    So a tangential fun fact about the play Cordelia is in at the beginning of the episode. She is doing the Ibsen play "A Doll's House," which I performed in almost two years ago with a local community theatre. I was originally going to direct it, but we didn't have enough guys try out, so one of our other members took over directing and I took on the role of Torvald, who is the husband of the character Cordelia is play, whom she's referring to in the monologue. When I was first reading the script and I came to that part about, "When I've lost my looks a little... when Torvald is not as devoted to me.." I immediately went, "Wait a minute, I know that line! That's in an episode of Angel!"
    It's a very good play, and in fairness to Cordelia, the role of Nora, who she's playing, is a _very_ big part, with so many lines. Her character is onstage for 90% of the play. She only leaves the stage for a very small part of Act III.

    The thing that really stands out to me in this episode is when Angel/Angelus force feeds the actress (Rebecca?) the bag of blood. It's such a sudden and violent and disturbing moment. It really shocked me the first time I saw the episode.

    For me this is one of the best episodes of S1. I admit that I always preferred Angelus to Angel on Buffy because I found Angel a little saccharine. I much prefer his character away from Buffy, but it's always delightful to get a visitation from his crazy homicidal twin. :)

    Boreanaz does play an impressive Angelus. Particularly Angelus's sense of humor, which as dark as it is, cracks me up. It's no wonder that Boreanaz has had such a busy career. He's been a lead or major character almost nonstop since 1997. There's not a lot of actors who have done that.

    This was one of several episodes written during the gap between filming episodes one and two. There was no spot set for the episode, and the original script featured Doyle.
    There is a great outtake where Angel stunt double Mike Massa tries to jumo through the glass window, but bounces off of it instead.

    I see so many people not understand how Angel becoming Angelus works in this episode. They think the mythology gets screwed up and/or doesn't make sense. I argue against that because Angel never loses his soul. The Doximal drugs make him think so, as they simulate bliss really well. In essence, Angel is feeling the effects of the Doximal, nothing more. It's why the Angelus of this episode doesn't quite act like the Angelus we know from previous episodes. It's no different than if a human were given or had taken it except humans don't have negative predispositions to happiness. That's why when it wears off his soul isn't gone. It was always there. The drugs were just that good.
    Nothing in the vampire mythology of the series says Doximal wouldn't affect a vampire. This proves that there is more than one way for Angel to risk Angelus on the population. To me, it's another reason Angel shouldn't ever get complacent about the curse. At the end of the day, Angel "not feeling guilt," as Enyos explains in Innocence by saying, "One moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts, and that soul is taken from him" is how the curse works.
    Angel, in this episode, is still feeling guilty, as we can see from the immediacy after him squirting blood in Rebecca's mouth, so in this case, Wesley saying simulated bliss means he still has his soul, but Doximal is so good it is simulating ("an illusion") Angelus. And that is why, as stated above, it can wear off. It always made sense to me and I never believed the curse or shows mythology was messed with.
    Assuming things like this couldn't happen is no different than the Scoobies assuming Angel is good when Angelus is cursed with Angel. Angel isn't the one who is cursed. Angelus is. Not remembering that was the danger back in BtVS S2.

      @@julesreacts It's not as heavy in this comment section. Here, it's more about people not liking it because of how he loses his soul and how it shouldn't be so easy (but that's the same idea as people from other comment sections who think mythology is screwed up). My opinion is he never does lose his soul.

    • @gungho1284
      @gungho1284 6 месяцев назад +12

      @@Buffy8Fan Right. He doesn't lose his soul, it is only taken out of the driver's seat by the drug. Angelus, as a demon, is always there because that's what keeps the body going with the super powers. But the soul is strong enough to control the feelings to make him care about what he does. To feel the remorse and guilt and not want to hurt people. Lots of people do bad things while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Plus the fact that this drug was said to cause bliss might have made some difference to make it worse than just being drunk or tranquilized.

