- A look at some of the special effects secrets from Peter Wright's magical production of The Nutcracker.

Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker score was commissioned by the director of the Russian Imperial Theatres, following the resounding success of Sleeping Beauty in 1890. Marius Petipa created the scenario - based on a fairytale by E. T. A. Hoffman - and Lev Ivanov provided the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It initially had a poor reception, but its combination of enchanting choreography and an unforgettable score have since made it one of the best-loved of all ballets.
In Peter Wright's classic production, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic - a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara is whisked to the Land of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky's score contains some of the best-known melodies in ballet, from the flurrying sounds of the Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the vigorous Russian Dance. Julia Trevelyan Oman's designs draw upon 19th-century images of Christmas, making this a classic production for the festive season.
the most under appreciated: orchestra
Thank you 😭😭😭
Ugh thank you
rosalina fire I can tell you as a dancer that we appreciate you IMMENSELY! Thank you for your dedication to your craft - we couldn’t do what we do without you!
I honestly have to agree...they do such a wonderful performance as well 😪
Yes we exist
This stresses me out just looking at it, remembering as a stagehand all the things that could go wrong backstage. I can't imagine shutting down the entire show because of the god damn Christmas tree.
They don't cancel the entire show when it gets stuck. They simply bring the curtain down, raise the tree fully behind manually and lift the curtain. It's only Clara on stage at that point anyway. The tree in this Peter Wright production is the very best you will every see in a nutcracker. It just gets bigger and bigger and is quite thrilling. They use to have a tree that went up in folds but the one you see now was added to the Peter Wright production when the Opera House re-opened after that huge extension, renovation and remodelling back stage after the Millenium and with the new flytower. The house can now house at least four productions on site without carting production sets out of Covent Garden to warehouses outside London. So you can Sleeping Beauty one night, swiftly followed by the opera La Boheme the next.
I am a student at a ballet school, and we perform the Nutcracker each year, this year is my second year as CLARA!!! Wish me luck
Good Luck!!! I know it's hard to perform in front of a HUGE audience. So I hope you do well!😊
Ballet For Life Good Luck!!!
Thank you both sooooo much!
Good luck
good luck
My dream is to dance with the Royal ballet in the Nutcracker, I am progressing slowly as I am currently performing with the English National ballet in the nutcracker, as a snowflake. Wish me luck?
Break a leg!
Amazing Pippa good luck!
Good luck and i wish i could i use to dance
merde honey ;)
I don't want to say break a leg, cause I don't want that to happen >n< But... Break a leg
Aim for the moon! 😇
Don't worry if you miss, you still land among the stars ^u^
At our company we have a sugar plum court where the angels would be, the beginning of the second act. We use dry ice to great "fog" or "mist". It is always so beautiful
Ballet Girl dry ice? That's so cool! I have never heard nothing like that in any company near us bc we don't do it every year.
Our company uses dry ice too...
We call them dream fairies. We have smoke/fog (it makes me cough like smoke), for battle scene, snow (lets us use less snowflakes, helps the dancers), and the soldier doll in party scene. I have no idea if it’s dry ice.
I hate dry ice because it makes for cold ankles, but it gives the effect.
Sometimes we only see the dancers on stage and hear the orchestra perform, but sometimes we forget the behind-the-scenes production team! Props to them for making every performance amazing! 👏👏👏👏
how do they not slip on those snowflakes!
notanotaku kun in our production they’re not super slippery actually - the fog is what will really take you down!
@@melissabrown2837 you don't really get fog in a theatre, as a techie you have smoke or haze , your more likes to get haze in this production over smoke as as the haze condenses it's very similar to water and if the theatre is cold it can make the floor really slippery
Danielle Rayfield I mean, it comes from a theatrical fog machine, so... 🤷🏼♀️
I was thinking that as well! It's no secret the tree "grows" because it's on a rising platform. I want to know if the snow is made or treated to be danced upon more safely!
Andrew MacLaine our production uses rice paper / rice gluten for snow. It dissolves if you happen to eat it, but we recycle it for every show, so I wouldn’t recommend it 😉
this is my most favorite rendition of Nutcracker. I saw it first time when I was a kid and I fell in love with it immediately!
I truly love your work. it never ceases to amaze me to the fullest. It's like a dream come to life.
I’m auditioning on Saturday. My teacher said I’m most likely to get in. Wish me luck
Julia Marie well hope u did well
Wendys how did you do?!
Wendys did you get in?
How did u go 😂❤️
UPDATE US OP
When I worked at my university's Opera theater, we did the snow the same way in our Nutcracker production. They don't mention it here, but we would always sweep the snow up during intermission and put it straight back in the bags, along with all the dust, hair, and glitter on the ground. It was disgusting.
makes you appreciate the "behind the scenes" just a little bit more lol
It must be so great to be a part of such a wonderful production!
Im going to see the Dutch version in december this year. It will be my first ballet. Im really looking forward to it.
So many people in the comments are performers, but yo where my techies at? Lighting here!
I got into the nutckracker I found out last week and I am preforming for the Carolina youth ballet
Oh god, ballet is so beautiful. And the Royal Ballet's the Nutcracker is truly my favourite. How I wish I could do it. I started ballet at six and would have kept it going if my family hadn't lost so much money.
