@swineninety9 thank you for the kind and motivating words.Candiria is an amazing band. It's good to see them still playing out east. Cheers!!! Thanks so much for posting this.
Ken SCHALk dude watching this shows how much heart you gave in your performances. Every time I saw yall play I always called you The Octopus cus it looks like you are flexing 8 arms behind the kit the way you rock and flow back there! Yall as Candiria were a body of musical fucking force, but you are and always will be the heart beating of the band. No album they can put out or produce at this point that will have the same heart. Keep pimpin out west my brotha
ken, you kick ass man. mind if i ask you a question? and sorry if youve answered this elsewhere on the internet, but anyway, if you have time, man, which drummers do you enjoy listening to most, especially in metal? two of my favorite are chris nail and gene hoglan. you manage to mix so many different styles together, i would love to hear who helped you learn to drum the way you do, or who has impressed you over the years. cheers, man. youre a monster. hope to hear from you if you have the time.

One day, I will tell my grandchildren about seeing Candiria live. This band is a gift to the world. Ken is such an inspiration to me. Thanks for posting this.
Ken was a major influence on me as a young metal drummer. I was lucky enough to open for Candiria with my band Osiva many times. I met Ken and became friendly and even had a 2 hour lesson with him. Great drummer, great man, great band!
Awesome! I really believe that he is in the top 10 most influential drummers in the entire genre. Just because he literally brought huge ideas to the table and gave people ideas how to transition into new parts in their music. Yeah. The guy is a friggin Beast.
I literally dont know where to begin when it.comes to the positive effect Ken Schalk has had on my growth, development and evolution for my first love, music. He and Candiria were so far ahead of their time and the curve. Ken Schalk was is pioneer in paving the way for polyrhythms in metal and extreme music. Im such a huge fan of so many musicians but Ken Schalk is at the front of the pack in a class by himself. Big up from Beantown!

Thank you for this. Starved for good Candiria videos, especially drummer POV. There used to be a few songs from a concert in St Louis, but that's gone now. Really glad you caught Constant Velocity
And he's one of the most humble dudes ive ever met!!! Ive heard the saying " dont ever meet your heros", but i gotta say, it made my life being able to talk shop with him in the back of the van in Springfield, Mass!!! I asked him why he had such a small drum kit and his answer changed my life... " Why add more drums when i haven't mastered the 4 drums i have now". Ken, i fuckin love ya, dude! No homo. :)
Yes he is. Favorite drummer i ever saw live. I would spend whole candira shows watching him.. except of course when Carley would fly into my path of vision or i was catching a boot to the face. Awe inspiring
This is amazing!!! Better late than never! Lol i had the honour of seeing Candiria a handful of times in Toronto in late 90s/early 2000s and Ken was nice enough to let me sit back there and watch him every time. Unfortunately, like you said, no cellphone cams back then and I didn't have a fancy camcorder lol
Wow. Crazy good. BIG ups to Mr. Schalk and Candiria. You've been a huge influence on me. Saw y'all way back somewhere between '00-'02. You are amazing live. Respect homie.
If u never got to hangout with kenny or see candiria live u missed out...i got many lessons from him and git the pleasure of playing a few skins matches at fresh meadow country club...he taught me how to play open and quite a few counting tricks for off time strikes and ghost notes...kens the only reason i miss living in new york
Yes! So excited this just came out of nowhere. Even going back to the 4 piece days, this was always my favorite spot to watch my favorites 718-ers. Ken was a show all by himself. Mesmerizing skill.
This is literally the video ive been telling anyone who asks who my favorite drummer is to watch....ken is the man, and his jazz style and tiny drum kit prove that he can hit harder than the most rediculously heavy bands
Oh yeah, and thank you for this upload, these guys have been my favorite band for like 20 years and this is such a cool view especially because of the emphasized drum sound, ✌
My brother and a friend saw Candiria in the 90s and they told me about this “jazz drummer playing hard core” (because I play the drums) and they told me he was the best drummer they’ve ever seen. I went out and bought Surealistic Madness and loved it. Kenneth became a huge influence on my drumming too. I didn’t ever get to see them play live, though.
i HATE the hyperbole of this video's title, but it is very hard to argue against those first 20 seconds!! heard of this band randomly in the mid 90s and they have held a solid place in my heart ever since
You were the first drummer I had ever seen live that blew my mind!. (2001) Nothings changed after all these years...i bought a cream color Tama superstar kick drum from eBay claimed to be yours! It has a rare candiria sticker on it I've never seen before from the temple of sickness era. It also has PLS written on it, I assume that stands for purple light studios. Could be a good con man, but I want you to know I bought that instantly! It is priceless as well as this video to me. Thanks for all your hard work Ken, still your biggest fan! -Todd
Thanks for all the kind words Todd. I truly appreciate it. Cheers!!! and that is definitely my kick drum. Does it have dark blue hoops? Should be an 80's Superstar kick 22 X 16" i bought my 2 superstar kicks in 1986 and 1987. bought 1 each summer saving up my work money.
My honor Sir for the chance to give you those kind words! That reply I just got from you felt like a reward from God himself, much to an undeserving man like myself! It sure does have dark navy blue hoops on it, and was listed as piano white, not cream colored like I had mentioned. (Im colorblind from working in a paint store 7 years lol) There were two for sale back in December when I purchased it, along with the 13" matching tom. I still have a way of getting ahold of that, however, it appears someone else has bought the other kick, as I looked for it a month ago because I wanted to grab that as well. I picked the one with the candiria and stoned fire stickers on it, as well as, of course, the Vic Firth sticker. I had only enough money at that time to get the one I picked, and I would be ashamed to mention at what price. To hear you saved two summers to get those about brought tears to my eyes. It was particularly frustrating and saddening to me that I was even able to get it in the first place, although I must admit, amazing!! It plays like a dream. I have never played on such a good quality drum before...it sure feels like it has a soul to it, at least that I choose to feel...With that said, as my soul belongs to God, that kick belongs to you, and I would be ashamed not to offer to get it back to your feet Sir should you want it! My email is toddnorton99@gmail.com If you wish for that. My love to you and all the guys from Candiria both past and present! I love that new album, all the music you created and will create...it gets me through the madness of life every time and helps me grow! There's No drummer I've found like you, and no band like Candiria to date! Thanks Ken!
dude your wonderful compliments are very humbling. as for the drums, please keep them and enjoy them. i'm glad you have them and will respect them. peace out my man.
Also bought a snare head of yours that you sold after what doesn't kill you came out and you resumed touring. Bought it at your show at the bomb shelter in NH. It's signed by all of candiria, and you had it for sale for only 30 bucks! Thought I was lucky to get that, if I really got one of your kick drums, holy shit! Haha. Hope to see more of your drumming soon.
It was at this time that all the drummers in the world realized their lacked potential and wept in shame for not having beaten their hi-hats as a woman of the night owed them money. Later they collected their understanding of the art once again and became thirsty. Long live the Ken. Long live the Candiria.
God Blessed this dude for real, Kind of makes me wonder whether God created Man first or Drums first 🤔 Or rather Drums for Man to bring glory to God.. 😂🤙
Can't believe I've never heard of this drummer or band before. I'm a huge sumeriancore kid, love Periphery, Veil of Maya, Born of Osiris, all of the weird, funky, heavy, groovy, technical riffs. This sound didn't get big until like 2010, so this being 2001 shows how ahead of the curve these guys were. That's nuts. 4-piece kit with the standard risecore cymbal setup, also way ahead of the curve. I know the math rock sound of Underoath, Dilinger Escape Plan, and Everytime I Die was catching on in this era, but that sound was more of a chaotic, disorienting wall of noise with more of a slammy, punchy feel. This here is the groovy, bouncy, more cohesive feel of the later sumeriancore trend, which is more about keeping a deep pocket than just pure technicality. And the whole band is tight, too. That vocalist has a really strong scream, which was way less common in 2001. I'm impressed. Also gotta appreciate that camera mic, being able to pick up the whole band like that without clipping at all.
I have him and Haake of Meshuggah. Those two guys are on a level above all others. Insane. No wonder none will ever come close to the styles these guys created. Even all the djent in the world could not hold Haake's discarded jockstrap, shit. Schalk is one of the greatest live drummers I have seen ,same for Haake. Those are my guys. legends. EDIT: I know I must be forgetting someone though. Chris Pennie was tremendous, and I have yet to think about some of the best DM guys out there. but Haake and Schalk are my GOATS
Ihave an old tape somewhere too they played sam goody store on w4th street before they closed down. I saw Candiria play so many times at coney island ballroom all over nyc. Nyhc days were golden
Divided is on my favorite jawns. I had got a tshirt from the band that was divided by the absurd trivia.. i guess they just shortened the title. I miss that shirt lol
Saw Candiria twice in a week back the same year Killswitch Engage started to break big - KsE blew up but Candiria was better in every single way and it's owed largely to Ken Schalk's incredible stick work. My dad, a more classic-minded drummer, had immense respect for what Schalk was doing even if he couldn't understand the rest of the music.
@swineninety9 thank you for the kind and motivating words.Candiria is an amazing band. It's good to see them still playing out east. Cheers!!! Thanks so much for posting this.

