I was only 8 so I don't remember seeing this on TV, but our family was a hockey family who never missed many Wings or Hawks games in Windsor/Vancouver. My dad's HVAC company used to sponsor the Detroit Red Wings in the 50s. But when we moved to Vancouver in 1959, dad became a HUGE Bobby Hull fan, and I followed suit. I STOPPED watching a few years ago bc I don't like watching Mama's Boys on skates, that throw tantrums when they get hit with a legal body check. Like my dad said in the 70s, "The American Dollar will destroy the NHL in Canada!" He was VERY accurate about that!
I just love watching this old footage!! Grew up with my whole family watching the Hawks. I still love Chicago Blackhawks. Thanks for uploading great memories!🏒
The game was also broadcast on WGN TV that night. I believe it was Joe Wilson doing the play by play with Lloyd Petit moving down below. After the game Lloyd was in the locker room. For some reason I did not have school the next morning and got to watch the post game again. I know the game was on a Sunday night.
L0L! That must have sucked, missing Hawks celebrations or games bc of school? I used to listen to Hawks Sunday night on my transistor radio under the covers in bed!
It was one of the few times in Stanley Cup history that the third and fourth place teams played in the Finals. Chicago finished third and upset the defending champions, the Canadiens, in an opening six game series winning the last two games by an identical 3-0 score. The Habs were going for a record sixth straight Cup. Detroit beat Toronto in five games. The most exciting game the Hawks actually played was game three against the Habs. With the series tied 1-1, they won 2-1 in triple O'T.
@blazingudd22 Us Ranger fans are very Happy for ALL OF YOU! We had a 54 year drought and had to endure "1940" chants from the Icelander fans. I went to the Ranger Parade on June 17,1994 and saw the cup. A thrill of a lifetime! Enjoy it ! you will have a great summer!
THE best player statistically (NHL/WHA) considering that Hull actually was the MOST fouled player ever! His stats are just short of Gretzkys, but #99 got a free pass (no hitting) from the NHL to 'sell' the game in Calif.and FLA., etc. to bring in more $hekel$ for the owners/NHL.
Hull was huge in this series as was Jim Pappin. Dryden made an unbelievable save on him,as Pappin had his arms up, thought he had scored!!! Hull made a great backcheck play on Frank Mahovlich in that game as well. Dryden didn't know where Hull's shots were going,he hit the post twice in the series as I recall
wrong game ... wrong date ... that was 1971 when Tony Oh oH LET IN THAT SHOT FROM THE SURFACE OF THE MOON to make it 2 - 1 and the Hawls as Henri Richard scored twice to win it ... ad the hawks died . Can anyone explain why this so talented team only won one Stanley Cup ? I was 11 years old , and a rabid Hawks fan . Sooooo much talent ..... soooooo little championships . They became a PUNCHLINE .
The Defense wasn't the strongest, solid, but Montreal and Toronto had veritable Iron curtains with more depth than the Hawks. Guys got traded away, and while they always had a solid defense, it was never the best. Glenn Hall could do a lot, but when facing teams with better defenses that could hold the Chicago offense at bay, it only happened once.
It really was a kind of special time in Chicago sports. The Go-Go White Sox a few years earlier ('59) won the AL pennant and although they didn't beat the Dodgers in the World Series, still had the town buzzing. A few years later ('63), the Bears would beat the NY Giants to win the then NFL Championship. Many forget that after the Blackhawks won this Stanley Cup, they went back to the finals the following season, but lost to Toronto who would win the first of three straight Stanley Cups..The Hawks would get back to the finals in '65 but lost to Montreal in a hard fought 7 game series..

I read Pilote's book a few years ago. I din know he was actually a very tough player, and why hardly anyone challenged him to fight? I also read that Matt Ravlich challenged John Ferguson in a game but Fergie chickened out! Matt apparently had a KNOCK-OUT punch. Too bad I lived in Canada and only saw a few Hawk games on TV back then.
What a winner Litzenberger was. Won four straight Stanley Cups with Chicago and Toronto, and then two Calder Cups with the Rochester Americans. Six straight hockey championships.
+Buick Le Sabre Somehow he played over 300 games straight with that specialty, just crazy. Definitely deserved his hall of fame entry with that and the three Norris trophies. And even though the Blackhawks don't have the best history, he still remains one of their best defensemen ever.

