N Texan here, and I typically wait until after Valentines Day. In the last few years, there can still be a cold spell with freezing temps, sometimes ice and sleet. So we wait. After that, the temps stay stable and can prune the roses and crepe myrtles.
I'm so sorry. I planted 3 DA 'Queen of Sweden' roses to represent my mom and her two sisters (my grandpa's parents came here from Sweden). Seeing them grow makes me feel my mom is nearby.
My neighbor has a rose that her mother brought over from Germany! She was born in early 1940, so, you can guess why they left their home. So lovely to see it bloom, and the scent is intoxicating. May you find peace and comfort in growing those plants in your mother's honor. 🤗🌹
Jenny, I'd call YOU the generous gardener for how well you teach us to maintain our gardens. 🙂 In Minnesota, we haven't had snow cover for quite a while. I mean, we were up to the mid 50s this week! So, it's really difficult to restrain myself from getting out there and start cleaning up, trimming up my garden. But, I can hear, What would Jenny say? "Hold off because you still have months of winter." I asked a clerk at Lowe's the other day when their garden center opens and I found she was a kindred spirit. We're all antsy to get gardening. I would like to get the jump on the season by working on a hardscape project. I'm going to place square concrete pavers in a checkerboard style in my weedy gravel garden path. Maybe less surface will keep the weeds more manageable. Ooh! I'm getting so excited to get outside. 😃
I live in Louisville, KY. I usually wait until early March to do my late winter pruning. Because we live in a transitional area of the country (not really in the south, but not really in the midwest), our winter to spring weather patterns can change from year to year. Some years give us a cold and wet March, while other years provide early warm temps. It is a guessing game every year. We are currently experiencing a very warm February. But March could be a different story. My plans could change.
I’m in central Texas, so I wait until Valentine’s Day to defoliate and trim my roses. I’m excited for spring, I can’t wait to start planting! I just put my order in this morning. I’m so ready to plant up my beds I almost bought a house plant this morning when I purchased my Rosetone. 😂
Eastern Virginia here, I wait until at least the end of February due to the frost and freeze and we have had snow the first week of March. I’m in zone 8b.
Yippee! I have been waiting for this video! Thanks to you I bought four David Austin Roses last year and now need to prune them for the first time. Thanks for all the educational videos!
In pensacola I just pruned several D Austin roses but u taught me how to prune the climbers I never knew how so this was a great instructive video for me thanks so much Jenny.. 👏👏👍♥️
Great information. I'm in Indiana, so it's not quite time to prune. You sure make me feel more at ease about it. Love your videos and the education you put in them. ❤❤
Thanks for the go ahead! I’m in central Texas and waited til now to see how our crazy weather would pan out. Bushes all green with new growth, so was a little sad but needed it!
Good morning, Jenny☕️ I ordered my first David Austin Rose. Eagerly awaiting it’s arrival 😍The Zephirine Drouhin climber. I cannot wait. This video was perfect timing. Have a Blessed Day 😊🐶
Thank you Mrs.Jenny for the tips❤😊 Im here in Louisiana, but im gonna wait a few more weeks to prune my Roses . About the end of February, beginning of March ... Im also gonna be planting a new Rose bush at the beginning of March to replace one that died.
You are so right about pruning roses but it is sooo hard to talk myself into making that first cut. Mine are cut back, different growing zone, but I check them everyday to make sure they don’t “give up”. Thanks, for the informational video demonstration.
Hi Jenny, I live near Williamsburg Virginia. Last year I had terrible beetles that ate my beautiful Kiss Me Kate roses what can I do to prepare for them? Thank you Katherine
Jenny thank you for this video. Roses never were my favourite. When I moved to this house I pulled out what I could, but over the years some suckers are coming up and I decided that, since they are old, don’t know the variety, I want them to grow. Question is how do I prune these since they aren’t that tall yet?
I have two Climbing roses, there were shipped to me in January. I am in zone 6b. When is best to plant them. As right now they are in an unheated garage. Starting to leaf out some. Thanks for all the information you give.
What are your thoughts on this rose on one side of the arbor and a clematis on the other? Would they play well together? I was thinking it may provide blooms at different times and the mingling would be pretty
I just love your channel. Always so helpful. I have 14 David Austins going on their 3rd year so this video was so helpful and timely. QUESTION: I digress but I'm curious about your potting machine. Does it wet down your soil as it fills the pots to moisten it? I have a small nursery and farmstand and I know if I put the soil in my pots dry it repels the water the first few times till the soil gets soaked so I always have to mix some water with it before it goes in the pot. Just curious.❤😊
I am guessing my back yard rose is like your rose on the arch due to the extremely large canes and side shoots except it has little red roses. The previous owners took out the octagon pergola instead of replacing it. I know this because I found photos of the back yard they left behind. I believe it rotted, so they chopped all the roses to make it look presentable to sell. I am finding roses growing out from the center of my hydrangeas and long cane roses up by my front door with no supports that have big wicked thorns…in and out throughout high maintenance flower beds. I am zone 8b in Western Washington outside of Seattle. So much rain and black spot issues.
I’m in zone 7b and I’ve had a knockout rose for a long time. I’ve had no issues pruning that rose but I added a Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose and a Jacqueline du Pre shrub rose to my garden last year. Since these are baby plants, do I need to prune them at all? They didn’t grow a ton for me last year. Both were transplanted during the season.
@@GardeningwithCreekside Close ups would have been nice as you were pruning your climber-it was filmed from a distance. You showed a small section afterwards. A little confusion for beginners. Some don’t understand the old wood, damaged, new or what the disease may look like that needs to be cut out. Hope you don’t take that as a criticism because it isn’t meant that way; I think some of us just need clarification. Thank you for all your hard work and passion…you keep a beautiful inspiring garden and attitude!
I think the one rose, Cadfael, is cad-file or cad-vile. I think it's named after the mystery series by Ellis Peters. I learned it by watching the TV series on PBS 😂
Could you explain which upward canes you didn’t cut and chose to add to you main structure? As I watched the video you left quite a few on the left side shooting straight up and then at the end they weren’t there. Did you attach them to the main structure or did you cut them at ground level?

