    I was born in 1951 and I thought it was a great time to grow up. We played out until dark. Never worried about walking to the library , park, to the DQ, or to the local candy store hang out. Also to the pool or the pool hall. I have a cook book that looks like yours. the cover falling off and all. I also have hand written recipes, and every time I see my g'ma or mama's handwriting I tear up. I'm 72 and my son, who is a great cook, has already called dibs on the cookbook. I love watching your channel, but I will say today's show had me teary eyed, but that is not a bad thing! To remember loved ones is the best! Thank you for this special show!

      1951 here too. Idyllic childhood. Homemade supper every single night. Mom was a fabulous cook and baker.
      We were outside from after breakfast til the streetlights came on. No limits on our radius. We'd spend a nickel to ride the bus downtown, then get on the ferry and ride it over to downtown Davenport, Iowa. Just us little girls. No fear. Ride bikes all day, down to the river (Mississippi), catch frogs. We caught grasshoppers on the way to school and lightning bugs at night. Kick ball, badminton, county fair and circus. It was a good time to be a kid. ❤

      Ditto, born 1951. We respected our elders, and feared our parents. I can remember getting whacked with the wooden spoon on many occasions 😅.

    I was born in 1959. I grew up with 1 sister and 8 brothers. I was right in the middle. When I was growing up the world was so different back then. We slept with our doors unlocked, we played outside all day long and came home before dark. We played with all the kids on our block. There was no PlayStation, internet, cell phones. We had tree houses, we roller skated, hoola hooped, played jacks, freeze tag, ride bikes, etc. it was a great childhood.

      I was born in 1943 and I remember the 50’s recipes has been delicious and still use a lot this day. The original mac & cheese started in 1769 in England.

    I was born 1941. GREATEST time ever to grow up ! We had chicken a la king a lot. My mom always served it over toast. I am 83 years old now and serve it to my children with pride and sweet memories. THANK YOU for remember the greatest ERA. God Bless, M.A. Bennett

      @abuela071807. I made chicken a La king quite a bit when my kids were little. I also used the recipe as a guideline & I made tuna a La king. Surprisingly the kids & my husband liked it pretty well.

    1952, Georgia. Three months off for summer!! We'd get on our bikes after breakfast & not come back til daddy whistled from the front porch for supper. Mom did 3 meals a day, kept the house immaculate, best seamstress ever. Can't wait to see her, dad & brothers in heaven. My childhood rocked!! Feel kinda sorry for kids today 😢.

      Sounds just like when I grew up. With 8 kids my mom had her hands full but like you our house was immaculate. and my mom made our clothes. We wore them proudly. 1952 Texas

      ​@@frankiewillis1772School buddies always wanted mom to make clothes for them but she only sewed for family & her close friends, so I was always wearing an "original"😂. Even when we went shopping, could never find anything as pretty or as well made.

      Right? Born 1959. Mom would shoo us out of the house on weekends and summer vacation. "Get out from underfoot, I don't want to see you till lunchtime." We'd go exploring on our bikes. If we didn't come home for dinner, she assumed (rightly) that we were at a friend's for dinner. (That's how she grew up in the 1930's, so many cousins in her city that HER mom didn't worry if she wasn't at the table.) In the evening after supper we didn't have to come home till the streetlights came on. I'm SO grateful that my childhood was like that.

    I was born in 1952. So grateful to have grown up in the 50's! Mom's stayed home, took care of the kids & cooked delicious dinners from scratch! Those were the days!