It's crazy to think: The Blackhawks won the cup in 1934, 1938, and 1961. By 2010 they had only won 3 Stanley Cups in their history as a franchise. Then, in 6 season, they win 3 cups: 2010, 2013, and 2015. Incredible. And now,, they're uhhh, well they have less pts. than the Phoenix Coyotes this season. 'Nuff said.
@@mr.blackhawk142 it was a helluva run tho. 3 Cups, Conn Smythe, Hart, Art Ross, greatest 🇺🇸 player ever. Lotta people saying he’s done, check that game last night - any contender would be lucky to have him.
First of all, the Hawks have won three Stanley Cups in 70 years. Don't know where you got that one from. It's just that their last one was 48 years ago. Secondly, the Wings' number one goalie at the time was Terry Sawchuck- one of the best ever to don the pads. And Hank Bassen- the guy who played in this game- was no slouch, either. And the Wings generally finished fourth out of the Original Six during that period- the last team to qualify for the playoffs.
@MWTCC The NHL returned to this type of format in 2003/2004. Now the reason the change was made in 70/71 was because it was found that white clothing got very dirty during travel and it was a problem than modern cleaning has solved!
1 cup since 1938, that's 70 years now. Because they won their first in 1933, that's 3 cups in 75 though (82 years overall, though 81 seasons thank you very much lock out).
@Love4SK The entire country watches College sports. Not just college kids. If I wanted to go into colleges only watched by college kids I would have added Chicago state, UIC, and more. As far as professional sports, well I'm not sure what sports Chicago doesn't have. We have every sport at nearly every level.
And, when the Hawks win the Cup, Lloyd Petit will be smokin' some big Cuban cigars with Harry, Vince, Irv and Jack, and Pat Foley and John Wiedeman will both scream "Hawks win the Stanley Cup!" on the radio.
I never missed a game between 2009-2017. Actually I missed ONE game Nov. 1, 2014 vs Toronto. (we lost). I had a broken leg from a motorcycle accident, and the bartender would not put that game on TV!
Also Chicago had a average record of 22,247 where toronto had 19,312. You can use the excuse of stadium capacity, but then I can use the excuse back that the only reason toronto sells out is cause they have a smaller arena. If we had the same size arena we would sell out every game as well.
Chicago Stadium attendance always read 16,666 bc that was the the Fire Marshal's limit! In reality there was about 20,000 or more PACKED in! There will NEVER be anything like the Madhouse!!!
@@mr.blackhawk142 I remember listening to my Canadiens playing Chicago Sunday nights ( we always played at home Sat. night) and hearing the big organ. That was a noisy place! Also, the distance between the blue lines was less than in most of the other arenas, encouraging a more crowded physical game. Now all NHL ice surfaces are the same size I believe.

Did you read my comment at all. I'm not talking about revenue, in fact I'm confused of where revenue even came into play here. I'm talking about attendences. If to say Toronto sells out so many games, maybe they should add more seats. I don't have a problem with you jumping into a conversation, but I suggest you go through the previous conversation. I think you may have misread it.
@stilleavy What...14 cups...before the expansion and suddenly they get some compitition and now they can't win at all. And the other majority of cups comes from your canadian football team which the league consists of 8 teams. Seems like as long as you have little compition you can win but as soon as more teams come in Toronto buckles under the pressure.

In the entire original 6 era, this is the ONLY team to win a cup that wasn't named the Maple Leafs, Canadiens or Red Wings. The NHL was so imbalanced during this time. The Rangers, Bruins and Blackhawks won a combined ONE Stanley Cup during this time period. That was this one right here. I guess karma is catching up though now especially to the Leafs, who are about to have the longest Cup drought in NHL history.

