“We can replace you.” Almost word for word what one manager told us in a meeting. I believe his exact words were, “I can hire anyone off the street to do your jobs.” Which, yeah, we’re not something that needed formal training like welding or being a doctor, but not the motivator he thought it was. The issue? One person was accidentally putting in something wrong. It didn’t effect anything but the system and was easily fixed. But nope. Our managers picked calling 20-30 people worthless instead

I used to work at Denny's, never missed a day. One day I was full on projectile vomiting and tried to call in. They said *I* needed to find my replacement, couldn't get anyone, made me come in. I didn't have a car so I took the bus (This was back in the early 00's and I even masked then when I was sick). I started at Midnight and last bus route was at 10:30, got there an hour early. Spent 45 minutes projectile vomiting in the parking lot since I was asked to go outside due to the noise I was making when I was throwing up in the bathroom. Had numerous people walk past me while I *WAS IN FULL UNIFORM* vomiting uncontrollably. Manager came out and said I could go home for the night, no need to a replacement. Now I had to spend money on a cab back. Assholes.

Last time I left work for more than 2 weeks, it was only a few days before my coworkers were sending me texts and emails with attached photos and videos asking me what they should do to handle the situation. A lot of things were kept in locked enclosures until I returned.
I should've asked for a raise or I'd extend my leave.
Also, if anyone under me comes in sick, I will pay them to go home. I don't want them breathing on everyone and having half the staff calling in sick the next week. Basic human empathy aside, it's a horrible idea to let your staff come in sick.

I can confidently say that the number of debates I have had regarding working from home for the staff, with some 68y/o crusty old miser who thinks that if your job isn’t killing you aren’t working hard enough, is ridiculous. No Alan! The staff are contracted to work 37.5 hours per week so unless the building is on fire or we get cyber attacked they only work 37.5 hours per week! And the reason we can’t attract workers is because our competitors allow remote working. “But I used to work 200 hours a week and it made me the man I am today!” Yeah a burnt out, psychotic, Hans Molemanesque creature, that feeds on misery and despair.

That company is now out of business because they fired a whole bunch of people. I quit before that because I started school again but damn... The demand for workers should be so high and the recruitment process should be so costly today that employers realistically couldn't afford to even try screwing over new recruits. The problem is that there are still too many gullible workers out there who will either take their employers' words for granted or just feel like they have no choice but to suffer corporate slavery even if they end up with a personal net loss every day. All coupled with a a fear or unwillingness to unionize.
Corporations should never have become the implied rule-makers of society. If they want the labor we can offer, *they* have to be the ones adhering to *our* conditions before they can demand anything from us. If they don't care to plan and budget around what their skilled and competent employees expect from them, then they don't get to have a business.