So we moved in a home that was built in 1998. We found a rose half dead underneath a huge 50 foot tree. Well we moved it and guess what? She's a climbing rose. 😂 i was like what?! How? Underneath a massiive tree? Why? 😂. So now we have a pergola and She's climbing up it. I have to prune her and train her to go up. I just need gloves and good quality felcos. I think its time. 😊

Me too.
I'm now 8b in TX. Easter's early this year, so I'm thinking it's going to be cooler then. cgzone8
Same but I’m in SWMO.
Lost my sweet mom in November last year, so finally planting my first rose(s) this year in her memory.

Those gauntlet gloves are GAME CHANGERS for pruning anything with thorns!
Yes they are!!!
Totallly needed this video!! Was thinking on what to do with the roses this morning!

Just trimmed mine up today inTulsa,Ok… looking at my original rose garden to a raving infection that has gone through the area the past 5 years!
Here in zone 9 Louisiana, everyone says an easy date to remember to prune is Valentine’s Day
So timely! This is something I want to learn about today. 💗 Thank you!

Great video as always my Generous Gardener is going on the second season I’m hoping for blooms this year.

In SoCal usually dec thru feb big prune. Then during the year prune as needed.

Thank you for the tutorial. I’m adding more roses this year. I’m 6b. When is the best time to plant?
ha ha love that "Professor Google".... I am going to borrow that saying now... ha ha Hi from Nash County NC... Love your videos...
Central Texas 8b…my pruning of roses will be completed tomorrow, but certainly prior to President’s Day.

Do you apply dormant oil at this time of year to help reduce problems later on?

Our potting machine just spits out the dry soil we put in it. We water after they’re planted!

I showed you how I prune my climbing rose in this video 😊
I have roses with new growth starting. They look pretty. I have to say I’ve never pruned my roses before and they do well. Should I be pruning them??
Unless they are an heirloom climbing rose, then yes you should prune them once a year

Do you feed them when you prune them? Thanks!😎✌🏻
I feed them once they have lots of new growth

Once they begin to flush out lots of new growth
