Hi Jessie. Very unusual for me to comment (bit of a technophobe and very much a loner since my wife died) Chilli powder has worked very well for me to deter rodents, I just scatter it in the area from supermarket shaker ( apparently interferes with their respiratory system, but doesn’t seem to bother cats). Also watering plants with a chilli and garlic cocktail seems to deter most little beasties from munching on them, I actually water at the root so the plants take it on board, tea spoon of each to a butt of water monthly. I don’t seem to get responses anymore “probably something I’ve done” so don’t worry about a reply. (Bit of an essay wasn’t it😮. Really enjoy your content many thanks Kip
Great tips for the chilli / and garlic to deter the little legs and winged visitors. I've been playing "f××k that rat" all winter, chasing him out of one compost bin after another, then the tunnels under the chicken wired bases, or containers ... every day is "seriously, here?" ... I know, there's never one, I'm fooling myself. I hear you saying you've become withdrawn in your grief and I'm sorry to hear that. Its the loneliest pain and people always think they know better about what you SHOULD be doing. Mind yourself ...
I'm putting lino into my new-ish potting shed, but not before I've sealed the wood on the floor. Walking on cardboard and newspaper right now to keep the floor clean and dry, but a bit miffed that the guys who built it didn't care about their muddy boots ... 😫.
Jess, you are such so joyful and happy hearted person, it's a joy to watch your channel, you could have been an absolute genius comedian, you make me laugh , I wish you an happy ending with your 🐀 story , love from 🇫🇷❤.
Hi Jessie and mum, haven't you considered moving the poly to where you put your swingseat? Next to the greenhouse? It will get way more sun and no tree roots. I mean, now you can cause it's all stripped down and also you'll have a lovey place to sit down in the shade when you put your swingseat under the trees. I've been thinking about that for 3 episodes now... 😂 Love to watch you chaps. 🥰
Have you tried a rat detergent spray. There are several different ones and you spray them where the rats travel. They can be quite effective and are non toxic.
Hi Jessie and your Mum, great job shovelling all that soil out of your polytunnel, a lot of hard work, well done 🎉 well done to your Mum, she has worked really hard too, well done 🎉 you have both done a great job on the greenhouse & well done Jessie building the frame for your potting table. You have both worked hard. Happy Mothers Day to your Mum 🥀💐🌹 Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Feels good getting things done 😊 looking forward to seeing all your gardens flourishing ❤ and hopefully mine too 😉 😅 Happy Mother's day to mum ❤ cheers 🍻 ❤😊
I love all the things we do in the garden. Maintenance is so important. So rewarding. Mother's Day here in the USA is in May. I didn't realize it was different there! ❤ Happy Mother's Day to Mum 🌻
I know how you feel with the digging soil out we've been shifting 3ft deep wet soggy soil for 3 weeks now 😞 (wish I could hire you for design planning 😊) your also the reason I have a growing dahlia collection 😂 Great work on the Polly hope the cheeky rats move on (I wouldn't poison either) happy mother's day to your lovely mum 🥂 fab vlog Jessie 🥰
Hi Jess and mum you doing a great job as always. It’s all starting now isn’t it. I pricked a lot of my seedlings out yesterday. I not growing so many of each kind this time. It seems more manageable. I haven’t sown flowers or herbs yet and tomatoes and cucumbers will be sown end of march. But veg wise brassicas leeks onions etc all going good. You amaze me how you get stuff done so quickly. Lino in greenhouse will be slippery if you drip water. Just thinking of mum as you tend to slip and trip more easily when you get older. Just a thought. Slabs easiest to sweep. I thought woodchip the best but you want to get away from it. Anyway I sure you will decide soon enough. Cheers ma dears🥂
Loved this vlog Jessie!! 👌 Started undertaking a greenhouse project myself including diy staging, but no idea where to start so between you and JB, i feel like i'm getting a very timely masterclass! 😁👍 All best! Great channel. Thanks for sharing the joy of gardening! ❤
Eurgh😮 the rats ran up your arms?!! I always have nightmares that might happen then tell myself ‘that won’t happen!’ Argh! Renewed sense of peril!!! Beautiful shots of your lovely mum at the end there. ❤❤❤
Loved the video, always enjoy when you do a working project. I'm a bit concerned though about your greenhouse staging, you said you hadn't attached the legs, hopefully it won't topple over 🤞. I got a 6x4 GH last year, and built some heavy duty staging for it, out of old pallets...the only trouble was, I couldn't get it through the door 😂.
For the second vlog in a row I can’t help but think-Alice you’re supposed to fall down the rabbit hole not a rat hole 😆. Lots of hard graft but great job getting the poly cleared and the greenhouse looks fab! Kathleen too getting the compost all turned. Well done 🥂
