  • Tiger Woods and Ernie Els both eagled the 72nd hole on Sunday to force a playoff at the 2000 Mercedes Championship. Woods seized the victory with a 40-foot birdie putt at the second extra hole on the Plantation Course at Kapalua.
Tiger Woods' chase for Sam Snead's record of 82 PGA TOUR wins began at the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational, his first TOUR win in just his fifth professional start. Over 20 years later Woods' excellence has seen him raise a trophy in six countries and 16 different American states.

The year Ernie played some of the best golf ever. And still came second 4 times, 3 in Majors, to the inimitable Woods.

Ernie had a good year for sure, and everyone was basically playing for second to Tiger with how dominant he was, but I’d argue Phil had the better year. Granted it’s hard to actually compare how good a year was for anybody when you have Tiger win 9 times with 5 of them by 4+ strokes, win 3 majors, and finish in the top 10 in 17/20 events he played that year. But Phil had 4 wins to Ernie’s 1, had a slightly higher percentage of his finishes in both the top 25 and top 10 of the events he played, and in terms of final results edged Ernie except for runner ups (5 to 3) and missed cuts (0 to 2).
But I’d still argue he had a better year considering he had more wins and in 2/3 runner ups he was actually contending to win them while of the five times Ernie was second he never truly contended on Sunday outside of this playoff. He got within 2 of Vijay at the Masters when Vijay bogeyed 16 otherwise the closest he got in the other losses to Tiger was within four. Again, when you have Tiger playing like he did it’s hard to measure but for me it’s hard to argue against a guy who won more, contended in the runner ups and had a slightly higher percentage of top 10 and top 25 finishes. But that’s the crazy thing about timing and wondering how many more wins these guys would’ve had if they didn’t have to overlap their primes during Tigers era of dominance when you consider the immense success they had anyways.

@Pga Tour The annoucer is incorrect at 44:35 when he said Tiger won the career grand at 25 years of age. He was 24 at the time! Please correct this for the sake of accurate preservation of Tiger's historic accomplisments. Thanks.

I watched this at Nevada Bobs in Montclair California. I can remember this like it was yesterday ... the greatest era of golf.

Curtis Strange was wrong. What Tiger was doing around this time was much harder than what Hogan and Nelson did. The fields had become much better and deeper by this time.

Curtis was easily one of the biggest Tiger haters in golf. His commentary was ridiculous, starting with that very first interview.

    Tiger: Yeah, OK!

Unmakeable putts just aren't a thing. Golf dudes just like to aggrandize the sport as if it's impossible to play.

Tiger Woods won at St Andrews at 24 years of age in 2000, not 25. He was 29 when he won in 2005.