That "snow" stresses me out cause wouldn't that be really easy for the dancers to slip on?
chrissyjoy08 yes
I have been in the nutcracker and the back stage tricks are honestly the coolest
This version of The Nutcracker has ALWAYS been my favorite. I have dvd of the one from when I was younger but would love to see this updated one, great job to all.🙂
I feel like this would be stressful as hell. But they make it work and it looks gorgeous
Brillant, beautiful, I love ballet, no words to express my emotion.
it's very interesting to see behind the scenes of what creates the magic on stage
Omg Bering the snow music reminded me when I danced it....and hearing my dancer scream “RUUUUUUNNNNNNN”
The Nutcracker was the first ballet I saw live on stage. It’ is simply breathtaking. That moment when the Christmas tree grows and everything else has shrunk....amazing. I cried watching the Nutcracker, just because it is so beautiful. So very beautiful with gorgeous music, very emotional. Even if you think ballet is not for you, I defy anyone not to love this. Thank you to Birmingham Royal Ballet for my first experience.
Sorry, but realistically, plenty of people don't love or even like this ballet production, not to mention people who just don't envoy ballet altogether.
Personally I can envoy the Nutcracker, but I would not say I love it. I much prefer more contemporary and stylised ballets, like those of Boris Eifman. My partner on the other hand just doesn't really like ballet.
That is amazing! In our theatre, we just use projections for effects.
How do they do the thing where the girl changes outfits really quickly while everyone else is hiding her
Al lot and lot and lot of practice
Coffee. Lot of coffee
@@gblikestosew yes and that
I want to be apart of any nutcracker so bad!! It doesnt matter where or what part I just want to do it!
Herr Drosselmeyer at the end,,, that touched🥰🤓
Did he say explosions ok that’s awesome
My dad works there and he told me about the tree and the defying gravity bit
I like that guys voice he’s so happy. I limey eh way he says scooter.
I love the Nutcracker!
For our growing tree it’s just one big piece of fabric with presents on the bottom to cover up the rest of the tree
Same here
For a few minutes I was mesmerised by that, great stuff!!
When I watched the "Special Features" of "Chicago" with Richard Gere, there was part of the commentary that described the difficulty that the dancers had during the song "IAll I Care About Is Love". The gold coins that fell were so slippery that the dancers were falling down and the scene had to be carefully edited. So, my question is: This is live theater and editing is out of the question, so how does the corps de ballet of Snowflakes keep from slipping and falling on the artificial snow?
One MercilessMing they watch their steps. Balance. Duh
Lily's Luaghing llamas--You must be one of the llamas. Apparently, you can't appreciate the problem of stage and movie props interfering with dancers' steps. But then, since snarking appears to be your only real talent, I'm not surprised at your supercilious comment.
I haven't danced in years, and I was never a snowflake with an actual snowfall, but I think that it's a combination of balance, being careful, and putting a bit of extra weight/pressure down whenever it seems like you'll slip. At least, that was my understanding. Pointe shoes are meant to be a bit slippery already, after all, so it's not too hard to attune yourself to just how slippery each step might be, like wearing normal shoes with poor traction.
Emma Elizabeth Davis--I made reference to the extra features on the "Chicago" DVD (with Richard Gere). The comment was made about the dancers falling on the slippery coins, which no one anticipated. Even WALKING requires balance (watch a baby who's learning to walk if you don't believe me), and walking on ice can be perilous, even with special shoes. I attended a ballet where the soloist took a header across the stage.
One MercilessMing oh shut up! Have you ever even danced in the nutcracker?!😡
I’ve been backstage and on stage, performing as the voices in the sugar plums fairies dance ( 3:40) I’d love to perform as a ballerina there, I’d love to do ballet again but ya know
I’m doing a nutcracker based show tomorrow for ballet 🙂
Maravillosa puesta en escena, Fabulosa.
At nutcracker we’re I live we do auditions to see who you play in the nutcracker last year I was a party girl auditions are coming up on October 15th I’m so excited I’m going to try to get Clara
I got Clara this year!

Hope you get it!
I was Clara last year
Bobi Smith so what?
Pacita Regenio just makeing a comment
Pacita Regenio she was just commenting no need to be rude
Alexa C. Thank you 🙏🏼 I am just proud of myself 👏
Bobi Smith no problem
I honestly wouldn’t be able to deal with the pressure
a little disappointed no one mentioned that view at 4:36
👀
As someone who’s flown onstage with a harness, it’s so scary the first time and painful. Your like 20 feet above the stage and your being swung around. You have no control and it’s a 180° wedgie. But you get use to it and then it’s alright.
"To the audience it looks like its growing." Nahhh... it looks like its being raised on a platform. Lmao.
Ikr 😂
Just wonderful
woa............ beautiful...................
wow i remember when i played fritz i had to wear a harness too i had to wear my dancebelt then the harness then my black footed tights over the top of the harness then the costume i wore it was amazing would love to do this again
gosh reminds me of when i did ballet we did a performance of the Nutcracker i played fritz and just like the young lad who plays fritz in this video i too had to wear a harness underneath my costume i had to wear a dancebelt and support cup underneath my costume before i put on the harness and when they hooked me up to the wire gosh it was funny i would of loved to have done this again
Being IN the nutcracker was super stressful with all of the costume changes and rehearsals
I NEED TO SEE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE BALLET!
I would love to be in ballet, but im not slim enough and my ankles are too weak to hold me en pointe....
I was in the Moscow Ballet version of the Russian Nutcracker.
I when to that show and the same year too
I like the show😄😄😄
What do they use for snowflakes that won’t be slippery under pointe shoes?
love it! ♥
fantástico! *-*
Donde puedo entrar a estudiar este tipo d trabajo m gustaría trabajar con ustedes
I am in the party scene and I signed a contract I would tell anyone the secrets
If there was any ballet company I could dance for it would be The Royal Opera House.
i spent half an hour after one concert shaking fake snow out of my violin 💀💀