    This episode is a reminder to the audience that Angel (as Wesley puts it) really does walk a fine line. The line between good and evil. It reminds us that as long as Angel is a vampire, Angelus will always be beneath the surface…watching…waiting for an opportunity to finally be free again.
    In Angel’s case, his soul really is a curse, because there’s always potential for him to lose it…literally. Luckily in this episode Angel’s soul only became oppressed for a short time while Angelus took over and wasn’t truly lost.
    Angel was originally cursed to feel eternal suffering, not joy. And if that joy is ever “truly,” felt, the curse begins to break and out comes Angelus!
    Angel now knows this and has a better understanding of it after going through it in Sunnydale. Before he lost his soul in Buffy he didn’t have a clue for 100 years that the curse was linked to his personal true happiness. Which is why from here on out, he’ll always feel a responsibility to not only keep Angelus in check…
    But himself as well…
    Welcome to Angel’s eternal life in Los Angeles Jules!! Enjoy the ride, and have a good day!! 😁😁

    Rebecca invited Angel into her home when they first talked in his office. She said something like, "Stop by sometime. I'll give you a private screening of the show I didn't win the Emmy for." Also, I love how you're the only reactor who knew both that it was the real Angelus and that it would wear off when the drugs did. The other reactors I've seen either thought that Angel was just faking to scare her (which he wasn't), or that it wouldn't wear off (which it did), which means they'd have to curse him again. Angelus is a unique case, all vampires are inherently evil due to lack of a soul, but Angelus’s monstrosity eclipses the evil of almost every other demon. Even The Master once mentioned that Angelus was the most vicious creature he’d ever met. I can help but wonder why Angelus was worse than every other vampire? 🤔

      Because Angel is a sadist. Not just any sort of sadist, but an emotional sadist,l. And the pain and trauma that he delights in is more painful and long lasting than simple death and mayham that most demons delight in. And when he has no soul to moderate his sadistic desires, he really kets it out to play. Episodes like this show the effort he takes to control that side of himself. How, when Angel forces the blood into Rebecca's mouth, that is still Angel, and he enjoyed the fear and terror Rebecca was feeling in that moment. Angelus comes out after that moment. And that is when things get really scary.

    Love this episode! Definitely one of the best from season 1 for me.
    Rebecca is quite the tragic character, rich & famous but extremely lonely, still young but already feeling that she's over the hill, and now also finding it hard to land parts. Her plan for Angel to sire her may have been crazy but I can understand why she'd want it.
    The brief return of Angelus was the definite highlight. He's a truly scary character. Not only is he a violent, sadistic murderer, but the things he says can also be truly hurtful in their own right. David Boreanez is also just so good at playing him, the difference in his performance between Angel vs Angelus shows just what a good actor he is.
    Shout-out to Cordelia in this one, she was on fire. Sooo many funny lines and little moments.
    A fun scene to end the episode on. Wesley & Coredlia giving Angel a 'time out' almost like you would with a misbehaving kid, except instead of being sent to the naughty step he was left tied to a bed instead 😂.
    Loved the reaction Juliette, awesome as ever 🥰. Thanks, and have a great day.

    Never in a million years would I have thought that a drug could temporarily bypass a magical curse cast on a vampire. I mean, when I first watched this, I was betting that the happy pill wouldn't have any effect on Angel since he's a vampire (I should've known better - Faith's poisoned crossbow bolt worked on him, after all). Then, when the pill started to have an effect, I never expected Angelus to show up. I mean, Wes and Cordy were having that discussion about how rare a moment of perfect happiness is, but no, apparently not that rare after all. Perfect happiness now comes in pill form. Lastly, I didn't think the effect would be temporary. The curse says he only needs a moment of perfect happiness. It shouldn't matter how long the drug lasts; once Angelus is free, he's free. This episode just kept throwing me off, time and time again.
    All that said, I get why they went the route they did. Angelus being permanently free would be too big a deal for Cordelia and Wesley to handle on their own. I doubt those chains would hold Angelus if he really wanted to get out.