You and mum did great today all that digging, I even show my son your mum working on the compost bin trying to give him a message I would like mine turn all now LOL ❤❤
Hi Jess. I'm from South Australia & have been a viewer for a number of years. Love your channel & your enthusiasm for all aspects of gardening it's infectious. Also love your little jaunts you take us on. I was horrified hearing about the baby rats all over you. My worst nightmare! Give me snakes, lizards, spiders & possums any day of the week. With spring dressing up your garden there's one not so spring like & that's poor Berta. I think it's about time she reined to their compost & you rummaged at home for some more spring like attire & introduced a new garden guardian! Heather.
I keep telling people not to plant Japanese Anemone. Ours is rampant and I'm literally pulling it out by the extra-large trug full. It looks so delicate in bloom, but it's as tough as old boots and a real thug in the garden.
Oh my! Just the thought of digging into a rats nest with a bunch of rat babies 🤯🤯 I feel ya! But very nice work with the poly! Looking forward to your sowing next week! ❤️❤️
I am new to your channel so my apologies for asking a question you have probably answered umpteen times already, but here goes: to whom does the gorgeous Lily belong? She really seems at home in your plot.
We put weed fabric, rather thick, then 20 bags of pea gravel in our greenhouse which has been marvelous! It retains some moisture and heat. 😊 I don’t pot up in the greenhouse, but have that station just outside the house. Herbs loved overwintering in the greenhouse - I need to actually harvest some to dehydrate for tea bags.
Vinyl flooring. you might be lucky and get an offcut/endof roll. Interlocking plastic squares are quite good floring, the ones I put down for a customer were really easy to lay just need a rubber mallet. They are easy to trim with a hand saw at the edges. They come in several colours so you could make a snazzy pattern.
Lots of digging, surprised u didn't dig all yhe way to Australia 😂. Ive got no more room for seeds lol. I need to pot on 😅 oops happy belated birthday to u. Also i need to sort my greenhouse floor out, not sure how though lol
What a great upgrade it's going to be once you're done - now just poor Bertha (?) needs a new set of clothes and she'll look snazz too 😊 I'm so looking forward to lunches with Mum this summer - lovely! Happy Mother's Day, Mum xx
Nice to see that your plot isn't water-logged, over here on the Essex coast we are still suffering an excess of water, the beds are still to wet too plant out....things are backing up!!
If you can get any put paving slabs on edge about 18 inches or so deep all around the outside of the greenhouse/polyhouse that will be deep enough to discouraged the rats and even some of the tree roots
Quite enjoyed this video. I am considering building a poly-tunnel/potting shed this spring and you've pointed out a few things to be aware of as I plan. I expect I will be putting in a brick floor of some description because of durability, drainage, and ease of moving around as necessary. Thanks again for the videos!
Hi jessie great video hard work for you both digging and thinking about rat's fills me with dread good luck with them, lovely seeing your girls at the allotment there beautiful ❤
My daughter bought me one of those swing seats last summer - it's still in it's box in my porch 🙄 I can't wait to get it out and set up in the back garden 🌻🌼🌷 my son spotted a rat in my back garden last year 😮🐁 it might have been attracted by all the bird seed my grandson spilled while helping me fill the bird feeders 🐦🐦⬛ (let's blame the 4 year old 😆) we only saw it once so I cleared all the debris in the garden under the bushes and it didn't come back 😊 well I haven't seen it 👀🙄🥴 this will be my first year growing fruit and veg I've been bingeing your videos from 12 months ago right up to now and have learned such a lot 🍓🌽🥕🥔🫘🥬🍅🌶️
I always wanted a piece of plot myself but thinking about the rats made me think twice. If rats come up like that to me I will be screaming my head off and run for my life. I still want to plant though. But don’t like pest. I bought one of those vibrations thingy of Temu and hope it will work. I got one to repel the cats too
I am wondering if you could scavenge some river rock to fill in those rat tunnels. A couple/few buckets 🪣 may be enough to discourage future redevelopment. Fist size rocks, maybe. Maybe that recycle yard had broken pieces of cement and/or brick 🧱 or something. Hmmm??
Rodents do not like digging through pea gravel. So maybe a thick layer on the floor before compost. Just a thought. I always look forward to your videos. Thank you.