      @jjones4314, I read your comment and I thought how you were so very lucky you to have your Mom there, for you everyday. I am one year older than you and my memories are very different than yours. You see, my Mom had to work outside of our home to make ends meet. We too had wonderful summers just doing kid stuff during the sixties. But, I also had to help my Mom around the house and I learned to cook, early on, in order to have dinner done when Mom got home from work, so our Mom was not home when we got home from school. Since I didn’t know anything different, I thought I was lucky to spend more time with our Dad, who was often home because he worked shift work. He is the one who taught me to cook and I loved that part of my day! I spent a lot of quality time with my Dad and learned a lot about groceries and grocery shopping, to fit our budget. I felt very lucky to have had such quality time with my Dad! Our Dad “took care” of us kids. Most of the time, we were doing homework around the dinning room table. My memories are mixed with fun and getting to do things that our Mom would not have thought of! Like how to catch that old Bass 🎣, and short trips to show us kids where our Dad grew up! Dad introdused us to swimming in the old creek, while the watermelon that Dad showed us how to select, was being chilled in that creek! Then we would eat the chilled watermelon there at the creek, and listen to Dad talk about growing up playing in that creek and often catching enough Bass fish that we would bring the fish home and, that was where and when I learned to fry fish, hush puppies, and shrimp, when we were lucky to get fried fish and shrimp for dinner. And, Yes, I learned to fry the most mouthwatering fish and fries. Those were the days for us! My memories were filled with learning to cook and spending lots of fun time with our Dad!! ❤🫧

    I'm 65; I have my beloved Mom's (born 1922) Better Homes & Gardens Cook Book from 1941. It's filled with her handwritten notes on every page, all the meals I grew up on. In a fire, it's the first thing I would grab. It's falling apart but the recipes in it are treasures.

    I was born in 1950...in Georgia...we played outside all day..,the neighborhood moms were the overseers of all the children.dads carpooled to work....alternate cars left with mom...any kid in the hood had trouble, to the hospital...our hood worked like "it takes a village".....we all cooked out...made homemade ice cream...played baseball in our field...( kids and adults)...and 'yes' a few windows got broken...and no one was sued...kids walked to the store a mile away to but candy...went swimming in family owed pool about half mile from hood...everyone watched out for everyone else...I feel grateful for being raised 'back then'....

    Born in the 50’s. Played outside in the summer and winter, all day. Climb trees, jumped off our house, only once, did not get hurt. We always entertained ourselves. The music was great.
    I have My Granny’s, my Mom’s, and my, Better Homes and Garden cookbook. That’s 3 of them.

    I was visiting my dad one weekend several years ago just before he passed away. We were fixing breakfast one morning and got into a conversation about eggs and a double yolk. I told him I had always heard of them but had never actually seen one. Mind you I was about 60 years old. I was frying the eggs as he was frying the bacon. The first egg I cracked had a double yolk!! What a wonderful memory I can look back on. Enjoyed your video!

      I've seen plenty of double yolkers in my 90 years. They aren't as common as they used to be. In the old days when we had chickens, we even had triple yolks from my favorite girl, Henretta.

    I was born in the 50's. I started 1st grade when I was 5 because there was no kindergarten at that time. I walked to and from school with my classmates over a mile to school. We delighted in catching lightening bugs on warm summer evenings. It definitely was a simple, safe time in life, and I'm thankful for it. Only drawback is now my body keeps telling me I'm old, even though my mind doesn't want to believe it!

      I was born in 1957 and we didn’t have kindergarten and couldn’t attend school until we were 6. I started 1st grade in 1963/64. I graduated High School in 1975 when I was 18 years old.

    I was born in 1953. My mother used to make a very similar macaroni and cheese dish. However, she used to add some flour to the milk and egg mixture. She also used shredded cheese instead of cubed cheese, which distributes the cheese more uniformly. She also sprinkled more cheese on top. My sister used to make my mom's recipe as well. I have tried it a few times. It's one of my favorites. I've been having a hankering for some of it lately. This video makes me want it even more. Thanks.

    My kitchen is a 50s kitchen. My house was built in 1957 it was a one owner when I bought it. The kitchen has a small built in oven, a cooktop and the kitchen counter top has the silver band around it. I did replace the flooring because it was worn through in the kitchen but I love this house. Im 64 I grew up in the 60s always home cooked meals unless we went to horse pulls,/ fish fry or we were on vacation. Easy life time to grow up in for kids. We got to be kids.

      I was born in 57. I’m turned 67 March 11. I miss growing up in the 60s when things were so much simpler. We played outside from daylight to dark and never had to lock our doors. ❤

      The 50's, time of segregation, women not allowed to work outside of the home, domestic abuse never got reported, women strong armed into wearing dresses. I am so thankful that I was born in the 1960's when people started to wake up and segregation was disannuled, women started wearing pants and could work outside of the home. It was still crunch time, but it was loosening up.

