As a member of the Scottish Schoolboys' Club (a Christian youth group), I remember Roddy McMillan coming to speak to us one Sunday night about a year before he died (he lived locally, in Pollokshields in Glasgow). He was one of the finest public speakers I have ever heard and full of great stories about the making of The Vital Spark.
I can guess you loved hearing what happened on the set? in the stories Para Handy could tell a story about his adventures on board the Vital spark. did you know that he married the Baker's widow?
was not roddie in both earlier series of the vital spark? gregor fisher did a later version.the original b and w version had duncan macrae as para handy and i think roddie appeared in that as well.
Yes Roddy McMillan was Dougie in the first series, which was entitled Para Handy Master Mariner. Duncan Macrae was the Captain, John Grieve was MacPhail and Angus Lennie (who would later be Shughie McFee in Crossroads) was Sunny Jim.
This episode is genius. Great cast, great script. Has one of the best gag lines ever: "Ye see this thing that's goin' roon an' roon?" "Aye" "It should be goin' up an' doon!".
i think the best part of the episode is where the Captain and the Engineer have a argument about the state of the Vital Spark's steam engines i think the Engineer's opinion was right
There are two excellent books by Stuart Donald where he writes Para Handy tales after the style of Neil Munro. 'Para Handy All at Sea' and 'Para Handy Sails Again'. Well worth a read.
Wonderful series. From the cast, the script, the locations. It's a shame they didn't make more. You would hope the someone somewhere might be sitting on a copy of one of the missing tapes. Gold Dust. Roddy McMillan, John Grieve, Walter Carr, Alex McAvoy, four wonderful actors.
Only one of the Black & White episodes survive that being Drop Of The Real Stuff think it was taken down due to Copyright and only 4 of the colour ones from this series
You had this on before, but it had the closing credits slightly cropped. Thanks for uploading the complete version. I may be a bit of an anorak, but it does make a difference, I think. Chust sublime!
I remember this as a kid .loved it then and now . Can anybody tell me the title of the old ealing movie this series was based on? I would love to see it again
@@kennethmacgregor-Gregorach thank you Kenneth I've been looking for this movie for years . I love the way they give the yank the run around .he's definitely out of his league
while i like this episode i don't like how the Captain treats the engineer, he is not worried about him when the steam pipe bursts in the engine room and then complains when the engineer is unable to get the steam engines workin again and at the end the engineer hurts his back
Tacoma Washington state West coast U.S.A. here, I have family in Motherwell Scotland, I love this show😊
Brilliant episode a gem💎
One of the best comedies of all time.
Great cast. I watch them over and over again.
I've seen this so many times and it never gets old. Great comedy can be based around simple ideas. What a shame so many episodes are missing.
The Vital Spark cast at their very best, memorable for all the right reasons.
Wonderful to listen to. This is actually poetry.

And Angus Lennie being Steve McQueen's buddy in the Great Escape!
Praise God for such a cool memory🙏🌹😊
Thanks for posting these episodes i have watched them many times they bring back so many memories of my youth and always make me laugh
One of the best comedies of all time.
Groing up near bowling harbour i used to see the broken vital spark there every weekend
@Mark Morrissey no it was restored years ago

Very funny and no ads.

My favourite line is from mournful and frightened Dan when bent double: "I think I could learn to live like this".

Thanks for sharing, one of the best episodes ever.
Wonderful.
Nothing but brilliant 👏
This always makes me laugh...the boat Vital Spark used to be moored at in Irvine harbour I would see it whenever I took a walk to the point.
Hi Albert. The boat is now sitting at Inverary.
Auch ae the noo. Cannae I no gae tae the Clyde. Living abroad now, this sruff is at the centre of this Ayrshire lassies heart

Priceless
Absolute genius. 🤣😂🤣👍
Just fantastic,,,🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome.
Roddy McMillan was a very fine character actor. He played a real nasty piece of work in When The Boat Comes In.
Pure class
I love this program and very funny
Can't be beaten

There was a two minute portion that had just my home screen with sound. Hence the re-upload.
I have read most (I think) of the Parahandy stories, but why is "Hurricane Jack" never included in these wonderful tales?.

It's The Maggie. Though The Vital Spark is more loosely based on Neil Munro's Para Handy Tales than it is on the film

@@dereksmith4177 glad i could help!🙂 Aye, it's a good film, and one I've not watched in a while, I may just have to dig it out.
@@kennethmacgregor-GregorachI also picked up a copy of the book.
Big Dougie stayed in Govan
If Dougie was here he'd tell you
What was that whisky at the end?
in the stories Para Handy only calls Dan a stoker only once. in that case it because Dan was fast asleep
The Vital Spark is based loosely on Neil Munro's tales. A fantastic job they've done too. I'm sure Neil would approve. By chove...
the steam was building up while they was talking
There is also Duncan Macrae, Roddy McMillan, John Grieve and Alex Mackenzie. in ruclips.net/video/AZSak7hwUBE/видео.html