I am currently having major heebie jeebies at my plot, on Sunday it was like a rat disco, they were all over the site watched them running everywhere🙄, found holes in and out of my compost bin so my husband put traps down, I have lost confidence to go down to plot after one rat knocked on the greenhouse door while I was in it asking to come in from the rain !, Unfortunately the rats seem attracted to the plots that have chickens on them, which I have to walk past to get to mine. The council are sending the pest control person round so hopefully the numbers will reduce soon. Take care. X
4:35 poor Berta needs a make over 😂. Great job 👏 I hate rats 🐀 but hopefully they have moved on now with all your movement. How’s mom’s hearing she getting better ❤️🩹. 21:28 black elderberry is coming out and looks lovely. My spring bulbs are either late or eaten by something under the soil. Hmm 45 seconds later no rats running around 🤦♀️. If you’ve been digging a lot they might have moved off. Lots of big jobs getting done ✅ have a wonderful week ladies and happy gardening 🧑🌾 Ali ☔️🇨🇦
We always have ratgate here on our farm!. Our cats do a great job with keeping the population down, but when we have chicks or ducklings hatching its a nightmare as they're attracted by the cheeping. Full time job keeping the babies safe. They've eaten all my Cavolo Nero this year, nibbled it clean away. Also seem to have taken a liking to the grape hyacinths for some reason as well as nibbling all my tulip bulbs way under the ground. Found a massive hole leading into my cold frame as well. Ah well.....we have to try and get along with nature I suppose 🤣. Good luck with your defences Jessie!!
Another lovely vid thank you. Concerning the rats - my choice is to use a live squirrel trap baited with bird food so if a bird or hedgehog goes in it can be released. Rats 'go to sleep' after three to four days and can be disposed of. A sturdy mesh under the polytunnel should prevent rats entering but what about roots from the big trees nearby? Will the two layers of weed membrane be enough? You may find it necessary to put in a root barrier - traditionally a trench between the trees and the poly tunnel dug down some feet and filled with concrete, sorry
Hi Jessie. You and your mum must be exhausted!! I wanted to ask your advice- I sowed 4 cucumbers in January as you suggested, was delighted when 3 germinated. I took them out the propogator, repotted them and put them in my unheated conservatory. They were fine for 10 days or so then 2 just completely wilted. I brought all 3 into the kitchen but 2 are gonners. Do you think the conservatory was just too cold for them ? Thanks
Unbeknownst to many rats leave a trail of urine virtually everywhere they go. When their urine trail is disrupted, they become confused and uncomfortable. When you fog with cedar oil, the aroma that we find so pleasing effectively disrupts the scent of the rodent’s urine, and rodents will then avoid the area that has been treated and search for another area to make their home. Fogging is an excellent solution when you are attempting to evacuate a rodent infestation. Not only will a fogger be more effective for larger applications, but it effectively disperses the cedar oil throughout the nooks and crannies that could be difficult to access or easily be overlooked by other application methods. Cedar oil fogging is safe for use both indoors and out, and is effective in a wide variety of areas including homes, offices, storage buildings barns, warehouses, restaurants, hotels and more. Since cedar oil is non-toxic, it can be used in kitchens and around pet food without concern. Simply fill your fogger with the cedar oil product of your choice and either set the fogger up as a stationary unit, or hand carry it to spread the formula throughout areas of infestation.
Would it be a huge disadvantage if you used (say) 30 litre pots to grow your plants in the poly tunnel. Sat on a bed of wood chips or sand you put on top of your metal mess and weed membrane. With say your weepy hose in the wood chip/ sand base. Would that reduce your tree root and rat invasions? Or in your experience will you get better yields from planting direct into a new raised bed? Also would an old cotton rag soaked with old oil burn a bit longer to create your smoke? I saw once someone using a paraffin weed flame gun used to push a blast of fumes through the rat tunnels which makes them beat a retreat
Along with your other viewers, I'm worried about you getting hantavirus. Anyone who comes in contact with rat poop, urine, or nests could get this disease. Gloves and face masks are things you should be using. This disease can cause organ damage. When we had a rat infestation in our shed, we had to destroy everything we weren't able to wash and disinfect. And then spray floors, etc. with a bleach solution. Luckily, we're now able to have an exterminator that has a rat poison that is formulated to have no secondary kill. Means that ANY animal (birds, cats, dogs, possums, coyotes, etc. in our area, will not be affected by poison.
Hi that's why you have 🐀 because you have a pond because they have water 💧 so you well never get read of them so you will always have the problem with them