      @@Parakeetfriend4215 I was born in 1957. My Mom worked and wore pants as did me and my sister ( 1962). I live in a small community in East Tennessee all my life and never thankfully never seen anyone being discriminated because of the color of their skin. The late 50s and 60s were the best times to grow up in we never had to lock our doors or worry about someone abducting children. I had my children in the 70’s and early 80s without having to worry about the things that are going on in today’s society. Unfortunately my grandchildren aren’t as fortunate as my children were having to grow up in today’s society.

    Born in 1950, so naturally all my meals were of the '50s. My mom's Mac & cheese was essentially that same recipe until my Uncle came to visit. He was a cook on a merchant ship and his tiny little addition was one quarter teaspoon of dry mustard. That's it but it made all the difference in the world and to this day I add the dry mustard. Every time I make it, I'll look to the Heavens and say thank you Uncle Theo.

    I also was born in 1951. My parents had a family restaurant and we all worked there. We served the 50s foods. We ate at the restaurant. It was so much fun. I also rode my bike all over the city, no problem. Jumped rope and played with the kids by our house and the restaurant. It was a great life. Wish my grandchildren could experience that kind of life. So safe and fun.

    Born in the 50’s - a whole different world. We never locked our doors and my dad left his keys in the car! I walked two miles to the store with sister, ages 7 and 11. We never felt unsafe, mom just said to be home before dark! Rode my bike alone all over the neighborhood.
    We sang patriotic songs at school the last 15 minutes of the day, and loved it! A joyful childhood. It makes me so sad for kids and parents these days 😢

    I was born in 1957. My mother made Chicken Al King alot. My family still loves this dish. We eat it over rice or toast or egg noodles.

    Love your cooking videos! I was born 1956 and I have always made Mac and Cheese this way. The difference is this: Stir it 2-4 times during the baking process; add extra "shredded cheese on top and paprika the last 10 minutes of baking. You might love it even more.

    I grew up in the 50s. We never had Chicken a la King, but I made it for my own family several times a year. My dad was in the Navy in WWII, and introduced us to SOS; kind of similar but with dried beef that came in a glass jar that you opened by prying the metal lid. You could then keep the jar as a nice juice glass. I still make Chicken a la King from the following recipe from Betty Crocker’s Dinner in a Dish Cookbook 1971 Page 20, that Dad gave me for Christmas early on. This is an anytime comfort dish.
    Chicken or Turkey A la King
    1/3 lb fresh sliced mushrooms (I just use one 6 oz can, sliced and then drained mushrooms)
    1/2 cup diced green pepper
    ½ cup flour
    ½ cup butter
    1 teaspoon salt
    ¼ teaspoon pepper
    2 cups chicken broth, or 2 cups water & 2 bouillon cubes
    2 cups light cream (half and half works well)
    2 cups cubed cooked chicken or turkey
    1 jar, 4 oz, pimiento, chopped (I consider optional)
    patty shells, tart shells or toast cups, or just toast.
    Cook and stir mushrooms and green pepper in butter 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Blend in flour, salt and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring until mixture is bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in broth and cream. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Add chicken and pimiento, heat through. Serve hot in shells or over toast.
    8 servings.

    Oh Mandy how wonderful this video is as these old school recipes are simply the best! These are from the days where people entertained at home instead of meeting at a restaurant. Lost art. We have chickens and double yolks are common with younger chickens and old wives tale is that it's "good luck" when you get them :). I was born in Memphis and loved the Elvis sandwich!

    Funny you showed Tongue Receipe. Growing up on a farm we raised our own beef. Each time a cow went to the slaughter house we got the tongue. I liked tongue...it is a bit dry but it has good flavor. I can almost taste the ice cream. Thanks for sharing!

      @@cooking_the_books that is funny, I recommended your channel feeling those that enjoyed this particular Mandy in the Making video would enjoy you. It didn't even occur to me to do the opposite and recommend this video to you. Mandy's usual videos are viewer recommended recipes her and her family tries, so this one is a tad different for her; I loved she shared a true family favorite she grew up with.

    I won that cookbook as 1st prize in a cake baking contest in Middle School - a banana walnut cake with whipped cream frosting. I wore the book completely out too. Thx for the memory.

