PH can be anything. Once when I measured the ponds of various people in the same neighbourhood I found that they varied from 6.5 to 7.3 and I gave up early on when I found it difficult to know the equation and its causal relationship. The bottom line is that KOI is healthy to show good swimming and behavior, and we realised that it would be beneficial to focus on this.
Its quite common for PH to swing marginally from morning to evening due to the release of C02 overnight from any plants, algae, decaying matter, etc. I would ensure the KH is right and oxygenate the water all the time with air-stones. Adding Calcium Carbonate will help with high PH buffering, and Sodium bicarb for KH (don't add at the same time). I know you add FOK (being calcium mont), so your GH should be okay. I inject C02 into my planted tanks to do the opposite, but still have to oxygenate at night to prevent heavy PH spikes. The PH fluctations are way more in my planted tanks softwater. My readings morning are 7.8 and evening are 8.1ish. KH and GH always aim high in range.
Great video and update. I’m in exactly the same boat as you Andy. 7/ 7.5 in the morning and 8.5 in the evening. Koi also spitting food out but eventually eating it all. Also sluggish in the morning and perk up as the day goes on. Oh the joys 😂
Hiya, I'm riding thisnonemout with no trickle in for a few days and keeping an eye on the Kh so that's doing its job. Maybe top up if filter clean is needed. Monitoring the tap water which mine has started to correct itself leave some in a bucket and retest after 24hrs) then restart the trickle again..🤞🤞😉
Im still getting the same sort of results as you .. only difference is the fish are swimming normally and don't seem too bothered. I did wonder if the test kit was wonky ? So I have ordered a new Ph and a new KH kit and will see if that changes. Still doing water changes but have greatly reduced feeding....fyi..ABSOLUTELY TIPPING IT DOWN in Manchester right now ( 9.15am ) so that won't help
Andy, I took 2 samples of my tap water, as I'm in a similar situation to you. I tested one of my samples immediately and straight from the tap I had a pH of 7.5. The other sample I left for 3 hours before testing. The result was a pH of 8.5. I'm not able to explain why the tap water pH changes over a 3 hour period but its possible that dissolved CO2 in the tap water supply gases off over that period resulting in higher pH. Someone with the ability to test dissolved carbon dioxide may be able to confirm.
Good testing there... The water company said that there are different situations where water could he sitting in the pipes and produce a different result to busy times of the day when water pipes are used more...🤔🤔 Also found out that the water i use comes from 3 different reservoirs located around the area..🤔
I was just checking the air quality in Stoke ( I think you mentioned you were in this area) and it’s poor. I wonder if air pollution is causing your problem. Try filling two vessels with tap water and seal one up. Leave them out for 24 hours and then compare the ph
Nice update Andy I'm having problems with my water too gh kh have been higher than normal my kh from tap is nil and I've not added any bicarb for mths, but at this time of year I filters are kicking back into action and will consume some of it. Hope yours go back to normal soon
Has it anything to with the rain in your pond especially the amount we have had would alter maybe if rainy heavy at night then test in the morning ? Just a thought
Hi Andy, not sure if this will help, but have you thought about increasing your oxygen in the pond. Watching your video It doesn't look like you have your airstones in yet. A couple of years ago I was speaking with Finch Filtration as I had a similar problem & he mentioned that the sample from the tap was rich with oxygen, but if you leave it a few hours the oxygen clears & you get the true reading.
Photosynthesis Vs respiration and waste is my theory, my PH sits around 7.2 -7.7 , if I feed less it stabilizes at 7.4 and that’s with a 20% water.change every 2 weeks
I’ve resided to less interference is more , in nature the aquatic balance resolves itself from season to season and I’ve taken that approach as a water keeper , also one of the reasons I keep a couple of trimmed lilies in the pond , they take out the nitrate and minimize the toxins in the water , that’s just my preference and what I know keeps my koi happy
I’ve had similar problems this spring but my water is from a borehole supply so definetly not a mains tap issue. Issue seemed to be blanket weed staring which was releasing CO2 at night especially after a very sunny day . I treated the blanketweed and increased my aeration at night and it has stabilised. Fish were showing similar symptoms to yours and all seems to have settled now. Seems to be a spring thing.
Yeah seems to be the same time of year as last year but I don't recall it happening the year before...🤔🤔 I've only a whisp of blanket week so don't think that's enough to cause any issues..🤔
Could the temperature of the water your testing make the colour different?? Its cold when it comes out the tap but must be warmer when taking from the pond. Put some pond water in the fridge before adding the ph test??
Interesting, can you tell me how much you are turning over? I just got a maltybay filter, but I've been told I'm not putting enough water through it, but I thought the slower the better, thanks mate
Couldn't ya just scream 😅 I'm same in Belfast one of my koi is on the bottom not eating all the rest are chucking it down though so I've lightened the feeds a bit . It has to be UK's weather

PH varies between night and day, I’ve also noted a different in the filters and pond. Lee hadfield covered this topic last year I think 👌

My rain water tests at 7.3ish so shouldn't do any harm but help to top up a little..😉👍
Nice update, Andy. hope you get things sorted got luck mate👍👍
Thank you..😉👍

Thanks for that. Now that sounds like a good test..👍🤔

Seems lots of people around the country are having same issues...🤔🤔🤨

Hiya, my rain tests at 7.3ish so the rain today shouldn't do any harm..😉👍
I've just read a post regarding your Ph Andy.
The long and the short of it was aeration during the night due to dissolved co2..
Hiya, I've also been using my floating skimmer to now added air into the pond...😉👍

Hiya, yeah got all my air on now. Pond and filters have everything blowing in plus using my floating skimmer each day to place more into the Pond..😉👍
Yes I think I may need to have a word and ask my local landlord to have a word with the brewery to find out why my piss is not running clear 😂
😆😆😆😆😆

Yep hopefully..🤞🤞

I've got a Kockney Koi 10000 filter with a 8000 ltr constant pump..
@KoiPondLifestyle thanks mines a hockney 10000 as well .I will have to look at mine. But thanks again mate.
My does the same comes out 7.0 to 7.2, ph in pond is 8.2 in evening 8.6 to 8.8
Are you feeding late evening or when it's dark?
No. My last feed is around tea time more feednin the morning s than the late afternoon..
CHECK YOUR KH
Kh is 7..😉👍
Couldn't ya just scream 😅 I'm same in Belfast one of my koi is on the bottom not eating all the rest are chucking it down though so I've lightened the feeds a bit . It has to be UK's weather
Yeah very frustrating at a time when we want the Koi up off the bottom and feeding while we can...🤨😉