    It is interesting that you thought Raven was a vampire and that she may not have been human. She is oppressed by her world. I think she feels the fame as dehumanizing, which is why she is so lonely. I think it is what initially drew Angel to her. Also, you are absolutely on the nose about Cordelia and Wesley. Not only do they stick around, but they are also willing to fight him and for him! But I know that part of that is that they know the stakes otherwise! (Pun somewhat intentional... sorry! hehe!) In Buffy S1, David Boreanaz didn't get a lot of opportunities to be really interesting, and I found his acting to be mediocre. Obviously he Buffy 1x7 "Angel" to be in the spotlight, so that worked out alright. Then, he got more experience with acting and now in this episode, David Boreanaz is super good with the switchover to Angelus. Definitely a good stand-alone episode.

    As others have mentioned, and as you talked about in your outro, Angel's tale is a tragic one, and inherently sad when you think about it. As you pointed out, he's very lonely and isolated, and the only people he really has right now are Wes and Cordy. He had Doyle, whom he really cared about, but lost him to the Scourge, and as we saw a few episodes back, that loss still haunts him.
    Rebecca could have become another good friend for him, because she wasn't initially afraid. I think this is particularly important to him at this point in time, because Kate did NOT handle it well when she found out what Angel was. Yeah, she was slowly starting to come around, but then Vampires murdered her father and upended her life AND her trust in Angel.
    Sadly, Rebecca was just thinking of herself in the end, and that selfishness nearly got everyone killed, albeit very ENTERTAININGLY so. David is SO good as Angelus, and you can tell he relishes playing him whenever the opportunity arises. He has such great comic timing and manages to balance comedy and menace very well.
    And how perfect is that ending? Angel chained up on the bed, and left there for who knows how long while Wes and Cordy wait to make sure that the bliss has completely worn off. Maybe they'll be nice and let him listen to a book on tape or something while he lays there? LOL

    Definitely worth a rewatch... I say wait till the end and then do it. It's amazing what you pick up on the rewatch, but the further you go, the more you put together
    For example, and these are just a few points that you're already past, when you watch back to the beginning.... Buffy asks about the free gift Giles got with his subscription, and he says he got the calendar.... It's a lot different after you know what happened to Jenny😢 . Buffy saying that Malcolm could have a hairy back, hits different after you know about Oz. And those are just a few examples that you are already aware of at this point 🤷. The rewatch definitely gives you new insight into random lines that you might have dismissed previously
    There are definitely a ton more insights. But definitely get through the whole series, especially buffy, before you try looking for them

  • @sherrysink3177
    @sherrysink3177 6 месяцев назад +1

    This is one of my favorite episodes of season 1. It's so intense! I did not expect Angelus to come back, but boy did he come back with a vengeance. Forcing Rebecca to drink blood, threatening her and throwing her around, not to mention being completely savage in his words to Wesley and Cordelia... OUCH. I love that moment when Cordelia fakes him out, just for a second, and then she's like, "And the Oscar goes to..." Awesome. ❤ And yeah, sorry, Angel, but you need to stay chained to that bed for a little while in a time-out to think about what you did. 😉 Cordelia refusing to unchain him was really funny. "Uh... Cordelia? Wesley? Guys?" LOL.
    You are so right about Cordelia's speech to Angelus. We really saw the depths of her character, there. We could see how scared she was, and I really liked that they brought up what she has to think about day after day, worrying about the day when he might turn and what she might have to do. SO good! I also liked that the writers included a comment from Cordelia to Wesley about Angelus, how Wesley wasn't around when Angelus came out last time, and he has NO idea how bad it was. Great detail.
    I remember really liking the concept of this episode. It makes so much sense that an aging actress in a place like L.A. might be feeling enormous pressure to stay young and beautiful to keep up appearances and make her fans happy. It's pretty sad, when you think about it, to have to live like that. So I do understand her thinking that it might be no big deal to become a vampire, especially since Angel seems so nice and normal when she first meets him. She doesn't understand the leash that's holding him back from becoming Angelus, and just how vicious a creature he would be and SHE would also become. It's not just a matter of staying young forever and living an immortal life. It's so much more complicated than that, and she had NO idea what she was dealing with. So I love how shocked and freaked out she was. As she should be! Because Angelus is terrifying.
    But there's an amazing energy that David brings to the screen when he plays Angelus that's just so fun to watch. Even though he's so horrible, he's also incredibly engaging and vibrant. If you think about it, David really played both roles well -- Angelus is completely uninhibited and fearless and vicious, while Angel is in contrast so restrained and quiet and cautious in everything he does and says, which makes sense because Angel is so conscious of what he used to be, who he has hurt or killed, and how careful he needs to be to avoid becoming Angelus ever again. You said it well when you called it precarious. As Wesley says, "You walk a fine line, Angel. I don't envy you."