    I have the same 2 cookbooks - and mine are in about the same shape. I was born in 1950 (Texas) so I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed all those delicious recipes. And my mom was one of the best cooks in my opinion. Thank you for the video - really enjoyed it.

    @mandyinthemaking I owe you a huge debt of gratitude, my father passed away 5 years ago unexpectedly and I had always planned on getting his Mac N Cheese recipe from him but unfortunately never did. I’ve looked everywhere, to no avail until this video. He would have been 14 when this cookbook came out and I bet you anything my Gram made this for the family. I can’t tell you how ecstatic, excited, and so happy to finally get to have my dad’s Mac n cheese again!! Thank you Mandy for sharing your recipes, from the bottom of my ❤❤!

    I have both of those cook books and still use them. Our kids asked for meals from them in the 80's and 90's. Growing up in the 60's and 70's, my mom served chicken ala king on baked potatoes.

    I was born in 1955. I loved this. My mom had a Betty Crocker cookbook too. I have my mother in law's which was made before my time and a cookbook my in law's gave us for our first christmas after we were married. I will have to go through them again. Thanks for the memories.

    Merita bread was the BEST!!! I live in Knoxville and we had a Merita bread store and it was the bread that froze the best. I was born in 1952 but my Mom was a very basic cook and I honestly don't recall her using a cookbook or clipping recipes. Thanks for this video.

    More '50's & 60's recipes. My brother was in town last week. We had dinner with mom @ her home. (6,000 sq ft mansion but only 20 yo) not a nursing home . Anyways, Rick said after dad would hand crank the homemade ice cream he'd say, "Here Rick, you crank for a while". Jeez, he'd say with a sore arm, & all that rock salt. Then we'd be lucky to get a pint. Lol. For 5 kid's no less. Yes, that was the 50's fun memories!!

    Grew up in the 50s, but we never had Chicken a la King then. I discovered it in the Betty Crocker’s Dinner in a Dish Cookbook 1971, Page 20 that my dad gave me one year for Christmas. Been making it ever since several times per year. The directions read as follows: "Cook and stir mushrooms and green pepper in butter 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Blend in flour, salt and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring until mixture is bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in broth and cream. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Add chicken and pimiento, heat through. Serve hot in shells or over toast. What we did have every once in a while at my dad's request was SOS (creamed chipped beef on toast.) He acquired a taste for SOS while in the Navy during WWII. Amongst other ships and locations, he served aboard the Flagship USS Texas on D-Day, June 6, 1944 at the ripe old age of 18 1/2.

    Oh my, Mandy! I was born in 1950 and I grew up watching my mom use this very same cookbook until in the mid 80's it finally bit the dust and she got the new Betty Crocker cookbook my daughter (47yo) uses today. Thanks for the memories!

    I remember trick or treating in the 50's. Popcorn balls, cash, and candy. No parent had to worry about their child being poisoned. We rode bikes all over the place.

      Trick or treating in the mid-60's, one old lady always gave us homemade Rice Krispie treats and our folks didn't bat an eye. I'd take off on my bike and ride for miles out to the country and back by myself.

    Hi Mandy! I'm your resident food historian, and, off the top of my head, I can tell you that Thomas Jefferson tasted pasta and cheese in Paris in the late 1700s. He loved it and brought it back to the colonies. The first recorded US documentation of a dish called "Macaroni and Cheese" was at a State Dinner around 1801 or so.

    I'm another senior born in 1950. I grew up in rural Wyoming. We left the house in the morning in the summer and came back whenever. We just had to be back at dark, but, oftentimes, after supper, we all went back outside to play Hide and Seek or Kick the Can. Great times!

      I was born in 1960 and loved playing Kick the Can, Red Light, Green Light, Hide and Seek and all the other fun games with the neighbors. Now, kids rarely play outside. We all felt safe then. No one locked there houses. No one would ever go into someone else's house. I miss those times and wish my kids could have experienced them.

