavily invested in r20 at this point, but the dnd beyond website and store are just laid out so much better. I literally have to go to dndb to figure out what books unlock what some times. If this map feature works on mobile and performs well I could see myself making the switch.
This seems to have a LONG way to go, even something as simple as snap to grid. Right now I can't see this even coming close to competing with something like Foundry or Roll20. The integration is nice, but not enough.
Encounter Builder still in beta and full of bugs and crashes. Why would I bother with this?
I hope you add dynamic lighting. (I know you are just starting development though.)
It looks good so far!
"Wait, they don't love you like I love you.." 😄
But now that we've all had our fun, that song came out in 2003. Have a nice day! ✌🏻
Fix the current issues within dndbeyond like spells in the ring of Spell storing, add epic boons and Supernatural gifts, make sure all class features and race features work properly before adding in stuff that's secondary.
So will this be in beta as long as the encounter builder?
@DnDBeyond When showing off a feature like the token scaling why not just use an actual map? Some random cat pic doesn't show off how scaling the token works.
You mention support of existing VTTs. Will WoTC be providing these maps to these other VTTs, if users continue to purchase adventure modules through their VTT of choice?
While this is still Alpha, maybe make it available to everyone for playtesting? Might wet some people's appetite for a Master Tier subscription and you're getting more playtesting out of your users
very nice to see a video from the dev team! please share more. even better = the alpha looks excellent, and hopefully the "master level subscription" will continue to be affordable
This is much cooler than a 3D "I wanna be a video game" VTT but I hope we can have a fog of war option to hide parts of the map that PCs haven't explored yet.
