I think what you gain with direct drive is not having gears. With belts and pulleys it is not an issue to begin with so I like 500. I see the turbine is coming along. All and all I would say it's nice to be you and that life is good.
Direct drive is very simplistic and illuminates a lot of moving parts. But the RAW 500 is a very simplistic design as well and gives you the option of different motor combinations. The Turbine is coming along! Trust me, my life is a lot harder than most think but I’m thankful to be able to do this!
Bailed on SAB and went to an M4. love it! I do have to say though SAB's are definitely a great product for most and their design is very unique. Thanks for sharing Jeff. Oh yeah, thanks for the awesome build videos of the M4😁
The M4 is definitely a very nice helicopter. Unfortunately I had a very bad experience with them and that helicopter but I know a lot of people like it. I may get a M4 Max to try! I’m glad the videos were helpful.
i used to be more interested in the raw 420 as a potential future build, the omp m4 max is probably more appealling to me now. i really like that raw 500 tho, if i was buying a sab that would be the one.
I can tell you from experience in owning almost every helicopter manufacturer on the market today and prior SAB really does make the nicest and best quality machines on the market.
Have you ever built and flown any clone helicopter ? I want to build a big scale heli but I don't want to do it with any of my heli's. Thinking about using a clone kit.. Of course I would run higher end electronics for the build.
I’ve built many many clone helis over the years. Depending on the company, some of them are better than others. Almost every clone helicopter requires a bunch of work to make it right. But Roban makes great scale kits! Check them out if you have not already.
Not long after I built my raw 420 they discontinued it😢. I heard it was because the dd motor was hard to produce. Sucks dropping all that money just to have it discontinued. I may sell the 420
No need to sell it! Parts will be around for a long long time. I can still buy parts for my original Goblin 700 that came out in 2013. A lot of the parts for the 420 comp are the exact same.
What size would you recommend for an intermediate flyer? I currently have an Align T Rex 450, and have been practicing with a goosky s2. I have 1.5 acres out my back door for space to fly in. My heart says 580 but I think a 420 or 500 might be a better stepping stone?
@@dp2826 between the 420 and 500 I would say get the 500. The RAW 420 is fantastic and I love mine but the 500 is bigger, and flys bigger but smaller then the 580. 1.5 acres is a good space you could fly a 700 but I think the RAW 500 would be perfect for you.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 Hello, I have also been thinking for a long time about where to go next. I fly the OMP M4 MAX, rather for comfort and for a short time. Is it advisable to switch to RAW 500 (it's beautiful) or rather RAW 580, 6S battery? Thanks for the advice.
Thx Jeff!! Does anyone have any complaints that the standard battery connector always draws sparks? I changed mine on my 420 to XT90 AS. The xt 60 were burned black. Or did I do something wrong? This doesn't seem to be a problem for anyone with 6s. That heavy sparking can't be good, can it?
You’re welcome! I hope the video was helpful. So sparking is from a poor connection. A lot of the XT connectors if they are not AMSS brand they are very loose in the plating on them is not great. So when you plug the connector in ended arcs that is from it being powered up initially. Which we know but if you take a knife and spread the male connector out slightly. It will make a much better connection and eliminate a lot of that sparking.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 I've never had a good experience with non DD helis, but love the goosky s1 and omp m2. I am interested in trying an SAB though. Would you recommend the RAW 420 Comp, or should I try the DD goosky rs4?
Your anti rotation bracket or how its called ist mounted the wrong way, i am building my raw 500 at the moment, an i first did this wrong too because in the manual it is not so clear on page 7... But on page 8 you can see the SAB logo facing outwards... Please correct me if i am wrong. But does it matter at all? Maybe not... I would go for the RAW 500 no doubt about it, 500 Heli size is best of all worlds in my opinion so to speak.... The Goblin 500 is a awesome machine....
No it’s not. Look at the direction of the curve. You want it go towards the head. If it’s the other way the Anti Rotation pin can pop out. I’ve talked with many people about it including SAB. The way in the video is the right way. It’s the same as the RAW 420, the RAW 500 is a fantastic heli. Perfect size and best daily flyer. Perfect power too!
Ok, i was not sure about that, the manual is not very specific in that matter. In the manual it looks times so times so. There is a video of the german release on the "Rotor" show in the beginning if 2023, in that video it is mounted with the small sab logo and the curve facing outwards so i thought this would be the right way. I got to check that. Hope i can loosen the screws again if mounted wrong, because they are glued in with retaining compound loctite. However i dont think it will make a difference anyway. I have the kraken 580 12S, the black thunder 650, the 420 sport and the old goblin 500 from wich i take the components for the raw. Awesome machine, cant wait to fly this baby... I am not sure about the quick connects for the batterie...what are your experiences with it?
I have the new RAW 420 Orange and Blue theme to install on my 420. Looks sooooooooo awesome!
It really does! Very visible and pops well in the air. I’m going to clearcoat my canopy. I think it will look even better.
I agree with you on the tail servo mount, Jeff. There really isn’t a whole lot to not like about each machine
SAB makes incredible helicopters and their quality is always top notch but that tail servo just drives me crazy lol
The 420 is amazing but the 500 is my favorite heli so far!
The 500 definitely flies Awesome.!

I have the M4 Max and the Raw 420. I actually prefer the M4 Max, but both are great.
I have been waiting for this comparison, thank you!

Have both love both.

It’s a hard choice! Thank you for watching!
How about both!?

I would like to ask which model of raw 420 swatch plate I used to compare. Is it not the original one?
This 420 is a 3 servo 120° when setting up my gyro
It should be a 130 degrees swash.

Don’t they make a no spark connector.

What was the cost difference between the 2? Are they 200 or 500 apart?
where can you buy the raw 420 DD? Does it come with a motor and blades directly from SAB?
@@GOAFPilotChannel unfortunately the SAB RAW 420 DD is no longer made and it was replaced with the RAW 420 Comp which is more like the 500.

500 all the way. I sold my 420
The 500 is great! I like them both but could definitely see my self flying the 500 more.
Wanna grow from my 420….. and I got a stash of 3300mah 6s… and I mean stash….
Do we think the same now? 😉
Can't afford either one 😢😢😢😢
They are expensive, but SAB is top of the line.