    Sweet Mandy, I'm a 73 yo Texan who has been enjoying chicken ala king my whole life. We serve it over rice, baked crispy Chinese noodles, pasta noodles, toast points, or pop overs. I'm tickled that you are enjoying it too. It always
    contained boiled egg chunks. Like you, I leave them out.😂 In college days, we made it with canned mushroom soup, canned chicken and threw in the bell pepper and pimento. It comes in a can too! It is quite good and I often use it to help flavor soups and casseroles.
    Thank you for sharing your family as well as your recipes.
    If you'd move to Vernon, TX, I'd just adopt ya!😅

    I always buy the jumbo eggs at Food Lion because they’re so big and in my brain you get more egg for the money and there’s usually about 4 out of the dozen with double yokes. I used to have chickens and I had one that laid a double yoke egg every day!! She was my special girl😂❤

    I'm 61 and Granny always made her Mac and cheese but we use a can of evaporated milk and alittle whole milk. I still make it today but I add alittle sour cream!

    We have a 1954 oven in our home that is all i use for baking! It's inconveniently tiny, but it's all I know. We get asked about it often! (Questions like, "Does that work?!") Haha)

    I have four or five of those better homes and gardens cookbooks from my grandma and my husband knows that he could never ever get rid of them! They are a family heirloom. Don’t you just love going back in time with all of those old cookbooks? It’s the best.

    I grew up in the 50's! These recipes brought back wonderful memories! My mom made her mac and cheese that way and I still do. My kids and grandkids ask for it all the time. We use buttered crumbs and it makes a crispy topping. Kids fight over crust!

    Guessing I'm the oldest here. Born in 1948,although I don't feel it, and yes the 50's were an absolute wonderful time to grow up. None of the violence ,or drugs we hear about today. It was a time of innocence. Wish my kids ,grandkids,and great grandkids could
    experience life like I did. And Mandi- I've had a triple yolk twice!!

      Nope, I was born a few weeks before 1950. I was born 2-3 months premature. It was a wonderful time to grow up. Our sons grew up in the 1975-77. We lived in a small country town. They talk about their childhood often and how they enjoyed it. I enjoyed Mandi & Steven's 50's video today. I would love more videos like today's.

And, still doing my own housework, driving all over for grocery shopping...Had 6 kids, one born in an Army Hospital during the Korean Conflict. Out of six, only two children are left. Two were taken by Covid. I had two Military husbands , both are gone now. Went back to School in my mid/late 60's, studied Food Cookery & Food Science & received two Associates degrees. Been widowed since 1996. I volunteer at two Hospitals nearby. All in all, it's still been a good life. I found out it does no good to complain to others because it has to be done with a Therapist. I am one of the "Silent Generation Era People," being born in 1934.

    I was born in 1957 and I have both of those cookbooks they were my mothers and we used to make chicken à la king but we didn’t use green bell peppers. We used red lentils instead and it was delicious one of my favorites. Thanks for taking me back down the good memories of my childhood.

    LOL, when Steven said "True Love," it reminded me of the logo on The Settlement Cookbook that all the women in my family and in Milwaukee all had in the 40s and 50s: "The Way to A Man's Heart." It started as a non-profit, philanthropic venture just after the turn of the century when Milwaukee saw a vast migration from various countries in Europe. The recipes represent many such cultures.

    Speaking of old recipes have you ever watched the depression food videos? I did not realize we grew up on a steady diet of depression food. It is good so my family just keeps making it. It is neat to learn when certain foods were created and/or made popular. When you say 1950's Jello really comes to mind and all of the CRAZY combinations they came up with.

      I didn't realize until I was an adult that the food my mom made was low cost/depression type food because they couldn't afford to feed all of us but it was so good. I remember rice and milk as hot cereal for breakfast. So many good memories from the comments and recipes.

      One of my favorite salads is a Jello beet salad from the 1950s, all my quilting friends LOVE it. I amended it by adding pineapple to the list of ingredients, which includes grated onion and horseradish.

    My mom made chicken a la king during summer vacation and served it over toast points. It was something she learned to cook in the 50’s. Now I live with her and I made Turkey a la king for her. I served it over biscuits. Great memories.

    I love these recipes, I'm not sure about the bacon and banana sandwich, but the Chicken Al Aking is one of the things that I made often back in the '70's when I first left home and had to cook my own food. I loved it then and I love it now. Thank you for your recipe!