I hope that gets more eyes on Ken!

Agreed

Such a small kit only one tom? He kills it not sure how those heads survive a set
Simply. Fucking. Mesmerizing.
This is so inspiring
Thanks for sharing this man!
Stellar band
The intro and outro to Temple of Sickness can't be touched..
Never seen a drummer with so much follow-through
Didn't realise he shat himself during the gig
Ken is so good and so unique. Great drummer
At 17:21 it sounds like the old tone the NY subway trains used to make when to doors opened and closed. I wonder if this was intentional.
correct. that was an interlude from our 300 percent density album called "Mass" it has a recording of an active NYC subway station
This is some of the most bad ass shit I've ever seen and listened to.
I love this band.
Hell yeah!! Ken rules!!! Any aspect....

best drummer ever.
The GOAT
Yes.
Divided is on my favorite jawns. I had got a tshirt from the band that was divided by the absurd trivia.. i guess they just shortened the title. I miss that shirt lol
This dudes skill was far far above hard-core music. His drummingbwas powerful. But so mathematically progressive. Far ahead of his time
Danny is a great drummer from candiria too
Monster !!!
This dude is so fucking sick....
saw them at North 6 in BK back in the early 2000s
they didn't play 'Pages' and i got kicked in the gonads because of moshers. still an amazing show
Divided POV... bananas.
Genius
I think I was at this show, do you remember the name of the venue?
Fucking fuck yes! I put this on my big screen, got so amped I starting moshing with my cats and they fucked me up during Temple of Sickness
monster 💪

i WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM ND TRAVIS BARKER MAKE A TUNE ....FLAT OUT KILLER!
Ken would look at Travis & say "is that all you've got?"
nice
Pretty damn heavy.
agreed. the best
the first 15 seconds shits on 99% of drummers everywhere. any style
Bro what's the song at 1:44 this shit has got me drooling god damn that sounds amazing lol
300 Percent Density off the album with the same name.
fixing the kick petal during the set lol !!