One period to go. Go Hawks!!!! I've been a fan since birth (1970). Growing up in Toledo, Ohio, there was no way I was going to be a Red Wings fan. Ha! Love those Blackhawks.
This was 18 years before I was born. I've been waiting a long time to see the Hawks win the cup. Hopefully it's gonna happen soon
Boy how things have changed huh?
what do you think now???? rocky is doin some good stuff! the kids can play!
I sure have not forgotten them.
awsome footage
AWEsome
I had to take this on too... What a canuck... as was already mentioned 6 nba titles, 2 superbowl trips, a world series and back to hockey dominance. By the way leafs fan, you guys look amazing this year...lmao Maybe you can hire someone off the street to play goal. Probably be better off...
Bygone beau-tiful eras.We will never see hockey played that way again.
. . . Congratulations Chicago Black Hawks , 2010 Stanley Cup Champions !
2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup Champions
Notice how Chicago scored when they were up 4-1 in the 3rd.
Your....POINT is?
It's crazy to think: The Blackhawks won the cup in 1934, 1938, and 1961. By 2010 they had only won 3 Stanley Cups in their history as a franchise. Then, in 6 season, they win 3 cups: 2010, 2013, and 2015. Incredible. And now,, they're uhhh, well they have less pts. than the Phoenix Coyotes this season. 'Nuff said.
back when there were only 6 teams. times sure have changed.
Yeah, Blackhawks 1961 & 2010....I hope for more cups.
Bing Chan 2013 and 2015
You got them 2013 and 2015
im shocked but ur rite rocky is doing everything they should have.
its awesome. im going wednesday thinking about a 88 jersey to purchase.
15 years later and Kane is on the trading block! L0L (Feb. 2023) Hawks are now IRRELEVANT.
@@mr.blackhawk142 it was a helluva run tho. 3 Cups, Conn Smythe, Hart, Art Ross, greatest 🇺🇸 player ever. Lotta people saying he’s done, check that game last night - any contender would be lucky to have him.
the hawks white jerseys were away jerseys in 61?
Yes Colors at home white on the road at the time
First of all, the Hawks have won three Stanley Cups in 70 years.
Make it three Cups in 70 years. Where did you get that?
Didn’t see much of Hull
Thank you Hawks! One Goal Accomplished!!!
Great Video.
That second Hawks' goal looked offside to me.
hawks were overdue and we got it tonight!!!!
@MWTCC The NHL returned to this type of format in 2003/2004.
Now the reason the change was made in 70/71 was because it was found that white clothing got very dirty during travel and it was a problem than modern cleaning has solved!
@brilliantmoon7 Especially the goalie!
1 cup since 1938, that's 70 years now. Because they won their first in 1933, that's 3 cups in 75 though (82 years overall, though 81 seasons thank you very much lock out).
4 Cups since 1938 ..... 1961, 2010,2013, 2015, RIP Van Winkle, you've been asleep too long
@Love4SK
The entire country watches College sports. Not just college kids. If I wanted to go into colleges only watched by college kids I would have added Chicago state, UIC, and more. As far as professional sports, well I'm not sure what sports Chicago doesn't have. We have every sport at nearly every level.
@polishboy364 You mean, 3-3 and the Hawks score the winner in OT!
And, when the Hawks win the Cup, Lloyd Petit will be smokin' some big Cuban cigars with Harry, Vince, Irv and Jack, and Pat Foley and John Wiedeman will both scream "Hawks win the Stanley Cup!" on the radio.
why did the 2 teams meet in finals? ...both western conference teams.
Only six teams back then. Only one division.
***** o thx
@AlecBoy006 You just got it, congrats Chicago from a red wings fan.
My parents always told me the story of this night that I was conceived the night the Hawks won the Cup😁😁
what a great team that was !!!!!!
stan mikita first european won stanley cup...he is from slovakia...born 1940 near liptovsky mikulas
STANLEY GUOTH was a far better two way player than HULL
Stan was the
I hope the draft this weekend may give the Hawks the answer.I hope so.
I think the Hawks will win in 2009. They've got all the right pieces.
I never missed a game between 2009-2017. Actually I missed ONE game Nov. 1, 2014 vs Toronto. (we lost). I had a broken leg from a motorcycle accident, and the bartender would not put that game on TV!
Here comes the Hawks, the Mighty Blackhawks !!!!
Only 'Mighty' in REGULAR season play...of course!
Damn the nets were huge back then as well as the rink.
Same size players were smaller and slower and no ads on the boards make them appear larger.
@@stevenpeltier4286 Nets were same height and width, but the base was in a figure three shape (that was changed after a player slid into the net and impaled himself on the pointy part) and the crease was different.
Too bad this clip didn't have locker-room interviews. It would have been interesting for Hawks fans to hear President Kennedy's congratulatory phone call to coach Rudy Pilous.
Do they now?
Do me now?
Blackhawk fans must of love beating the Red Wings in the Cup Finals
Did you read my comment at all. I'm not talking about revenue, in fact I'm confused of where revenue even came into play here. I'm talking about attendences. If to say Toronto sells out so many games, maybe they should add more seats. I don't have a problem with you jumping into a conversation, but I suggest you go through the previous conversation. I think you may have misread it.
@stilleavy What...14 cups...before the expansion and suddenly they get some compitition and now they can't win at all. And the other majority of cups comes from your canadian football team which the league consists of 8 teams. Seems like as long as you have little compition you can win but as soon as more teams come in Toronto buckles under the pressure.
if only they had the full game on video.
I agree...
Hawks deserve the cup after 50 seasons. Keep the cup in the USA.. Been our's since 1994. The Canadians can have their gold medals... we'll keep the cup in the USA!
And all on the road
Bill Hewitt is the play by play CBC announcer.
I may be wrong, but it sounds like Foster.
@@dcaru57 You maybe right, I watched many Leafs games in the 1970's and it sure sounds like Bill especially when he says "He shoots, he scores"! I only remember Foster from the 1972 Summit Series, not old enough to remember Foster's time!
Awesome hockey.
The drought is over. Add another feather to the logo.
That shot on goal doesn't count its Goaltender Interference on Blackhawks
better yet, if toronto has sold out so many games, maybe it would be smart to get a larger arena.
I thought Patrick Kane's goal in last year's Stanley Cup was equally as big as Reggie Fleming's in '61
NHL in 2010 =No Hit League.
Philly's toast. You had a good run, but your season, just like Nashville's, Vancouver's and San Jose's, is going to end tommorow.
Break away Chicago Blackhawks!!!
The hawks will do well....just wait a couple years. We have young players
good movie
In the entire original 6 era, this is the ONLY team to win a cup that wasn't named the Maple Leafs, Canadiens or Red Wings. The NHL was so imbalanced during this time. The Rangers, Bruins and Blackhawks won a combined ONE Stanley Cup during this time period. That was this one right here. I guess karma is catching up though now especially to the Leafs, who are about to have the longest Cup drought in NHL history.
Hawks sucked in the 50s and NYR/Bruins were always #5 and 6 in the 60s until Orr appeared on the scene.