Omg- you & your mum are f’ing adorable❤!
Blimey wot a lot of digging but strangely satisfying 😂
Like the bench for the greenhouse. Suggest you add another set of legs in the half way along the bench - that way it won’t sag. 😊
Hi Jessie and mum, haven't you considered moving the poly to where you put your swingseat? Next to the greenhouse? It will get way more sun and no tree roots. Tiny raptors. That should warn them away! Well now, Tony C won’t be bothering about the greenhouse now. Progress!😊
I wouldn't be messing with rat infested soil without gloves on, you'er brave. :)
Glad to see your dad.
Happy Mum's Day! 😊❤
Great idea the lino. A lot easier than lugging big slabs of concrete for one. Cheers kiddo! And Happy Mother's Day to your mum 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Be careful with lino in case it gets slippery but I thought that would look cool too

Also, you got the book by Huw Richard’s! I’ve got to wait two months for mine.😢
🎉Happy birthday Jessie, strangely enjoyed watching all the digging, as it's all I've been doing too 😅. Must be fabulous finally turning 21 😂.
Eurgh😮 the rats ran up your arms?!! I always have nightmares that might happen then tell myself ‘that won’t happen!’ Argh! Renewed sense of peril!!!

I received my copy of Huw's book a couple of weeks ago (Canada)....haven't read it yet but soon...very soon!

Having someone to hold open a bag while ypu fill it is a very important and helpful job. Top mom and top daughter
Well done Jesse! Hope your back will be ok after all of that digging
We put weed fabric, rather thick, then 20 bags of pea gravel in our greenhouse which has been marvelous! Hi. Can’t you grow in this lovely looking soil in the greenhouse?
I enjoyed all digging 😅
Geranium 'Rozanne' (Geranium 'Jolly Bee')
Nice to see that your plot isn't water-logged, over here on the Essex coast we are still suffering an excess of water, the beds are still to wet too plant out....things are backing up!!
all the roots your pulling out are from the ivy iv got the same prob with a hedge thats taken over with ivy bees love it
If you can get any put paving slabs on edge about 18 inches or so deep all around the outside of the greenhouse/polyhouse that will be deep enough to discouraged the rats and even some of the tree roots
I love the Rapture sign its perfect. Happy Mothers Day Mum 🌷

Hmmm??
Inderatigable!! 😀😀

Can you look around for slabs?
You need JB to come and do the greenhouse floor for you, if you have the time.

Hi Jessie. You and your mum must be exhausted!!
I wanted to ask your advice- I sowed 4 cucumbers in January as you suggested, was delighted when 3 germinated. I took them out the propogator, repotted them and put them in my unheated conservatory. What is the black plastic you're using on your compost bins please? Thanks :)
It looks like old compost bag that have been reused
Jessie, please wear gloves when playing anywhere that rats have been.
Digging was greatly entertaining BUT I would like you to use gloves while around RAT STUFF!
I agree my father contracted meningitis whilst working with straw bales that had been infected rats
Our friend, a rowing club member, died from Weils disease caught when taken the rowing boat out of the Thames.