    I agree with your comment about Rebecca inviting Angel into her home. Perhaps she had suspected early on that Angel might be a vampire, and she may have read up on them prior to visiting his office. So, however she did it, he was safe to enter her home.

      I sometimes might miss when the invite happens as there's a lot of stuff going on to try and remember 😸 But I'm glad she did invite him. I wonder if she DID suspect early on... Very interesting!

    I have mixed feelings on this episode. On the one hand it's great to see Angelus. But on the other hand, this 'drug' breaks the lore of his curse so badly they pretend it never happened the rest of the show.

    1. I loved your words of choice, calling them an "interesting pair", usually in other reactions the words "couple, cute, hot, etc." fall.

    love this episode and it was also strange that drugs could temporarily dispel the curse.

    • @hjermsted22
      @hjermsted22 6 месяцев назад

      The curse was not dispelled because Angel never lost his soul. The curse remains intact.
      The drugging allowed the writers to explore what happens in the margins of the curse... in this case during artificially induced euphoric feelings.

      @@julesreacts Isn't it marvelous how we can change our minds about Wesley as a character? I love that so much! I never, ever would have expected to like his character because he was so annoying on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but here he gets much more depth and background and development. Each episode as he grows as a character, I marvel at how much I like his character now. It's a surprise and a delight!
      And each episode he's in, I find myself laughing about it all over again, because I really never would have expected to see him again after Buffy season 3, much less be a character that I'm genuinely interested in. I love it.

      I just wanted to commend your analysis of the episode. 5:42 - a great question - same one I had. 8:47 - very perceptive, and you have seen him before, 10:23 - again, spot on, and 11:36 - annoyance! - Angel has 3 people looking out for him this night!
      A tremendous flip (very well done), and most excellent acting from the 3 main characters - especially Angel, and Cordelia. A very well written episode - the minor kerfuffle over minor things aside... it's a work of fiction, not a documentary... it entertains! - and well acted. One of the best from season 1 so far.🥰
      Enjoy your Tuesday, Jules.💜 Thank you, once again, for enjoying this show enough to put so many hours into producing these reactions.😊

    This episode always bothers me. The end makes 0 sense. Being happy real or synthetic doesn't make him evil. Losing his soul does. If it didn't make him lose his soul he wouldn't be evil. Period.

  • @mrmidlife2546
    @mrmidlife2546 7 месяцев назад +2

    I always hated how this episode played out. I don't like the idea that the arcane forces that put his soul in place can be fooled so easily, or that his soul can simply return once it's worn off. Not after the body count and effort required to put it back the first time on Buffy. Although Boreanaz, Charisma and Alexis are all bringing it home brilliantly, drugged Angelus is truly terrifying. Bad plot holes, great performances.

    Actress drugs Angel with a drug that makes him feel happy so he temporarily turns evil. That doesn't even make any sense. Angel turns into Angelus because he loses his soul as a condition of the gypsy curse. So, since the "happiness" is drug induced his soul temporarily goes away? The Gypsy curse recognizes the difference between "real" and "drug induced" happiness and treats them differently? Makes no sense at all.
    It's a fun episode to watch, but the gimmick doesn't make sense with established lore.

    • @coldservings

      @davidmeadows5627 and why would the drugs suppress the soul. That would have to be "written in" to the curse and why would the folk who created the curse include such a provision?

    One of my least favourite of Angel season I though I love the intro. It does fit nicely with the Empath demon's read of Cordelia's own belief in her acting ability.
    Interesting that you thought she was a vampire right away. I never got that vibe but it makes a lot of sense as you watch it again and has an element of truth.
    Nice view of angelus again. Love how horrible and how petty evil can be.
    The agent called Angel a very beautiful man and told him to call him at the party in the first episode.
