Challengers Wins. Can Zendaya Open a Movie? It's a good question. The box office has been incredibly slow. Challengers wasn't challenged with any competition yet it came up with a $15M box office open. Global numbers aren't encouraging at $25M. The $55M budget is also an obstacle to contend with. Let's talk about it.

Hollywood is doomed and that's a good thing.
I just realized that the poster for this movie is a ripoff of Almost Famous.
You're absolutely correct. I hadn't made that connection, but now I can't un-see it...
Does the budget matter when the film being released in theatres is just promo for Prime when ithits streaming? Its the next Saltburn.
How much did the R rating impact the numbers? Timmy Chalamet was for children.

It really is. But it's fun.
When Hollywood is gone I bet they will blame the fans? I don’t even look to see what is on at the movies anymore, lots of good movies you can stream that are fun/entertaining.
Not to be harsh, but Zendaya isn't a draw for me. With a good script and director, I think she could be good... but it's unlikely Zendaya is ever going to be the deciding factor on whether or not I pay money to see a movie.
This "Challengers" thing... It just looks terrible... Like a script some Hollywood Zoomer thought was clever and edgy, and they just HAD to have Zendaya in it. The trailer was cringe-inducing. Hard pass.
None of that matters. She's a draw for millions of other people. She's starred in 2 number 1 movies this year in 3 months.
@@vminajj1267 No hate for Zendaya, but of those two number one movies, she's largely regarded as the worst part of "Dune 2" and "Challengers" seems unlikely to break even at the box office... so whatever kind of "draw" she is, it's not enough to turn the tide... so I'd suggest "none of that matters" applies more to your statements than mine.
I'm neither for nor against Zendaya. I have no axe to grind one way or the other. The truth appears to be, however, that Zendaya is overhyped and underperforms. "Challengers" had a $15 million domestic opening weekend plus $10 million foreign with around a $50 million budget. If it doesn't drop off dramatically, there's a minute chance it'll break even... but I wouldn't hold my breath.
First in line to jump off a cliff and hit rock bottom isn't where you want to be.
Movies like these are the reason why I stopped going to the theaters regularly. Only 3 movies I'm planning to see Deadpool, Despicable Me 4 with my kiddo, and War of the Rohirrim.
Family of 3 cost me $80-120 in so cal...not wasting my money on mediocre to bad movies.
Hollywood is just cringe, they ruined Tom Holland making him a gay promiscuous guy, now making the same mistake with Zendaya challenges, basically a tennis player that gets around… no thanks. Feels like the cheap adult movies that were a waste of money back on late night cable programs
@Culture Casino Zendaya ever since seeing her in Spider-Man move just seems like she has no interest in really being an actress and just so boring like she was pushed into the business looking for a way out because she hates it. That’s what comes across to me anyway.
MATCHPOINT is a Tennis movie starring Scarlett Johansson you might want to compare with this one. It is probably better than CHALLENGER

Zendaya hurts every movie she is in but the movies she is in generally are bulletproof. She hasn’t added a dollar to any box office anywhere

@@vminajj1267 she okay in Spider-Man, but not why I wanted to see it. But this movie isn’t my cup of tea. She’s basically just a tennis player that has her legs open to get wreaked by two guys. If i want to see that I’d watch adult films over a soft porno movie

Timothee Chalamet can be the lead in a movie and proved it in Dune and Wonka, but Zendaya can't; in a well assemble cast - like The Rock - she'll be Ok if she doesn't have too much screen time.
I saw Dune Part 2 and she didn't - not one bit - help the movie, quite the contrary in my book.😖
Zendaya is the face of dune 2 alongside timothee and timothee has never been in a successful movie before dune franchise with zendaya. Zendaya has been in blockbuster films she's she was like 19😂😂 I know it hurts you that she is successful in the end

It's looking pretty certain that the film will end up losing money. Theaters get half the revenue so the film has to make 2X it's budget plus it has to make back all the advertising money which is probably $25M - $50M .I'm not sure how much revenue is made off streaming services though. I'm not blaming Zendaya on this but just looking at the numbers it appears this is not going to be a successful film.
